If you listen to Ambient to any extent, you might be aware of the Music From Memory label. They have been turning out excellent product since their inception. To celebrate their 50th release, they began the Virtual Dreams series of compilations with Virtual Dreams: Ambient Explorations In The House & Techno Age, 1993-1997.

This is the perfect entrance to their releases. The selections, the mastering, & the presentation are all on-point.

Virtual Dreams delves into music produced during the 1990s that redefined the boundaries of 'Ambient'. This is music created mainly by House & Techno producers, created for clubbers, but for a world beyond dance floors. House & Techno exposed millions of late 80s young people to the life-changing ups of a new world. However, with the ups of course came the downs. This ushered in the concept of a 'Chill-out' room. Early Chill-out rooms were usually sound-tracked by music such as reggae & soul. Then creative young Techno & House producers began developing a futuristic 'Ambient' sound for a world beyond the thud of the main room.

Unlike Brian Eno's Music for Airports, for example, Ambient in this new age had much sharper teeth. The soundscapes steered away from the pastoral & often portrayed outer-space & technology as opening up transformative new dimensions, exploring psychedelic, mind-altering, & transcendental possibilities of music. These were the Virtual Dreams of a new world.
