A Pair of Docs Walk into a Bar...

The Grandfather Paradox: An Imprudent Journey Through 50 Years of Minimalistic Music explores the history of minimalist music in mix CD format.

Although taking the name from the Rene Barjavel's proposed paradox which refutes the possibility of time travel: positing that a time traveler could theoretically go back in time, kill hir grandfather & therefore negate hir own existence, this paradox doesn’t seem to have hampered the Innervisions quartet of Dixon, Âme (Kristian Beyer & Frank Wiedemann), & Henrik Schwarz from attempting their own feat of time-juggling.

What results is a truly time-defying melting pot, where Steve Reich's gradual processes joins Robert Hood's groundbreaking "Minus", Richie Hawtin's mix of La Funk Mob's "Motor Bass Gets Phunked Up", "Bass-Line Generator" by legendary electronic composer Raymond Scott, post-punk from Liquid Liquid, classic Krautrock of Can to the skwonk jazz of Moondog (there's even one specially for yours truly - Ø's "Atomit").

For your aural edification there are both mixed & unmixed discs.

You Don't Have to Be a Genius to Be Horny!

I’ve featured many bands from Iowa here at NSS. For some reason, to me the Iowa sound is a most refreshing middle-America noise. I like a lot of middle-America noise, be it the true Noize of Chicago, the rawk of Cleveland, or unique regional tastes from Milwaukee, or Kentucky or Nebraska…all these areas have their scenes & styles, but there’s always somethin' about Iowa.

Horny Genius was a seminal indie band from Iowa City, Iowa. Their rock style is just anarchic & frenetic enough: ringing guitar notes & off-kilter melody lines all supported by a tight rhythm section with an almost pop feel. The thematic content of their tunes veer between ethereal & everyman, between literary & lowbrow.

Version 1.0 started in 1983 in Monticello, Iowa as The Mental Midgets. They moved to Iowa City  & performed as Version 2.0 – That Matters & Version 3.0 – The Repomen. Their first official gig as Horny Genius was at the University of Iowa Student Union in October 1985. That same year they released their first cassette, Dogs Under the Car.

This is their 1989 release Burn Your Sister, recorded at Smart Studios in Madison,WI with Butch Vig (Community 3 Records).

On Burn Your Sister, Horny Genius are: John McNeill – guitar, bass, & vocals; Mike Turnis – guitar, bass, & vocals; Scott Siegling – guitar; & Scott McWilliams – drums & percussion.

Beware the Ton-Ton Macoute!

Born in Still Creek, Georgia & raised in the Macon area, Johnny Jenkins was a hard-driving, left-handed guitarist with a bellowing voice. By the time Ton-Ton Macoute! was released, Jenkins had already been instrumental in bringing Otis Redding from obscurity to stardom, playing with the young Otis in the blues group, The Pinetoppers. Jenkins was also on the radar of fellow left-handed guitarist Jimi Hendrix as a model for onstage histrionics.

Jenkins' raw, firebrand vocals & guitar-picking gave his solo debut a wallop that might've made him a star if only slide guitarist Duane Allman & several other members of his backing band hadn't left to form the Allman Brothers. Jenkins was a star in the making but he had no real desire to be in the spotlight. He preferred to remain a regional fixture & work the local circuit in lieu of chasing international acclaim.
Jenkins passed away in 2006, a popular & well-loved legend in his Macon hometown. Ton-Ton Macoute! is the jewel in his crown.

On Ton-Ton Macoute! the musicians are: Johnny Jenkins – vocals, guitar, & harmonica; Duane Allman & Pete Carr – lead & slide guitar; Paul Hornsby – lead guitar, slide guitar, piano, & organ; Berry Oakley- bass; Robert Powell – bass & timbales; Eddie Hinton, Johnny Wyker, & Tippy Armstrong – congas & assorted percussion; Jai Johnny Johanson – timbales; & Butch Trucks & Johnny Sandlin – drums. Backing vocals on “I Walk on Guilded Splinters” – Southern Comfort & vocal accompaniment on “Blind Bats & Swamp Rats” – Ella Brown.

Posted here for your aural pleasures is a re-mastered version of Sleep Chamber – Satanic Sanction originally released by Musica Maxima Magnetica ‎(eee 02) in Italy in 1988. The original release featured a different track order:

Prescription
Presence Ov Thee Magus
Presence (reprise)
Entre Nous
Ov This Flesh
Poison
Consequence or Commitment

Here additional tracks have been added to augment the overall experience. It was re-mastered by John Zewizz & he added other Sleep Chamber material from the original masters that was intended for the original release but never included. This CD is from a promo-only edition of 75 purchased from John Zewizz himself. I got hooked up with this through the dearly missed Thee Brad Miller.

Let’s Be Frank Here

Just got done watching acclaimed Irish director Lenny Abrahamson’s 2014 film, Frank. So some folks are still making outré movies oddball enough even for me. Just had to post up the soundtrack. A few notes of interest: all of the music performed by the band Soronprfbs in the film was played live by the cast while filming; the band's communal recording session at the cabin in Vetno is based on events surrounding the iconic recording of the album Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band; & outsider musician Daniel Johnston was one of the influences on the film.

Frank:
Saddle up
Secure the galactic perimeters
Weak & strong, nuclear bombs
Now what's together
Will soon come apart
When it's all over
No back to the start.
