Now Wakes the Sea

Back in prehistoric times (it seems), when I was doing my musickal journey around this marble, I sailed at one point into the Enewetak Atoll. It is the second-westernmost atoll of the Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands. I spoke of JG Ballard & The Terminal Beach on Eniwetok (referred to as "Eniwetok" until 1974, when the U.S. changed its official spelling to "Enewetak" along with many other Marshall Islands place names to more properly reflect their pronunciation by the Marshall Islanders). Between 1977 & 1980, a concrete dome was built on Runit Island to deposit radioactive soil & debris.

Now I present for your aural edification the soundtrack to the JG Ballard short story.

The release includes an 18 page A5 PDF booklet with detailed notes & photographs by Paul Wady (included here).

Scotch Dub from Spider Man

Today "Cobra Rock" by The Revolutionaries grabbed my ears & made me realize I needed to post up some Lloyd 'Spider Man' Campbell Dub. Though not a true godhead, he is nonetheless a super Hero.

Lloyd moved from JA to England in the early 60s where he worked with Rico Rodriguez, Joe Mansano & the Rudies, Winston Groovy, & others. In 1972 he returned to Jamaica & began putting out a continuous string of reggae & dub hits. By 1975  he was working with a group of musicians that came to form the core of the group Skin Flesh & Bones

Skin Flesh & Bones was formed by bass player Lloyd Parks. The band featured many of the players who would go on to form The Revolutionaries.

The band was: Lloyd Parks – bass; with Sly Dunbar - drums before he started working with Robbie Shakespeare; Radcliffe 'Dougie' Bryan – guitar; & Ansel Collins - keyboards. Producer Lloyd Campbell worked primarily out of Randy's & North Parade at this time. Fighting Dub was released on the Love label, an English subsidiary of Jama Records.

How Do I Decide?

Sometimes it goes kinda like this…

Yesterday I fell into a genre rabbit hole & for a while I was flashing on that one falling nightmare where I’m floundering arms & legs, posterior toward the…¿bottom?, accelerating at ever increasing speeds beyond maximum velocity (it is a dream).

I was contemplating (well, I had just smoked a fattie & my friend asked about) the depth of 21st Century Dub. I started investigating the French & Italian mid-aughts Dub scene, soon I was listening to electrodub & psydub & dubstep. From there I got sucked into some Burning Man civil war between junglists & the psytrance crowd. Next was all out bloodshed over the difference between dubstep (junglist candidate) & psydub (ditto…psytrancers). Now the most edge artists walk the fine line between the two.

Neither are really Dub, in my opinion. But during this crazy trip, I discovered Panda Dub. The Panda Dub project began in 2007 in Lyon, France. Though inspired by the French & UK dub scene, Panda Dub created his own style as a dub maker by combining reggae roots, UK stepper, & French electro dub into his music.

Panda Dub’s first release was Born 2 Dub in 2007. You can get more from ODGProd.  (check out Archives, it’s simply…Dub).

What the FLAC?

After replying to a commenter about the whole FLAC versus MP3 thing, I thought…
I'd rip this bad boy to FLAC & give it a go. I love vinyl, but in the here & now, we're all out in interweb cyberspace. Face it, spudboys & tomatoes. This is ALL digital, so we're squabbling over ones & zeros here.

My take is, depending on myriad factors: from computer or mobile device to speakers, headphones, earbuds; geographical location to personal preference; from software to hardware to wetware, it’s all relative to the individual. To the majority who are just happy to be able to listen to perchance some unique musick, 320Kbps 44,100 to 48,000 is fine.

Definitely lossless is ideal...if it is recorded & handled properly from the analog to the digital (I live for the depth of the Analog Sound), but is it worth…the difference to me in storage between 227MB FLAC or 96MB MP3 is crucial if the majority are fine with 320 MP3.

That being said, here's my first & perhaps only (those blue-finned fish are driving me crazy) venture into FLACland. Ripped from a nearly 40yr old slab of vinyl to 16bit 48,000 FLAC. It does sound great, but I can just listen to the record.

Here's a concept, kiddies. I do this because this is what I want to do.

Dedicated to Masami Shinoda & Farley Fly

Usta do a ‘zine called EAT POOP! with a buncha fuckin’ punks in San JoHaze, Cali. Our mascot was the master POOP sniffer Farley the Fly. At some point Farley was M.I.A. & we feared the worst, but for years readers would send us pictures, possible Farley sightings, you know.

The other day I was looking through the vinyl & CDs at one of the more aromatic thrift stores that dot the area when I came across King Fly hisself, looking bad-ass & healthier than ever. Then I realized that he had ascended to the Motherhead & was living the high life in Zambodia. Way Kool!

Dub grew out of reggae music in the 60s. It is usually considered a subgenre of reggae, but not by this Dub fanatic. Dub is reggae stripped to its essentials, usually by removing most of the vocals & pumping up the drum & bass 'riddim' tracks. Musick should be essential…so for me, I have always preferred Dub.

That being said, I have been thinking for quite some time about Dub & the Lion King of Reggae, Bob Marley. Many of the various Wailers have been presented here in all their Dubness & it has been good. But Bob & the Ws are so iconic to reggae that I have been apprehensive.

Here’s what I’ve come up with…

First is an offering from NSS fave Bill Laswell remixing Bob Marley & the Wailers for your pleasure.

Bob Marley ‎– Dreams of Freedom (Ambient Translations of Bob Marley in Dub),
Axiom 314-524 419-2, 1997.

Midnight Ravers

Next is a questionable entry, Bob Marley – The Secret Blackwell Dubs. Apparently it came straight out of the Island vaults some time around the turn of the century. To the best of my knowledge it is not commercially available. These are believed to be true Marley dubs (all of the tracks contain snippets of his lead vocal plus the Wailers & the I Threes background vocals). However, some are dubs to remixes of the 'official' releases, most notably "She's Gone" & "Exodus". Some of these may have been released on Island 7"ers as the b-side of the more well-known vocal versions (1972s "Rock it Babe" b/w "Rock it Version"??? for example).

Forever Loving Jah
Waiting in Vain
Roots Rock Dub
Jamming
Exodus (remix)
Is This Dub?
Rock it Babe
Crazy Baldhead
She's Gone

One Love
Keep on Moving

Next, directly from the horse’s mouth, so to neigh, is the Island/Tuff Gong official In Dub, Vol, 1. The versions vary widely in style & with virtually no production information or mixing credits, it is hard to place when they may have been recorded. The digital delay flutter of "One Love/People Get Ready Dub" or "Three Little Birds Dub" suggests post-80s studio trickery while "Waiting in Vain Dub" has a more subdued grit of classic 70s dub style. Although there's nothing as raw, saturated, or genius as the pioneering 70s productions of King Tubby or Lee Perry, dub champion Scientist contributes a new mix of "Lively Up Yourself" (known here as "Lively Up Your Dub"), heavy with stereo-panned delay, triggered drums, & fragmented horns.

Bob Marley & the Wailers – In Dub, Vol. 1, Island Records B0015161-02, 2012.

Tracklist –
Roots, Rock Dub
Is This Love Dub
Forever Loving Jah Dub
Lively up Your Dub
Three Little Birds Dub
Crazy Baldhead Dub
Waiting in Vain Dub

One Love / People Get Ready Dub
She’s Gone Dub
Smile Jamaica Version

But I’m just not completely satisfied with the Nesta Dub so far. Decide for one last mega-dose of Marley Dub, I’d go back to the earlier days of B&tWs. The singles that Bob Marley & the Wailers cut for Lee 'Scratch' Perry's Upsetter label in the late 60s & early 70s are among some of the most historically significant in reggae. On The Complete Upsetters box set is some true Dub from one of the Triumvirate working with the soon-to-be King of Reggae. I tried to gather together all the Dub Versions that L'S'P & the Upsetters did with Robert Nesta Marley & the other boys & girls. It ended up being a lot, so I’ve made Volumes Here & Now.

June 6, 2002 - Dee Dee passes away just days before he was meant to be recording a live album with Marky Ramone.

June 9, 2002 - Marky Ramone & his latest band the Speedkings go into the studio to record a tribute.

"I've Got Dee Dee on My Mind" is an upbeat celebration complete with samples of Dee Dee counting in "1 2 3 4" with backing vocals from Fifi of the Japanese band Fifi & The Mach III.

On the flipside Marky shares the vocals with Nick Speedking for "Chinese Rocks" co-written by Dee Dee & Marky's old bandleader Richard Hell, originally made (in)famous by their binge buddies The Heartbreakers.

I Get so Agrovated

I don't know if anyone really gives a flying fuck about stuff like this, but I guess it’s just one of my pet peeves??? All over the interweb & even on discogs (where they have the cover artwork – see mine below), Kaya Dub is listed as The Aggrovators. Just read the bleeping cover, brutha. A-G-R-O-V-A-T-O-R-S. The Agrovators or Aggrovators (both spellings are correct & album specific – they are not misprints) had a storied career at Third World under both nom.

Kaya Dub is The Agrovators: Bunny Lee producin' & arrangin'; Prince Jammy mixin' & engineerin'; Earl 'Chinna' Smith on lead guitar; both Carl Harvey & Jeffrey Chung on rhythm guitars; Keith Sterling piano; Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare doing their usual drums & bass.

Irrespective of any peevishness on my part, this is a fantastic treasure. Just look at its provenance.
