The second offering from the great Cup of Tea Records.
Spaceways was a seven-piece outfit complete with horn section, the group formed in 1989 at the height of the UK acid jazz craze. Their roots in acid jazz influenced Trip-hop are evident in their first full-length debut, Trad.
Spaceways played a groove-based, live-sounding integration of funky, sequenced beats, live percussion with lots of brass, guitars, stand-up bass, & other instrumental affects not normally associated with electronic dance music, Spaceways were part of a new crop of artists re-exploring dance music's roots through live performance.

Acid jazz was one of those genres which passed almost completely beneath my radar, back in the day, so i know next-to-nothing about it. It's the name - i was expecting more from a collision involving jazz and acid. But, as ever searching for ways to drain the swamp of my ignorance, now would be a good chance to park my prejudice and listen properly for once. Cheers, mate.
ReplyDeleteGenres, label, pigeon-holes. Hate 'em but use 'em, trying for a little clarity, usually just muddying the waters. It's Cup of Tea Records...they're eclectic, ya just have ta give 'em a listen & decide.
