Musick the Needed Work - S: Spring Heel Jack

The musical duo of John Coxon & Ashley Wales formed Spring Heel Jack in 1993 in London, England. They began their career exploring drum 'n' bass & jungle, but have since branched out into free improvisation & jazz.

By the time the duo released Disappeared, they had stepped up their game from drum 'n' bass / jungle dance music, adding a new level of improvisation along with sparsely inventive organ / keyboard / synthesizer melody & processed saxophone, trumpet, & clarinet. Later on, Spring Heel Jack would abandon drum 'n' bass entirely for an improv jazz style, but on Disappeared they have the perfect blend & balance of the old & new to make this extremely listenable.

  2. Great choice of an album here. I love the transitional phase of their music, and this was where they showed all their skills and styles (past and future) in a great melting pot. This, Treader, The Sound of Music EP, the collab with Low and their Oddities compilation are all just wonderful examples of an established artist experimenting and moving towards something completely new, and it works! Thanks for the share.
