Unplanned share, this came up when I shared Spring Heel Jack.
Mooz mentioned Valentina Magaletti.
Then I mentioned Holy Tongue.
Then FlaccusMUC mentioned he’d like some Holy Tongue (& he doesn't even listen to Dub).
Then Mooz shared a link for Holy Tongue - Deliverance & Spiritual Warfare.
Now I'm going to share these before I set off on the rest of the Overflow folder.
Holy Tongue began as a studio collaboration between percussionist Valentina Magaletti & producer Al Wootton. With three critically acclaimed EPs behind them they then transitioned into a live trio with the addition of Susumu Mukai on bass. Their high energy live sets invoke the experimental Dub of On-U-Sound, the frenetic rhythms of 23 Skidoo, Liquid Liquid, & ESG. Psychedelic, free-form, high energy, spiritual Dub-dance music.
Holy Tongue conjure ecstatic, body-moving ritual through psychedelic Dub, Magaletti's raw percussion, & over-all post-punk spirit. The trio light up the stage with hypnotic, high-energy improvisation melding cosmic jazz freedom with cavernous low-end bass, presenting a kinetic, genre-dissolving live show that channels pure momentum.
Holy Tongue's live performances are known for their mesmerizing intensity, often highlighting their spontaniety & reflecting their deep roots in experimental sound. Their ability to mix varying influences makes these live shows truly immersive, distinctive experiences.
Here are the first three EPs from the duo...

Thanks very much indeed, NØ. Once again, a lesson to me in just how little i know about how much there is out there. I love it.
ReplyDeleteGlad you tried these. Thought you would like them. Thanks, brother.
DeleteI love Holy Tongue. Incidentally the Valentina Magaletti album 'Kansai Bruises' is pretty fine too. Lots of polyrhythmic mindfuck to entertain the masses with. .
ReplyDeleteKansai Bruises is really good. I share a link to it in the Spring Heel Jack - Treader comments.
DeleteIt's true I'm not really a dub person. But I like what I've heard from Holy Tongue. Might be because of Valentina Magaletti's percussion, or else because of what you call an overall post-punk spirit. Anyway, it's great! Thanks a lot, Nate!
ReplyDeleteSaid in jest, my friend. Know you're open to a lot of things & thought you might like these. Not Dub per se, just Dub adjacent (see more February).
DeleteSounds promising - more to look forward to!
DeleteGreat idea, and thanks for sharing these. Lately I've been very enamored with all of Valentina's projects. Having found her through Vanishing Twin, then Holy Tongue, it was her solo work and participation with UUUU that really got me on a roll. Moin/Raime, Tomaga, The Oscillation, Cate Le Bon, she seems to be popping up everywhere on excellent albums. I appreciate you taking the side step to share this post.
ReplyDeleteThe idea was all your doing, my friend. Hope the Tolouse Low Trax & Kneidler links over in the SHJ comments met with your approval. More Holy Tongue coming in a while.
DeleteThe few couple songs of Holy Tongue that I've heard remind me of Explode Into Colors. Anybody heard of them? West Coast bari guitar/drums/keys+fx+perc trio from the mid to late oughts with lots of echo and dance-y vibes that I always dug and wished I could have seen live.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment, abns.
ReplyDeleteExplode into Color was an all female trio from Portland, Oregon associated with Kill Rock Stars. Claudia Meza - guitar, other, Lisa Schonberg - drums, & Heather Treadway - drums (took two to do whar Valentina does, she's simply awesome). Active in the late 00s/early 10s. The band formally split up on July 5th, 2010. They reunited for a show in 2016 at Mississippi Studios in Portland. Lisa & Heather did a couple drum project since but haven't really heard much from the three since. Definitely sound like a group to experience in a live setting.
Here's one they recorded back in the day...
Explode into Colors - Quilts, M’Lady Records MLADYS1, 2010.
