Still working my way through the alphabet, emptying out the Musick that Needs Work folder. Somehow three in a row have had the most needing work. R was RIDICULOUS, S even more in-SANITY, & now T. I think T stands for TERROR. Even having removed a shit ton of bands with The (The Clash, The Dammed, The Legendary Pink Dots, The Slits, etc...nothing I could do with ones like The Tape Beatles, The Tropicals, worst conundrum The The), I still won't be finished this month. I even paired it down a bit as I had some releases that where in the T section that were mis-filed (the title started with T not the group) & some that I didn't really care about (starting therefore with S for SHIT) & just deleted. Still, this is going to be a lot of work, so best just begin...
Starting off with a pair by Tobin Sprout. Last January Frenz of NSS Richie Muster requested some Tobin Sprout. I shared a few that I had on hand but told him at the time that I had a few more that were resting in the MtNW: T folder. I'll start with those.
Tobin Sprout is a native of Dayton, Ohio. He became second songwriter & guitarist of the famed Dayton band Guided by Voices from 1987 to 1997 (again from 2010 to 2014). A self-taught musician, he employing a four-track recorder at his home studio which contributed greatly to the lo-fi sound of GbV. He had a busy solo career as well.

Not only surprised, but also revieved ...
ReplyDeleteNot to worry. No one will ever learn my guilty pleasures.
DeleteWhat a treat! I love his ramshackle approach to music-making. It sounds organic, quite natural in approach. Definitely not chartbound, which makes it all the more inviting to me. Lovely stuff, thank you Nate.
ReplyDeleteThis one was for you.
Deletedamn, i came for ABBA...;)

ReplyDeleteWe'll never forget Carnival Boy. He started it all.
DeleteIs it possible for you to find Amos Moses - Size 1994?
DeleteAnother self-released that I don't have. Sorry.
DeleteAh, GbV, They became my favorite band in the world in the ‘90s. For a time I wrote reviews for a music mag called Option. They’d send me five or so items for free and I’d send in the reviews. I pretty sweet deal, new music for free and you get to write what you think. One of those album was Guided by Voices’ third album Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia. Stuff that made an impression ended up on mix tapes I’d work up, sort of a ‘best of’ from Option. Several Gbv tracks made the grade and over time became favorites. Years later I was reading a review critical of the then just released Bee Thousand. I remember thinking ‘hey, I really liked what I heard’, so I was off to GbV Land and a serious obsession lasted well into the ‘00s. I made scores of mix tapes, giving each one it’s own cryptic Pollard-flavored titles. I’m too lazy to try dig them out and digitalize them, but I have recreated one of my favorites made up of tracks from Bob and Tobin’s first sole releases; Not In My Air Force [Bob} and Carnival Boy [Tobin]. Bam, a new Guided by Voices album! I hope some reading this will enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteNot in My Air Force Carnival Boy!
(Sounds like something some general needs to say to the clown current in the White House, what’s left of it anyway. Words can’t fully express the anger, shame and despair the orange plague evokes. Time for a Big Beautiful Blue Wave, tho’ I have doubts how well the opposition will ride it]

For the last twenty years, they’ve fallen into something of a rut for me. I like the music. Bob’s still the most prolific song writer alive, perhaps ever. They twenty thousand releases have all been good, but there’s a sameness, the next album not so different from the last one. Perhaps it the absence of two song writers. It felt like Tobin was George Harrison to Bob’s Lennon/McCartney. Their first fifteen years were the golden period, for me anyway, but I’m glad they’re still active. They are still a great band.
Thanks also for the Bee Gees’ 1st. Pretty fantastic as well.
No ABBA? No problem!
