Tuvalu

Re-uploaded by request 5/07/2014.

Te Vaka is a group of eleven musicians & dancers from Tuvalu, Tokelau, Samoa, Cook Islands, & New Zealand brought together under the inspired leadership of award winning songwriter, Opetaia Foa'i. The inspiration for his music comes from his multi-cultural upbringing, half Tuvaluan & half Tokelauan.

Tuvalu was formerly known as the Ellice Islands. It is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii & Australia. It comprises three reef islands & six true atolls. Its population of 11,200 makes it the third-least populous sovereign state in the world, with only Vatican City & Nauru having fewer inhabitants. In terms of physical land size, at just 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi) Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world after Vatican City, Monaco, & its nearby neighbor Nauru.

Tokelau is a territory of New Zealand in the South Pacific Ocean that consists of three tropical coral atolls: Atafu; Nukunonu; & Fakaofo with a combined land area of 10 km2 (4 sq mi) & a population of approximately 1,400. Its capital rotates yearly between the three atolls. Tokelau lies east of Tuvalu.

Te Vaka's music is grounded in the rhythms of the Pacific with the use of the pate (both single & double log drums) & pa'u (the indigenous goat skin conga & bass drums), but acoustic, electric, & bass guitars are integral to their music as well, particularly Foa'i's rhythmic acoustic guitar playing. Most of their songs are written in the Tuvaluan or Tokelauan language, with some also written in Samoan.

Original Contemporary Pacific Music is the debut recording for the Polynesian band Te Vaka.
