T-Rex began as a British folk-rock combo called Tyrannosaurus Rex fronted by guitarist/vocalist Marc Bolan. They became glam rock pioneers & shortened their name to T. Rex in 1970. This was recorded just as they were transitioning from folk to glam. Here is Marc Bolan - vocals, guitar, organ & Mickey Finn - bass, drums. This was T-Rex’s first #1 single.

Ofo & the Black Company were one of countless student bands playing in Lagos during the 70's. Brought to the attention of the Western world by David Bennett, Decca's A&R man in Nigeria. On the strength of their tune "Allah Wakbarr"’s appeal in the UK, they were invited to play in Berlin. From there they traveled to the UK where they stayed until returning to Lagos in 1975.

OriOr is Jeff Sharp (with occasional help from Phil Hollins), a post-punk/ambient artist who utilizes analog drum machines, monosynths, an early FM synthisizer, saxophone, tape delays, piano, & guitar to create his superb soundscapes. One of the koolest things about Sharp's work is that it predates yet has striking similarities to artists such as Coil, Angelo Badalamenti, & the earl 90s dark ambient bands.

Give this one a good listen. Is it the right speed? What kinda drugs were these guys on? This single made Flipper sound like Uriah Heep. Oh yeah, this was Honolulu, Hawaii in 1980. Tesco Vee once said in Touch & Go 'zine that the Fuckin' Flyin' A-Heads are one of the weirdest bands he'd ever heard in his life so that oughta give you a hint.
Recorded live in concert at Leeward Theatre, Pearl City, Honololo, HI. USA on Jan, 25, 1980.
In the words of drummer Dan Garret:
"It was a very small audience. Sep (Eric 'Sep' Ishii, vocalist) was mock terrorizing them with a large hunting knife a la The Brown Buffalo in Fear in Loathing in Las Vegas. People cleared out except for our friends who were rolling on the floor laughing. It was a great little live show; let's put it that way. It was in a small community college just above Pearl Harbor. After that show, we moved to San Francisco to play music. We did live shows at this club in San Francisco called the Sound of Music.
The thing that killed us in San Francisco was Sep made a poster for an upcoming show we were doing that was an anal shot from a porno. He posted it all over the (Catholic) Mission District on every telephone poll. The cops didn't like that and they went around to all the club owners and said "Don't book these guys." Without any venues to play in, that was the end of the band. That was about December of 1980.
I was in a band called Murder with Bob Clic from the Lewd and Nyna Crawford from VKTMS. We did a single on a label called Broken Rekids. I was also in a band called the Uptights that was more of a hardcore band and then I was in the Ronsons with Kurt Vanderhoof from Metal Church."

Pope Paul Pot? Political sarcasm or stoner weirdness. The Pope is from California, so you figure it out. In 1980 "Plastic TV Land on Acid" was submitted to KALX. Song was submitted by KALX submitted the song to Radio Free Europe. It was featured on Radio Free Europe's Tops in Pops show during marshal law in Poland.
The 1981 Adventures in Plastic T.V. Land 7" was released the following year, featuring the original track, a dub version titled "Acid TV Land on Plastic" (included on a compilation called Video Games of the Twelfth Century), a noisy number titled "This is Your Leader" & the touching ballad "KKK Carolina on my Mind".
Later that year Pope Paul Pot performed two shows: one at the Mabuhay Gardens, opening for the VKTMS; & one at the Sound of Music in SF, on Nov 11, 1981, opening for the Misfits. For the Mabuhay show, Paul Pot performed with a cassette tape of pre-recorded music. The line up for the Misfits show was Pope Paul Pot - vocals, Kevin Connelly - guitar, Andy Death - guitar, Tombo Defenstra - bass, & Clayton Call -drums.
By 1986, Paul was singing with Gail & the Fudgepackers. Later that same year the Gail & company packed it in. Paul & Gail 'Fudgepacker' Todd (bass) continued to work together as Jack 'n' Jill. 1989 saw the immergence of Don’t Mind Us with Paul as singer & lyricist. They played a bunch of parties, mostly driving everybody out of the rooms. Broke up.
For the next few years, Paul worked on The Great Lost Paul Pot Album, a 10 song opus that included a cover of Wild Man Fisher’s "Jennifer Jones". Marc Time of the Fudgepackers played drums & mixed the tapes. Paul Pot played all the other instruments.
1995 -97, Paul was guitarist for Poor Impulse Control. Based out of Berkeley, Poor Impulse Control played a blistering attack punktuated with lead bass, pounding drums & crunching guitar sprinkled with dashes of chaos. Drawing on their influences of Iggy & the Stooges, Flipper, partaking of the wine of the wrath of Babylon's fornication, they inspired awe from & pity for their listeners. Though prone to lapses of concentration, they maintained a solemn oath to meet each other at the end of each song. They performed numerous times at Gilman Street & other clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area as they slowly disintegrated.
Since then he has been guitarist for the Happy Clams, once again teaming up with Gail Todd. The Happy Clams are a collection of "hasn't beens" from Mudville, California They are on the forefront of San Francisco's Eastbay Un-Pop Movement. The Clams will remain standard bearers of the movement as long as their music remains unpopular. As they are still beneath the notice of critics, it's likely that they will continue to fly the Un-Pop banner for many years.

Dementia Precox was an experimental industrial noise band from Dayton, Ohio. They were formed on January 12, 1980 by Beavercreek High School friends Gyn Cameron (Gregory Stover) & Rodger Revlon (David Mench).
In September 1980 Gyn & Rodger released their first industrial release, a cassette in a ziplock baggie with a xeroxed paper insert; Dementia Precox: The Not so Hidden Persuaders.
Soon after, the duo recruited two more members, Max Noise (Timothy Nye) & Troy Boyahue (Chris Green) of the local band, The Occupants (which was Rodger’s previous band). By May 1981 Rodger Revlon left the band & was replaced by David Paul.

Wah! et al. 16 or more singles which varied stylistically from single to single & group to group but all are loud & heartfelt excursions into musickal mayhem.

Here's some heavy sounds from a really heavy band.
Tom A Doyle formed the band in 1988 when he was living in Seattle. During the early 90s Seattle music scene, Tad's sound was more like the Melvins than the more prevalent Seattle grunge bands. They were one of the heaviest bands in town at that time. The band was harassed continually with lawsuits over album covers such as 8-Way Santa & releases like the "Jack Pepsi" single. They had trouble with the Inhaler promotional material featuring President Clinton smoking a joint with the caption “This is some heavy shit!”. Heavy!

The Third Bardo was an American psychedelic/garage rock band from New York City. Their name is taken from the The Tibetan Book of the Dead.
The group existed for a brief time in the late 1960s. In 1967 they released their only single, "I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time", a song co-written by Rusty Evans, a folk singer & leader of the psychedelic proto-punk band The Deep along with Vicky Pike. "I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time" received some radio exposure until it was pulled for its perceived drug references. Years later it was recognized as a 1960s garage rock classic & included on Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968 box set.
Though short-lived, the band performed at local Manhattan venues including Arthur's Tavern & Ondine. They also appeared on the Cleveland-based television show Upbeat.
The Third Bardo only had one recording session in 1967, which yielded six tracks. Their technique of Eastern melody & distorted guitar was unique at the time.The band broke up soon after recording.

Apoptygma Berzerk are a futurepop band founded in 1989 by Stephan Groth & Jon Erik Martinsen from Sarpsborg, Norway.
Apop has gone through numerous personnel changes over the years. Groth is the only permanent member. Martinsen left the group early on. Anders Odden has been the most recurring member of Apop, joining in the live lineup in the early 1990s, reappearing several times during the next 15 years, both live & in the studio. Geir Bratland also joined in the first part of the 1990s. In 1999, Fredrik Darum & Ted Skogman joined the band for the Welcome To Earth album & world tour. In 2001, Fredrik & Ted were replaced with Fredrik Brarud & Angel.
Groth is teamed with Geir Bratland, Angel, & Fredrik Brarud on 2009s Rocket Science. The Apollo (Live on YourTV) is taken from that release.

Intitute's style is influenced by early 70s anarcho crossover bands like Crisis or Warsaw.
Moses Brown explains:
"The whole theme of Institute is really influenced by Dada stuff. I am into abstracting Dada. Stupid shit. Dada was already about the absurd, so I've just been making it even more absurd by cutting images up & scrambling them around. I wanna steal ideas & take them to a next level. Guitarist & multi-instrumentalist Richard H. Kirk was a founding member of Cabaret Voltaire.
The blind leading the blind leading the blind. Chris Watson, another original CV, left in 1981 & the third co-founder, Stephen Mallinder relocated to Perth, Australia.
Are we Having fun?
In 2014, Richard H. Kirk resurrected the Cabaret Voltaire moniker for a solo performance at the Atonal Festival in Berlin, playing brand-new material. Since then he has done numerous shows & has returned to full activity as Cabaret Voltaire with the release of the Shadow of Fear album in November 2020.
Kirk has also had an extensive solo career since 1980. "Never Lose Your Shadow" was recorded in 1982. "Public Fun" was recorded in 1987. Both tracks are from Earlier / Later (Unreleased Projects Anthology 74-89). "L.D. 60" & "Magic Words Command" where recorded in 1978 & appeared on Disposable Half-Truths, Kirk's first solo release.
Limited to 999 hand-numbered copies with 499 pressed on black vinyl including postcard with photo of Western Works studio in Sheffield, demolished in the late 80s.

ReplyDeleteWow, just wow... I have the MX-80 single and a couple of the others here, but if I saw this collection in a record store I would probably buy them all and go broke! I didn't DL everything today, but I got a feeling that I'll be back for another hit off this rare shit.
