Party Like it's 1972

The Edsel label just released a box set (5CDs, 6LPs, or 2LP highlight edition) of T. Rex material entitled 1972.  It includes: The Slider; Live at Wembley: The Mattinee Show (with two previously unreleased mixes from The Evening Show); an expanded Born to Boogie: The Soundtrack Album; Bolan’s U.S. Radio Sessions; T. Rex Christmas Top of the Pops; non-LP B-sides, & the T. Rex Fan Club 1972 flexidisc.

So I've been re-listening to some & listening to much for the first time. Always loved Marc Bolan, who died much too young in a car crash two weeks before his 30th birthday in Barnes, London, 1977.

Here's some folk you probably all know doing their best to honor a swell lad.

Various - Great Jewish Music: Marc Bolan, Tzadik TZ 7126, 1998.

  2. Nice! I haven't gotten around to listening to the new box set yet but The Slider is an all time fave of mine. Electric Warrior ain't too shabby either. Thanks for comp of cover versions -- will be interesting to compare those versions with those on the recent Hal Wilner (RIP) tribute album. Cheers!

  3. I think you'll find the Hal Winer Angelhead a bit more in the "trad musicality" vein with some great name but more mainstream folks. The Tzadik compilation is what I labeled "Experimental glam", a bit more outré I believe.

  4. There's also some nice tribute comps that were put together by Angelo for his Power Pop Criminals blog last year, one each for The Slider and Electric Warriors:

The Slider (zippy link on blog still working):

    3. Bolan looks like the illegitimate sex-child of Bobby Conn and (his lovely partner) Julie Pomerleau which I'm sure is exactly what the two of them were going for. Speaking of which, if you have any, I'd love to have it! (I've only got a low bitrate version of "Homeland").

    4. Alvin Stardust doing the Gary Glitter thang. Much cocaine, ya think?

I was going to do a Bobbie Conn post sometime back & I just kept putting it off because he is just soooooo crazzzzzzy. Now that you ask, I think I'll revive it. You asked for it. Bolan's hand-on-thigh action was creeping me out. Bobbie Conn is such a kool nerd that he can pull it off.
