Afro Calling

The 3rd of this month I shared some UK Dub as a request from Frenz of NSS Afro.

The share spurred a long discussion in the comments about 80s Sound System & the rise of the British Dub scene, with much further music shared there. Particularly of interest was The Rootsman (Joe Bolloten) & the Disciples. Before January ends, I wanted to share two more items to wrap up that tangent.

First up is one that came out on The Rootsman's Third Eye Music label in 1997.

The Disciples meet The Rootsman - Rebirth, Third Eye Music TEMCD007, 1997.

The next is a live set from The Rootsman's pirate radio program on PCR (Paradise City Radio) Radio Bradford hosting the Disciples with Jah Shaka's Boom Shakalaka Crew. Nearly three hours of music from this crew: tune; interviews; & dubplates. So much music & information here, give it a listen.

  3. Just someone's recording of the program off the radio. Don't know about the sound quality but it was a really enjoyable listen for me. Of course me old ears aren't the greatest, but just hearing the music presented & the between-song conversation was most rewarding.

  6. You are a gem of a human and this is the best rabbit hole I've fallen down in a long time. What's your paypal?

    1. This rabbit hole is deep but there are plenty of safe havens along the way down to stop & savor. Thanks for your kind thoughts. As for paypal, this here is a labor of love. The payment I get is the pleasure other such as yourself get from things they find here. If you have suggestions, requests, or shares, that's what I value. Welcome aboard, Keith.

    2. Tell you what, I'm mid-setup on a private server for my archive, but once it's finished, there is a trove of trip hop I will get you access to, along with the rest of my stuff. My tastes are a little more mainstream than yours overall, but I think there's some stuff in there you would appreciate.

    3. Thank you so much for the generosity. That's the kind of payment that I appreciate. Sharing music is my whole motivation here.

& coincidentally, you brought up Trip-hop. I dedicate September to Dub whenever I can & February to various styles: I've had Black History Month, Fems of February, Glass Animalisms...Well, this February is dedicated to Trip-hop all month.

      Cosmic entanglement.

    1. Thank you for sharing your remembrances of what must have been an incredible scene & time. As you know, I dabble in many styles of music so I'm not always sharing the Dub. But I do favor the Dub more tan other styles, so be patient with my tastes & I'll get back to it as I can. Anything you desire, leave a comment & I'll do what I can. Your original comment spawned a great discussion, great shares, & great fun times for me. Thank you so much.

  12. Greetings NØ , Of course I don t send shout but almost every day when Im on in my job ,I keep on listening to the Rebirth album ,I consider it with Resonation ,as 2 of the masterpiece of Russ D.His collaboration withThe Rootsman is mind blowing-I ve sended emails to John ,trying to convince him to come back to the dub fusion, which I found have more wide horizon than the dancehall....to me the most innovative dancehall is the one of The Mad professor (Featuring Macka B)...
NB-.Covid19 basically destroyed many artists production , I do hope it s bad souvenir far behind us.
How was your eclipse trip? I hope you didn t forget your glasses?
Otherwise best wishes bro and keep flowing the spirit of the Dub music.
    we remain in touch.

I knew you were still around, I often feel your presence, skankin' around to that Dubwise beat in the background of my mind. Stay in touch, brother.
