John Mellor Goes Over the Border with Jimmy Cliff

After gifting Joe Strummer's London Calling BBC radio shows, I couldn't stop listening to more of Joe's own music. I revisited The Clash, The Mescaleros, The 101'ers, & everything else. I decided heading into the new year I would post some that I though you all might like to hear.

First is Joe giving us that good old Eathquake Weather, then a few bootleg releases: When Pigs Fly (a previously unreleased soundtrack LP); Outtakes & Rarities; & the fantastic Collaborations.

Spend some time with Joe, it will be well worth the while & I'll hit you all again next year.

London Calling the Punk Warlord, Come in Please!

This is the project I've been working on to gift to everyone everywhere who loves music.

Also to anyone like myself who really, really misses Joe. Joe's goal in life was building a family of rebels to rebuild a better world in glory. He used his music as his ethos.

Nearly 7 hours worth of excellent musick served up by Joe himself.  I've tried to serve these up as exact as I could.  I replaced any song that I noticed had major sound problems with cleaner, better takes.  I also added Don Letts' Radio 6 Tribute to Joe Strummer as a bonus.

Joe Strummer's London Calling BBC radio show.

Dance Amongst the Stars

A special gift for Pablo from the deep vaults of Woody Dumas & C’est La Mort.

This rare recording features the great vocalist Caroline Seaman (of This Mortal Coil & 808 State) along with didgeridoo player & saxophonist Tony Waerea (This Mortal Coil), bassist Scott Rodger & drummer James Pinker (both of Dead Can Dance). With the band name Heavenly Bodies & the album title Celestial, it's easy to infer that this will be some lush, ethereal music.

Naughty for Satan Claus

Although MrDave should be on the naughty list, we like naughty around here (& we like MrDave, too). So these numerous gifts are hand wrapped for him. He took some wishes from others who weren't using theirs & he claims one of the bands were his college friends, so here goes. I love a good story, ya know. I'll start with my favorite of these...Bill Fay.

UK-based singer, songwriter, & pianist Bill Fay began writing in the early 1960s while studying at university. In 1966 he recorded a demo using the mobile studio of John Boden. Impressed by the demo, ex-Them drummer Terry Noon helped Fay to sign a recording contract with Decca. Between 1967-1971 Fay released a single ("Some Good Advice" / "Screams in the Ears") & two albums, the lush, orchestrated eponymous debut & the rawer second album Time of the Last Persecution. Unfortunately, these recordings did not sell well & Decca decided to end Bill's contract shortly after the second release. He returned to the studio in the late 1970s to record a third album Tomorrow & Tomorrow & Tomorrow which finally saw release in January 2005 on Durtro/Jnana Records.

After not releasing any newly recorded material for over four decades, Bill released a new album of original material in 2012, titled Life Is People. This was followed in 2015 by another new album, Who Is The Sender?, a darker but more poignant affair all together.

Dieselhed formed in 1989 in Arcata, California & later moved to San Francisco, California, playing a blend of country, punk, & pseudo-classic rock. Drummer Heifetz spread his time between Dieselhed & the genre-bending experimentalists Mr. Bungle. Singer-songwriter Virgil Shaw previously played in Arcata outfit Brents T.V.. Bassist Ellis had been a founding member of the local disbanded funk rock band Psychefunkapus while Jonathan Segel was a former member of local indie-faves Camper Van Beethoven.

Shira Small's The Line of Time & the Plane of Now was recorded in 1974 under the auspices of a senior project at The George School, a small Quaker boarding school in Newtown, Pennsylvania. It is the product of Shira Small's four years away from the Wagner Projects in East Harlem. The songs came together from scribblings on a bathroom wall ("Change is life's only constant factor") & a troubling remedial math class ("The line of time & the plane of now").

Recognizing Shira's talent, her music teacher Lars Clutterham convinced Shira to record an album of original material as her senior project. The money to press the album was drummed up by pre-sales & a few generous parents, with all 500 copies being distributed to students & faculty of the George School. As far as I can tell, it is Small's only recordings except for the track “Gimme Magic” from this album which was used in the musical Journey of Persephone which was performed at the George School & released on its soundtrack.

David Holmes began DJing in Belfast in 1985. His first DJ appearance was at the Abercorn Mod Club. His first hit was the 1992 track "De Niro" as the Disco Evangelists, with Ashley Beedle & Lindsay Edwards (later of Tin Tin Out). In the early to mid-1990s, he ran two club nights in the Belfast Art College.

Holmes released his first full length album This Film's Crap Let's Slash the Seats, in July 1995. Inspired by movies & movie soundtracks, this would become a recurring theme throughout Holmes' work. The opening track "No Man's Land" was featured in the film Pi.

Holmes had spent time in New York City in the late 1980s. Minidisc recorder in hand, he
traveled throughout the five boroughs recording the sounds & voices he heard around him.

In the late 90s these recordings were blended with Holmes' production work. The final product was a 59-minute cinematic aural journey through New York's city streets. Let's Get Killed caught the attention of a large listening audience.

He continued blending recorded urban sound into his releases until the early 2000s.

In 1998 Holmes' love of cinema paid off. Actor Danny DeVito commissioned him to do the score for Steven Soderbergh's film Out of Sight. He was tapped to do the 2001 score a for Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven remake.

Finally eschewing the sound bits style he had become infatuated with, he released The Holy Pictures in 2008. Holmes has continued to score movies & television shows to date.

According to many: Monoshock was one of the best bands of the 90s. If they were from Seattle instead of Illa Vista & Oakland, California you would already know that. During their six years they released a handful of 7"s, served as a backing band for Von Lmo, & created one of the classic psych albums of all time, Walk to the Fire. They were raved up by Julian Cope as one of the great unknown bands of the 90s & cited as an influence by Comets on Fire, as well as a whole slew of Japanese psych bands. Monoshock is fuzz-fueled, wah-wah damaged, riff-crazed punk rock which draws upon Hawkwind, the Stooges, Simply Saucer, & other psych-punk gods.

I don't get it, but you decide.

Jackie St. Doll

These gifts are wrapped with loving care specially for Stupiddle.

Blog-friend Stupiddle asked for a gift of Couch Flambeau which I was unfortunately unable to give him. He was kind enough to accept my weak apology & make his second wish of some Jackie Leven. That I was happy to gift.

I came rather late to the Jackie Leven table. My dear friend & fellow blogger Ib Sibling turned me on to Doll by Doll & thence Jackie Leven. He also filled in the gaps here, so I name him officially Satan's little helper.

Jackie was born in 1950 into a Romany family & lived his childhood/teenage years in Fife, Scotland. His father was an Irish Cockney & his mother was from a large Northumberland (Geordie) family so Jackie was an outsider from the get-go. This seemed to give birth to an independence of mind. In his school day Jackie had few friends & the ones he had were considered 'oddball'. His attendance at school was spotty at best, but his truancy spent alone in glens, hills, & by the rivers of Scotland formed the basis for many of his songs' imagery.

In his late teens Jackie hit the road, leaving Fife & Scotland behind. The following years were filled with aimless wandering, sleeping outside, living hand to mouth, including a four months living on the streets of South Bank Centre, London, where he busked for a living.

During this period (late 60s - early 70s) he also lived in County Kerry, Ireland, as well as abroad in Berlin & Madrid. It was there that he released his first album Control under his stage name of John St Field (now considered a psychedelic underground classic).

Back in the UK & living on the street & squats, he met fellow musicians Joe Shaw, David MacIntosh, & Robin Spreafico. Together they formed Doll by Doll (1978 - 1982). They were a controversial live act at odds with the cartoon violence of punk, a sonic slap in the face, the house band from hell killing their guitars at the end of the world. This was head swirling psychedelic blues rock meeting psychotic poetry down a very dark alley. They made five albums: Gypsy - 1979; Remember - 1979; Doll by Doll -1981; Grand Passion - 1982; & Revenge of Memory - unreleased until 2003) before accepting the fact that they just weren't meant for those times &  went their separate ways.

After a late night recording session for a solo album due for release by Charisma/Virgin (1983) Jackie was the subject of an unprovoked street attack during which he was nearly murdered by strangulation. Unable to speak or sing, he lost his record deal, most of his friends, & his own way. He entered an intense period of psychic disorder, became addicted to heroin & living in isolation.

By1985 he had kicked heroin using traditional Chinese five-element acupuncture & psychic healing (his personal demons led him to co-found The CORE Trust...a holistic approach to addiction...the Trust still operates a center in London, working with people with all forms of addiction).

Shortly after kicking drugs, Jackie went to live in Oban on the west coast of Scotland. He spent the nights in bars with his country-folk & the days writing the songs that became the basis of his return to music. He released nearly forty albums before his untimely death in November 2011.

These tunes cover a bit of this heroic journey & I gift them to stupiddle with overwhelming gratitude to Ib. These songs present a timeless edge with vivid insights into the human condition, funny & scary & beautiful all at once.  Listen particularly to "Saint Judas" on Fairy Tales for Hard Men. Saint Judas was Jackie's first band from 1969. They recorded one album, When I Went Out To Kill Myself  (recorded during some BBC sessions in Newcastle) which was never released until 1998. The song "Saint Judas" tells the tale of that album & that time.

These are great songs with all the punch of Matlock's best power-punk swagger combined with Jackie's powerful voice. Just Beating the Clock

Capt. Clark 23 slid in a last minute request. In his request he stated that this was something he could neither afford nor find. I can't think of a better reason to add him to the pile of gifts. This has been specially wrapped for the Captain...

Clock DVA is an industrial post-punk group from Sheffield, England, one of the first groups to arise during the formation of the Sheffield Electronic Scene. Adolphus 'Adi' Newton formed the first lineup of Clock DVA in 1978, after his departure from The Future (whose other members went on to form The Human League & Heaven 17) with Steven 'Judd' Turner -bass, David J. Hammond - guitar, Roger Quail - drums, & Charlie Collins - saxophone, clarinet. The name Clock DVA (as well as Heaven 17) was inspired by the Russian-influenced Nadsat of Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange...Dva is the Russian word for two.

Originally focusing on experimental music inspired by science fiction & the occult, then evolving toward a more industrial/electronic body music sound. In their early days, they released a handful of privately produced cassettes, most of which have since been collected in the Horology boxed sets of lps from the German label Vinyl-On-Demand.

Wrapping up Some Rabid Fish for the Holidaze

These gifts wrapped specially for my dear friend Jonder. I hope all your fish are mad.

Pescado Rabioso was one of many short-lived bands helmed by singer-songwriter Luis Spinetta, who many consider to be the godfather of Argentine rock. He rose to fame in the late Sixties as frontman of Almendra, an experimental band that dared to rock under the military dictatorship of General Juan Carlos Onganía. Spinetta would continue writing & performing audacious guitar songs until he died of lung cancer in 2012.

Pescado Rabioso was: Luis Alberto Spinetta - guitar & vocals; Osvaldo 'Bocón' Frascino - bass & vocals): &  Black Amaya - drums. In 1972 Carlos Cutaia joined the group as a keyboardist while David Lebón replaced Bocón for the recording of their first album Desatormentándonos.

Their second album Pescado II was released in 1973. Due to production problems with the record company, the band called it quits. However, that same year Artaud came out. It is really a Spinetta solo album but is credited to Pescado Rabioso.
