Prompted by My Last Post

Here's a match made in musickal heaven...

The idea for this session came about following the tragic passing of Andrew Weatherall & then an incredible show in Manchester featuring Dub maestro Adrian Sherwood a few days later. At the start of the evening Adrian paid touching tribute to Andrew Weatherall, friend & oft-times collaborator.

This mix celebrates those connections with selections from both producers that span nearly 40 years from squelchy Dub in the early 80s through to deep electronica from 2020. The pallet of both producers is vast. The session features both of their work with Primal Scream, as well as Dub to pulsing floor fillers. The commonality here is heavyweight bass.

Mixed by Gentleman Kush.

Musick that Needed Work: N - Noiseshaper

As I've stated before when I reopened this can of worms --- 2015 --- at the time I opened a folder (always a dangerous act) I had labeled: "Musick that Needs Work". It was a Pandora's box of files that needed some special attention, meaning anything from missing tracks to cleaning up the sound to fixing the tags to getting the art work, whatever.

Noiseshaper is a Dub/reggae duo formed in 2000 in Austria, now based in Berlin, Germany made up of Florian Fleischmann & Axel Hirn. Their music incorporates Dub, conventional reggae, electronic music, & numerous other genres.

This one from Noiseshaper is on the Echo Beach label, arguably the greatest German Dub label. It was founded in 1996 by Nicolai Beverungen, label manager for On-U Sound & Crammed Discs Germany. Recorded at On-U Sound Studio, London & deftly mixed, Dubbed, & over-Dubbed by Adrian Sherwood.

Musick that Needed Work: N - Nils Landgren

As I've stated before when I reopened this can of worms --- 2015 --- at the time I opened a folder (always a dangerous act) I had labeled: "Musick that Needs Work". It was a Pandora's box of files that needed some special attention, meaning anything from missing tracks to cleaning up the sound to fixing the tags to getting the art work, whatever.

The Man with the Red Horn - Nils Landgren

Born in 1956, Nils Landgren began playing drums at the age of six, before finally discovering the trombone at age 13. Between 1972 & 1978 Nils studied classical trombone at the music college in Karlstad with David Maytan , as well as at the University in Arvika with Ingemar Roos.

After his graduation Nils moved to Stockholm to work as a professional trombone player.
He was soon touring with the most successful Swedish pop star of that time, Björn Skifs who got to #1 in the US pop charts with "Hooked on a Feeling". In 1981 Thad Jones invited the Nils to join his new big band project Ball of Fire as lead trombone.

During his career, Nils Landgren has been involved in many musical styles: jazz, rock, soul, hip-hop, Big Band, funk...by his own reckoning, hundreds of albums including such international stars as ABBA, The Crusaders, Eddie Harris, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Wyclef Jean, Herbie Hancock, Ray Parker Jr., & more

In 1992 Nils formed the Unit which in 1994 became The Funk Unit. Numerous albums came out of this Funk Unit & Nils created Funk for Life, teaming up with Doctors Without Borders, contributing one Euro of every unit sold. In 2007 Nils Landgran Funk Unit released their eighth funk album Licence to Funk teaming up with Ray Parker Jr.

Here's NLFU's second paring with Ray...

Natural Self is the ongoing project of producer, vocalist, & DJ Nathaniel Pearn. Originally inspired by the rhythmic force of The Bomb Squad, hip hop was the primary influence on his first forays into music before crate digging culture shed light on a whole new range of influences from funk to soul, jazz, latin, & electronica. 2008 saw Pearn releasing his highly anticipated album entitled The Art of Vibration.

It was a Pandora's box of files that needed some special attention, meaning anything from missing tracks to cleaning up the sound to fixing the tags to getting the art work, whatever.

Noel Ellis is the son of legendary Studio One/Treasure Isle recording artist Alton Ellis.

This self-titled debut was recorded in Toronto in 1979 by studio wizard Jerry Brown for the pioneering Summer Records, Canada's answer to Lee Perry's Black Ark Studios. This platter is the third release in the Summer Records Jamaica to Toronto seven album series.

This self-titled features six Dub-influenced, heavy yet ethereal tracks with contributions from OG reggae maestros Jackie Mittoo, Willi Williams, & Johnny Osbourne. "Rocking Universally" is rhythmically influenced by Willi Williams' "Armagideon Time" (covered by The Clash).

Here tasteful keys, varied percussion, essential echo, Dub changeovers along with Noel's impeccable mic control gives an otherworldly twist to Summer's remarkable drum & bass sound.

Sez to be: "an end-to-end burner for midnight tokers & cool rulers alike".

Back to a Series I Started in 2015

As I've stated before when I reopened this can of worms --- 2015 --- at the time I opened a folder (always a dangerous act) I had labeled: "Musick that Needs Work". It was a Pandora's box of files that needed some special attention, meaning anything from missing tracks to cleaning up the sound to fixing the tags to getting the art work, whatever. In the eight & a half years since I started this, I have finished through letter M.

December 5, 2023 I once more tackled this task. Dial M for Music. I made myself a promise that I'd make my way through to the end in some timely fashion. The problem is, I keep adding musick that needs work to this folder, so although I've moved onward through the alphabet, the letters I come to now keeping having more items than when I began. Such is mania.

Well, here’s N. Up first is Nash the Slash...

Three Epics - Part Six: Zen Takes Control

In 2006, Zenzile teamed up with fellow French Dubsters High Tone (from Lyon, France) to release Zentone. High Tone is another instrumental Dub group (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, & turntables) that like Zenzile, breaks all the boundaries that separate Dub from electronic music, ethnical, world music influences. with jungle intros, Oriental samples, beats & scratches that broadens the already fluid borders of Zenzile.

Following Living in Monochrome, Zenzile expanded their sound in numerous sound experiments: (Pawnshop - pop); (Electric Soul - soul); (Berlin - film soundtrack); (Elements - audio-visual installation). I will explore those four in a further edition featuring this great band. But for now, I'm missing the Zenzile Dub. What began as Dub became broad & cinematic, with the band dabbling in rock, progressive, electro, new wave, funk-punk or krautrock until Dub had almost completely disappearred on the 2017s Elements release. But Elements was the final stage of a long enriching musical exploration because by straying too far from Dub Zenzile ended up missing the Dub they truly loved.

Zenzile sez:
"We want to dive back into uninhibited, fresh & danceable Dub. A pure & hard Dub à la original Zenzile. We have come full circle & are ready with a host of new riddims & a slogan that could not be clearer: DUB UNLIMITED."

First they released a new addition to their 5+1 series with guest vocalist Jayree, a classic JA style set of five vocal tracks followed by their versions. Next was a trad vocal/Dub pairing set, this time teaming up with Irie Ites featuring Trinity. More recently, Zenzile has teamed up with High Tone again for another Zentone album. Here's that second meeting...

Three Epics - Part Five: Zile Under Zed

Zenzile is a Dub band from Angers, France formed in 1996. They took their name from the famous South African poet & anti-apartheid activist, Zenzile Miriam Makeba. The band is made up of, at various times, Alexandre Raux, Erik Sevret, Javier Maillet, Jean Christophe Wauthier, Matthieu Bablee, & Vincent Erdeven.

Dub is usually an instrumental style, but the musicians of Zenzile are well-known for their leftist politics & often give voice to their beliefs lyrically with regular guest singers Jamika Ajalon, David Alderman, & Jean Gomis.

Zenzile is a forerunner in the French 21st Century Dub movement but their style is unique, incorporating rock, electronics, punk, soul jazz, even folk. Always riddim driven, each new release focuses on the bands musically superb talents. One never knows what an upcoming Zenzile release will sound like other than that it will be great.

In 1998, Zenzile self-released their debut, a four song EP Dub Promozione to introduce themselves to the world.

Three Epics - Part Four: Drop 2...The Elusive Fame

Even with the limited European release, increasing numbers of people were listening. Band friends Leftfield had been checking their releases. Paul Daley suggested that Pressure Drop sign to Leftfield's Hard Hands label. Tearing the Silence EP was released in 1995. Tearing the Silence gained widespread respect, enough to land a deal with Columbia's British club culture Higher Ground sublabel & the release of Pressure Drop's critically acclaimed third album, 1997s Elusive. The writing was on the wall.

Pressure Drop's music was born out of a musical fusion reflecting the multi-ethnic culture the duo  both grew up with in London during a golden age in 20th century music. Three Epics - Part Three: Pressure 1

The second group covered by Three Epics in this series is Pressure Drop & the musical partnership of Justin Langlands / Dave Henley. I intimated about this part in a post last month, No Pressure

In the late 80s & early 90s in many parts of the UK, illegal rave warehouse parties were combining bass/drum throbbing Dub with scratchy blues dance grooves & hip-hop beats to create a new sound. Mutual friend DJ Paul Guntrip enlisted Dave & Justin to play their eclectic selection of funk, soul, hip-hop, rap, reggae, early house, & film soundtracks at his Heavy Duty night in the Wag Club, London.

After some sampladelic garage singles, Pressure Drop released their first album, 1992s Upset. Upset was written, recorded, produced, & mixed between 1990-1991, in a rented room situated in a house near Ladbroke Grove, London, which was used by the independent record company Big World as offices. It consisted of an intro, an outro, & 11 full tracks featuring six guest vocalists including performances by Joanna Law, the sister of Simon Law who played piano with Soul to Soul; Mark Cornell, who later formed the band Sunchilde; & Rob Gallagher/Constantine Weir of Galliano; with Paul Daley, co-founder of Leftfield on percussion alongside saxophonist Scott Garland & jazz trumpet player Gerard Presencer.

The album was licensed from Big World but due to an unfortunate business situation it was only released in Germany, Austria & Switzerland on Boombastic Records. Later that year Logic Records licensed it, releasing a limited number of copies in the UK as a double 12" vinyl format.

Three Epics - Part One: Salmon 1

Today I am starting a six part series sharing the works of three different bands. Each of the three is difficult to pigeon-hole into a particular genre. They each have their own unique styles that have created epic aural works.

All three are adjacent to Dub in some ways & that brought them to my attention over the years. While some bands stick to one recognizable style throughout their career (which can be good or bas) & some bands wear numerous guises (which can be bad or good), these three all speak through a voice true to their talents without falling into repetition.

I will try to begin at their beginnings with the sounds that first caught my ears & then travel through their wonderous diversity. All I can say is plunge in anywhere, beginning, middle, or end. Listen in any order you deem suitable to your mood. But most of all, Enjoy.

The first group in this series is Salmonella Dub.

Last Dubtember I began the month with two of their Dub Plate offerings, which you can find here.

.

Salmonella Dub is a Dub outfit from Christchurch, New Zealand formed in 1992 by members of Golf Course Alligators. GCA would use lighthearted Dub covers of Nancy Sinatra, The Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds, Public Enemy, even Fred Daggs "Larry Loves Barry" to win over skeptical audiences. They took the name Salmonella Dub because of these "bad-taste" Dub cover versions. At the time in New Zealand, Dub/roots/reggae freak-outs weren't in vogue. Grunge & dance music held sway. In the early 90s, New Zealand's liquor licensing laws changed, allowing pubs & clubs to stay open late, totally revitalizing the country's live music scene. The members of Golf Course Alligators (Andrew Penman - guitar, Mark Tyler - bass, & Dave Deakins -drums) officially became Salmonella Dub. In the early days they lacked money for cassettes so they raided the bins of a record store, finding discarded copies of things like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles albums to serve as their early tape stock.

Dub for Straights is an early self-released  CD from Salmonella Dub. All tracks were recorded live at Bob's Magic Carpet Studios in August 1993 except ''Reggi Flute'' recorded live at the Dux de Luxe 10/03/1993 & ''We the Dub Yore'' recorded in 1994. David Wernham, the band's engineer tidied up versions recovered off old cassettes & put them out on CD.

Smeg 1: Dripping with Smegma

As I mentioned in the cheese-like post from last month, I've got plenty of Smegma & I'm not ashamed to admit in. In fact, I'm willing to share it with you here.

Smegma was founded in Pasadena, California in 1973, but moved to Oregon two years later. At the onset, they were part of the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS). LAFMS formed in the 1970s as a loose-knit experimental music collective & multimedia publishing vehicle. Originally started by teenage Le Forte Four members Chip Chapman, Joe Potts, & Rick Potts, soon joined by Tom Recchion of Doo-Dooettes, LAFMS incorporated free improvisation, modular synthesizers, tape music, sampling, musique concrète, homemade instruments, noise, mail art. & avant-rock in permissive anarchic sessions at the Raymond Building & at Poo-Bah Record Shop in old Pasadena.

Poo-Bah Records, with its import bins & backroom jam space, attracted the pseudonymous artists forming the initial incarnation of long-running collective Smegma. Early members Ju Suk Reet Meate, Dennis Duck, Cheez-it Ritz, Big Dirty, Amazon Bambi, & Dr. Id contributed to various LAFMS compilations & combos before several core members relocated to Portland, where they recorded their debut album Glamour Girl 1941

Beyond its roots in LAFMS, Smegma would help shape the early Portland punk scene in the late 70s alongside Wipers & Neo Boys. Back then, virtually nobody thought it was cool to be in a band made up primarily of non-musicians, much less one that combined fried free improv moves with nods to straight 1950s rock & roll.

Ju Suk Reet Meate sez:
"If we played at a party in the 1970s, there would be a riot. People would hate us, and be physically threatening! People didn't put up with weirdo shit."
