I've decided to revive Dub September. The last one (2021) was a huge success. This time I'm set to outdo myself.
Every day in September I'm going to feature artists that I've never shared before around this here mess (other than perchance in compilations [many]). I'm calling them Newcomers to NSS
Not only that, but when I checked through the 180+ individual Dub postings (many with multiple files) (see Dub in "Labels" list right) to index which artists I have already featured, I compiled a score card of individual posts of Dub artists. It won't be surprising to many that Lee Perry & King Tubby topped the lists. But Sly & Robbie, Keith Huson, Mad Professor...more & more had multiple offerings. So throughout the month I will randomly pair up Newcomers to NSS with top-featured artists, trying to come up with legitimate heavy-weight releases for each star who I'm labeling Dubly Beloved.
I am starting the month off with two disparate acts: Newcomers to NSS Salmonella Dub, never featured here before, & Soul Revivers who are in reality popular Dubly Beloved NSS Dubster Nick Manasseh paired up with David Hill (ex-Ballistic Brothers).
First up, 2020s style roots-reggae Soul Revivers are the brainchild of Nick Manasseh & David Hill. In 2022 they released On the Grove, an acid-jazz tinged reggae outing that takes as its base the reggae culture from the late 1970s then layers on Manasseh's magic touch mixed with David Hill's acid-jazz with guests including reggae legends Ernest Ranglin, Ken Boothe, & Earl 16. The set was recorded at Manasseh's own West London facility Yard Studios, with Ken Boothe & Ernest Ranglin's contributions being taped in Kingston, Jamaica.
Here we have the Dub version of that album, Grove Dub...this is 2022 old skool, fool...

At the other end of the glorious spectrum that is Dub is Salmonella Dub Sound System, a Dub group from Christchurch, New Zealand formed in 1992 by Andrew Penman - guitar, Mark Tyler - bass, & Dave Deakins - drums. They are one of my favorite ourfits hearalding the greatness of 21st Century Dub to come.

ReplyDeleteDon't blow a gasket this soon out of the gate. This is only the first day. New Dub post every day this glorious Dubtember. Pace yourself.
DeleteOh, this is gonna be great! I am *so* looking forward to it...shame that the month only has 30 days.
ReplyDeleteWith my short attention span, 30 posts in 30 days is pushing my limit. That's why I choose September & February for my specials. At least Dub gets 1 or 2 more days. Thanks for the comment. Hope this Dubtember lives up to your expectations.
