Crash Course in Crash Course...Jump Over Barrels

Mining the vein of The Normal, I give you Crash Course in Science.

Crash Course In Science are a minimal synth post punk band that formed in 1979 in Philadelphia. The band members, Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, & Michael Zodorozny met while attending art school. Inspired by performance art & the punk scene, they began to write quirky songs about household items, utilizing extremely rudimentary drum machines, toy instruments, & kitchen appliances augment the distorted guitar, drums and synthesized beats.

I posted their first single, Crash Course in Science - Cakes in the Home (1979) here & their 4-song 12" EP Signals from Pier Thirteen (1981) here.

I thougt everyone might like a bit more. After years without hearing from CCiS, in 2005 Mr Sam (Samuel Joël Paquet) appearred featuring the resurrected Crash Course in Science with Flying Around. Since then a slew of singles & two full-lengths (2011 & 2017) have been released.

I'm sticking with the shorts.

Yeah, I said the short ones, but when I was previewing these with a friend of mine (a Crash Course in Science fan), he said it was good but his favorite has always been 2011s Near Marineland. One of my all-time faves of their, "Jump Over Barrels (remix)" is on this disc. So as per his suggestion, here goes.

Poison Honey

Note: I haven't even had time to digest the newly arrived Horace Andy / Adrian Sherwood joint Midnight Scorchers & now The Mars Volta's latest self-titled showed up in yesterday's deliveries. You'll have to excuse me, I've got to go play with myself. Here's something sweet as a treat...neat...allreeet!

Flykkiller is the brainchild of Pati Yang (Patrycja Grzymałkiewicz) & Stephen Hilton. Pati Yang is an acclaimed electronic artists from Poland, an electronic balladeer whose sirenesque tones & joy of experimentation in music have garnered her world-wide accolades. Her husband Stephen Hilton is a musical partner of David Holmes, is co-founder of The Free Association, has provided the beats behind many soundtracks (four James Bond movies, Ocean's 11, 12, & 13, Zoolander, Spiderman 2, more) & has produced albums for Pulp, Depeche Mode, & Trevor Horn. Stephen also co-wrote with Siouxsie Sioux her album Mantaray.

Experiments in Violent Light is Flykkiller's only full length. Patti now fronts the Patti(extra t now?) Yang Group whose latest was 2019's War on Love. On EVL Pati whispers & wails enchanting songs hurled like threatening spells, each song a disturbed vignette out of a David Lynch evoking storyline. The underlying beats stutter through minimal & mechanical breaks with Electro finesse creating a synapse sizzling Electro Rock with soulful Gothic vocals & warped horror-soundtrack atmospheres.

Transylvanian Gris Gris

Around Casa Nada del Este lately I've been listening to all things Lil Obeah since I bought Lil Obeah - From Transylvania & Lil Obeah - In Dub. It's so hot to me right now that I so wanted to share with everyone here, but I think everyone should support the artist & buy it yourselves, so I wasn't sure what to do. Just chill & enjoy it myself. But that's not really my style. I love to share what I'm bumpin' or bangin' or groovin’ to at the moment. What to Do?

Then I came across this 2+ hour mixtape from Lil Obeah hisself. I split the tracks & cut it into two parts. It contains numerous tracks from Lil Obeah's latest as well as songs that soothe his ears.

Lil Obeah (Andrei Bucureci) is a curator, musicologist, art director, & entrepreneur. He has been a vital part of various projects such as Tunesinourheads, Abator Industries, Crowd Control, Creionetica, Black Rhino Music, Black Rhino Radio & A4Activism.

Andrei recently began releasing under the moniker Lil Obeah on the Sound of Art to Come label.

The Sound of Art to Come Records is a partnership started by Andrei & Cristiana Bucureci. It is a multi-faceted Transylvanian platform, publishing house, & record label, where dub, electronic & experimental artists from all over the world come together. From the depths of Romania, Andrei & Cristiana offer monthly a unique selection of works of art, collages, music, & remixes inspired by the intersection between Pop Art, multiculturalism, & horror movie soundtracks.

Lil Obeah also hosts a monthly show on Black Rhino Radio called Everyday is Halloween with sessions dedicated to Jamaican music as well as dub, reggae, & bass sounds from all over the world with a dark spooky haunting aesthetic. It may seem unusual but Everyday is Halloween focuses on the sounds that bridge the gap between pop art culture, comic books, horror movies, from both Romanian & Caribbean culture. His programs approximate imaginary Eastern EU pirate radio shows from another dimension.

This Lil Obeah Everyday is Halloween mixtape features exclusive remixes, never-heard-before original songs from the Sound of Art to Come renegade Transylvanian label, & inspirational tunes from great artist of Romania & across the globe. Fantastic selections from all the Sound of Art to Come crew, a fine smattering of Romanian guest artist, & it ends off with Denis Bovell & The Slits. What more can ya ask for in a mixtape?

Note: the tracklist with the Asymetric mp3 is not accurate. After "Le Serpent Qui Danse Dub" it veers awry & good luck figuring what the SNAFU is. I have the original 2:37:25 version if anyone wants to attempt the unravel. What I have done is compile the tracks as they are listed.

Second note: while working on this, a friend dropped by from Pittsburgh & brought my copy of Horace Andy - Midnight Scorchers which I had previously ordered from the nearest record store (90+ miles away) that was going to have it. If you don't know...continuing a series that Adrian Sherwood began with Heavy Rain, his re-working of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's Rainford album, Midnight Scorchers is both the essential sequel to Midnight Rocker as well as being a powerful stand-alone album. So I'm off on a Sherwood 'sound system' Dubplate. But please give this mixtape a listen. Powerful concept & a taste of things Lil Obeah-style for the uninitiated. Hope you enjoy.

Are You Paranoid??? Nearly??? 60%??? 70%???

This here mess is dredged from the twisted minds of Mancunian CP Lee (of Albertos y los Trios Paranoias) & Liverpool musician, music arranger, songwriter, producer, & visual artist John Scott.

This may be the music you were never meant to hear.

In the decaying days of the 1970s, the situationist-indebted masked art-rock studio duo Gerry & the Holograms began their reign of sarcasm. Their sound arose from the electronic embers of Albertos y los TP via Vertigo commissioned prog & experimental theatre. It was then refined through the musical mind behind the most inspired vinyl moments of Martin 'Zero' Hannett, John Cooper Clarke, & Jilted John. This is the only music of this anti–band, alleged to be the most idiosyncratic, enigmatic post–punk artifact of our time.

During the tenure of these art-crazies, they only released two singles on Absurd Records in 1979. Their first single Meet the Dissidents, Absurd Records ABSURD 4 contained the two tracks "GATH" & "Increased Resistance". Both songs are found here on this "Lost 1979 L.P. by Mancunian D.I.Y Sarcastic Synth-Pop Anonimites" as well as the previously unplayable "Emporer's New Music" & much more.

Their second single, The Emperor's New Music, Absurd Records ABSURD 5 contained the song "The Emperor's New Music". At the time of its release, the record was a favorite of Frank Zappa's. It was in fact a conceptual but unplayable record. Each record was pasted with glue to the inside of the picture sleeve. Absurd Records label boss Lawrence Beedle said, "It took the best part of a week to paint & glue them into the bags".

In 1982 Gerry & the Holograms reappeared alongside noted British free jazz saxophonist Lol Coxhill & an unnamed female vocalist as 48 Chairs. 70% Paranoid is a rare album that parallels New York City's No-wave scene of about the same time.

People Forget

Antemasque is a burlesque & grotesque dance performed before or between the acts of the real show, the royal fete; it is a true spectacle of disorder handled by seasoned professionals.

Here's some post-Mars Volta Antemasque with: Cedric Bixler-Zavala - lead vocals; Omar Rodríguez-López - guitar; Flea - bass; & David Elitch - drums.

Only around for about a year (2014 -2015), with Omar's brother Marfred Rodríguez-López - bass & Travis Barker - drums while touring. This is their only full-length, with a single & a four-song CD EP.

I'm always cruising around the interweb, looking for interesting music on various blogs. I'll see or hear something out there that sets me on a path, a new musical journey.

This time I was drawn to a posting on myvinyldreams. There you'll mostly find 80s/90s vinyl (usually singles & EPs) with all the extra tracks & remixes that come with the singles releases.

DJjedredy (Primary School teacher in Manchester. Vinyl junkie & 80s nostalgia freak) posted X Mal Deutschland - Sickle Moon 12" single. Get it here. Always a big fan of XMD, so I thought maybe I'd post up their singles from their first, Schwarze Welt 7" from 1981 up to Sickle Moon.

Prompted by Other Blogs, Part 1

I'm always cruising around the interweb, looking for interesting music. I'll see or hear something out there that sets me on a path, a new musical journey.

I frequent Holland Tunnel Dive multiple times a week. It is a treasure trove of rare or hard to find oddities, just what I'm always looking for in my music searches.

This past Tuesday Jillem posted a compilation of Bristol, England bands issued by Emotinal Rescue who teammed up with Bristol Archive Records to showcase some Dub / Funk/ Afro sounds that had originally been released on Recreatinal Records label in 1981-82. Check it out.

Three of the four songs ever released by Scream & Dance are on the compilation. They were a band similar to one of my other favorites of that time, style, & region...Glaxo Babies. A great find. On the same comp were two songs from the band Talisman that I used to enjoy that had completely fallen off of my radar.

Talisman is a great roots rock band that are still active today. Me being a Dub fan, I have compiled a number of their Dub tracks for your enjoyment. Thanks Holland Tunnel Dive for sparking my memory.

The Weather Prophets was formed in 1986 by Peter Astor - guitar & vocals & Dave Morgan - drums when their previous band, The Loft, broke up. The original line-up had Creation Records head-honcho Alan McGee playing bass, but he became their manager when Astor & Morgan recruited David Greenwood Goulding - bass & Oisin Little - guitar to complete the line up.

Help One of the Good Ones

I just learned from Music*Hertz blog that iconic bass player / producer Bill Laswell is in need of help from his fans, friends, & fellow artists.

A note from Bill, titled "Entering the 2nd phase of Sacred Begging: EMERGENCY" included details of Laswell's difficulties over the pandemic with preexisting health conditions, his recent eviction from his Manhattan home, & his struggle to hold on to the lease of his legendary New Jersey studio, Orange Music.

A GoFundMe (see link below) campaign is set up & has been receiving tremendous support from Bill's global network of fans responding with an outpouring of love & support. If you cherish this man as I do, help out, as I have.

Read "Translations in Dub: A Conversation with Bill Laswell" for an in-depth & intimate visit with the man himself.

& you can donate to Bill Laswell's GoFundMe.

Enjoy "Baron Samedi"...the first track from Bill Laswell, Mick Harris, & Eraldo Bernocchi:
