Don't Be Such a Phag, Art

I decided to brave the Wilds the other day & started going through a folder I have called “Musick that Needs Work”. That means anything from cleaning up the sound to fixing the tags to getting the art work, whatever. So far I’m still in the ‘A’s (where I got the previous post American Taboo). Guess I’ll just keep on in alphawhatical order for a while longer (until boredom sets in or my attention span is maxed).

Now going by the handle Len von Speedcult, Len Puch is a metal fabricator, artist, & a musician. He likes making things & that's what he has done with his life: he has made things.

First he made music, in bands with names like Country Bob & the Bloodfarmers, a psychobilly/cowpunk band from the early 80s. They released one album on the Manster label.

Then he formed Snake-Out. This punk-gore-psychobilly-trash rock outfit created the template for the Detroit Garage sound. Modern-day hipsters might glorify the "old days" of Detroit Garage by name-checking as the "originators" of that scene the Gories. Well, Len produced their first album on his Wanghead with Lips label (he also produced the first album by Nine Pound Hammer).

Snake-Out is: Len Puch – guitar & vocals; Greg Mitchell – bass; & Tim Reagan – drums & yelps.

American Taboo was a post-punk/art-wave band from Chicago, IL. having both a detached cold wave feel with quirky discordant spasms radiating & rumbling around. Interesting arrangements & insightful lyrics. Came with something of a press kit which is included, so you can see more info on the band, the songs, & old ‘zine reviews.

AT consisted of: David PurPur – guitar & vocals; Brian Friedler – keyboards & vocals, Barbara Gillies – saxophone; Bob Jones – bass; & David Mahany – drums with various other percussion provided by all.

The Best of Both Worlds?

This is a re-dub version of the Bullwackie/Perry release Satan Kicked the Bucket recorded in 1988 at Bullwackie's studio in New Jersey ("Ooh La La Dub" was recorded at Perry's resurrected Black Ark studio in Kingston). Having largely given up production work by then, Scratch concentrated on performing & singing in his own unique stream-of-consciousness style over Bullwackie's dub-influenced, more electronic tunes. Satan Kicked the Bucket is a fairly mundane release for both Bullwackie & Perry (compared to Bullwackies releases from the early 80s or Perry’s From the Secret Laboratory with Adrian Sherwood two years later).

In Satan’s Dub is a much better version. It features the Chosen Brothers & has a deeper, darker, funkier vibe with plenty of Perry’s surreal verbal excursions (rough vocals accompanied by grunts, squawks, assorted ranting & raving). Wackies All Stars created a fine groove & Bullwackie let it run more than he manipulated the sound, producing a work surprisingly minimalist in its approach. This re-dub plays to all the highlight of the original without its glaring faults.

The Teriyakis’ post (Make Mine Veggie Teriyaki) has been getting a lot of downloads, one of the most popular non-Dub posts as of late. Decided to post up some more material by that under-appreciated group.

Since that posting I have been in contact with Hiram Lucke – vocals, guitar, organ (bass organ) & saxophone (amongst other instruments & duties) of the Yakis & his life/band mate Melissa Rodenbeck. After the Teriyakis demise, Hiram & Melissa formed The Harvey Girls band in August of 2003 in Lawrence, Kansas. They have since moved to Portland, OR. Most of their back catalogue is available on their bandcamp site so if you’re not familiar with their music, go give it a listen. If you like what you hear, support them.

I try not to post up music that is currently available from bands. That is their hard-earned livelihood. But Melissa thought it might be great for them to send me a kinda Best of The Harvey Girls sampler to give everyone a taste. I’ll be doing that sometime soon.

HL & MR have been such warm & open folks. It has been a real joy communicating with them. Hiram sent me some Teriyakis that I didn’t have & explained away a few oddities (I’ve owned their Psychics to Sidekicks CD for many years but have always been baffled…six songs listed, but only five songs on the disk??? Hiram straightened that out).

But enough talk…on with the musick!

I'm Trippin' on LSP Right Now

I couldn’t wait any longer to post up my week-end Dub mix. This mix features Lee Perry. (aka Scratch, the Upsetter, the Super-Ape, Pipecock Jackxon, the Firmament Computer, Inspector Gadget).

I just got my tickets to the Dub Champions Festival with Lee "Scratch" Perry & Subatomic Sound System: 40th Anniversary of Super Ape, Thursday, September 3, 2015 in San Francisco. I'm really psyched (though not so trim).

With “People Funny Boy”, Perry used what may be the first sampling (a baby crying to goad his former boss, Joe Gibbs) & created the style that would become reggae. Along with King Tubby, he was one of the instigators of Dub. He was probably the most prolific producer of all. Perry’s style consisted of improvising his cuts on the fly, whirling like a dervish behind the mixing board, blowing ganja smoke directly onto the tape reels. He would drink tape head cleaner when he ran out of Dragon Stout. By the late 70s Perry was seeing UFOs, kicking out any dreadlocks from Black Ark, & covering the walls with deranged scatological prophecies. In 1979, during a bout of severely eccentric behavior, Perry supposedly trashed & burned his studio & may have wound up briefly in a mental institution.

Perry has given up the demon Alcohol & the Jah ganga (he’s 79 years of age) & lives in Switzerland with his wife Mireille & a couple kids.

He is still recording (two tracks here are from 2014) & performing (Lee Perry & the White Belly Rats, Lee Perry & Dub Is A Weapon, Lee Perry & Dubblestandart; Lee Perry & Subatomic Sound System).

Currently there are two feature length movies about his life & work: Volker Schaner's Vision of Paradise & The Upsetter by filmmakers Ethan Higbee & Adam Bhala Lough.

But enough about LSP. If you’re here now, you already know. I’m just rambling.

Keep the Sand Outta the SIM

Africa’s latest renaissance is propelled largely by the indigenous technological transformation brought about by the proliferation of one device, the mundane mobile telephone, which has become a powerful instrument for human advancement.

Africa has been described as the first mobile-only continent. Mobile phones double as computers, payment devices, medical reminders, flashlights, & music players. The mobile phone is being used to preserve & strengthen democracy. The use of this technology for human advancement is much more innovative in Africa than anywhere else in the world.

The mobile phone is now sufficiently powerful & inexpensive, its coverage across most sub-Saharan African countries is so sufficiently extensive, that Africans are able to benefit from a means of communication & a mode of sharing that had largely passed the continent by.

It is now one of the main devices for sharing music from around the continent & around the world. Songs from far-flung locales are swapped via SIM cards on city streets & rural villages. A single cell phone can provide a myriad of music artists from all over Africa.

In 2008, Chris Kirkley went to West Africa to record folk music. "At first I ignored the cell phones because that’s not part of what I was looking for. I wanted to record traditional music. It took me a while to look at the cell phone & be like, it’s the radio, it’s the television, it’s how people are consuming media now."  Here are the results.

Daniel John Riddle is King Black Acid.

Riddle was born on a hippie commune in the 1960s. He doesn't know the exact date. He grew up in the company of rockers. His mother's boyfriend worked for the Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Santana, & the Allman Brothers. Riddle moved to Portland from San Francisco in the late 80s. He became known in the local rock scene as both a nine-year employee of the infamous rock venue Satyricon & as the bassist of the experimental industrial/noise tribal alt-rock band Hitting Birth.

Hitting Birth started out playing found materials in open-mic music cabarets. In their first appearances, Riddle & David Parks adopted the shopping cart as their central instrument. Later they morphed into a crazed rhythm & scream factory. Their live shows were ecstatic wildly unpredictable events with multiple drummers, strange stage props, & above-mentioned screaming. Translating this live chaos into studio albums was a hard row.

The band has said about their attempts: "although we never were able to capture in the recording studio what we could do live…..we had fun trying."

All that being said, IMO both of these releases, the earlier on the great Tim/Kerr label & the Freest are both most worthy.

Riddle began recording music under the name King Black Acid as a high school student in the late 1980s but it wasn’t until the early 90s that Daniel found his voice in KBA. He also switched from bass to guitar as weapon of choice. King Black Acid is Riddle’s persona to channel his musical muse more than an actual band. All King Black Acid material is written by Riddle, who sings & plays guitar during live shows but who plays a variety of other instruments in his own recording studio, Mazinga Studio, where he produces the releases under the name King Black Acid.

There have been numerous iterations of KBA: the Electric Chair Band; the Womb Star Orchestra; the Starseed Transmission; the 144,000 Piece Acid Army; or the Sacred Heart. Each variation has featured guitar-fueled, effects-heavy sonic free-for-alls. They are known for ethereal, melancholy grooves with a hypnotic rock sound. My personal favorites are from the Womb Star era.
