On any post, if the link is no longer good, leave a comment if you want the music re-uploaded. As long as I still have the file, or the record, cd, or cassette to re-rip, I will gladly accommodate in a timely manner all such requests.

And Lee Scratch Perry...

And... February

Every February I try to have a theme that I carry through the entire month. It began with Black History Month (fuck Trump!!!) & has included Fems of February, Trip-hop February, Synth-pop February, well you get the idea.

This month I am featuring music from an artist that I hold in the highest esteem. Founder & head of Ariwa Studios, producer Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser, the one & only Mad Professor is that man. I have shared his music here more than any other artist (except for the stealth Muslimgauze links) & with the addition of this month, that record will go unchallenged.

Mad Professor has worked with fellow artist around the world, a truly eclectic bunch of collabs. So this month each day will be Mad Professor & somebody new...

Starting off the month is the one artist Mad Professor has collaborated with the most often, the two having released more than a dozen albums & a bunch of singles together. This is their first joint. Two mad men in Dub.

The Best of Both Worlds?

This is a re-dub version of the Bullwackie/Perry release Satan Kicked the Bucket recorded in 1988 at Bullwackie's studio in New Jersey ("Ooh La La Dub" was recorded at Perry's resurrected Black Ark studio in Kingston). Having largely given up production work by then, Scratch concentrated on performing & singing in his own unique stream-of-consciousness style over Bullwackie's dub-influenced, more electronic tunes. Satan Kicked the Bucket is a fairly mundane release for both Bullwackie & Perry (compared to Bullwackies releases from the early 80s or Perry’s From the Secret Laboratory with Adrian Sherwood two years later).

In Satan’s Dub is a much better version. It features the Chosen Brothers & has a deeper, darker, funkier vibe with plenty of Perry’s surreal verbal excursions (rough vocals accompanied by grunts, squawks, assorted ranting & raving). Wackies All Stars created a fine groove & Bullwackie let it run more than he manipulated the sound, producing a work surprisingly minimalist in its approach. This re-dub plays to all the highlight of the original without its glaring faults.

I'm Trippin' on LSP Right Now

I couldn’t wait any longer to post up my week-end Dub mix. This mix features Lee Perry. (aka Scratch, the Upsetter, the Super-Ape, Pipecock Jackxon, the Firmament Computer, Inspector Gadget).

I just got my tickets to the Dub Champions Festival with Lee "Scratch" Perry & Subatomic Sound System: 40th Anniversary of Super Ape, Thursday, September 3, 2015 in San Francisco. I'm really psyched (though not so trim).

With “People Funny Boy”, Perry used what may be the first sampling (a baby crying to goad his former boss, Joe Gibbs) & created the style that would become reggae. Along with King Tubby, he was one of the instigators of Dub. He was probably the most prolific producer of all. Perry’s style consisted of improvising his cuts on the fly, whirling like a dervish behind the mixing board, blowing ganja smoke directly onto the tape reels. He would drink tape head cleaner when he ran out of Dragon Stout. By the late 70s Perry was seeing UFOs, kicking out any dreadlocks from Black Ark, & covering the walls with deranged scatological prophecies. In 1979, during a bout of severely eccentric behavior, Perry supposedly trashed & burned his studio & may have wound up briefly in a mental institution.

Perry has given up the demon Alcohol & the Jah ganga (he’s 79 years of age) & lives in Switzerland with his wife Mireille & a couple kids.

He is still recording (two tracks here are from 2014) & performing (Lee Perry & the White Belly Rats, Lee Perry & Dub Is A Weapon, Lee Perry & Dubblestandart; Lee Perry & Subatomic Sound System).

Currently there are two feature length movies about his life & work: Volker Schaner's Vision of Paradise & The Upsetter by filmmakers Ethan Higbee & Adam Bhala Lough.

But enough about LSP. If you’re here now, you already know. I’m just rambling.
