Musick that Needed Work: T - The Tape-beatles

 

Plagiarism® is a collective vision. It is also the registered trademark (with tongue deeply in cheek) of the Tape-beatles, originally the Iowa City duo of Lloyd Dunn & John Heck. 

 

They set out to create music without using musical instruments. Their sampling was a conscious attemp at cultural & economic usage of so-called copyrighted material. They were influenced by the audio collage work of French concrete musicians, such as Pierre Henri & Pierre Schaeffer as well as a few other modernist composers like Edgard Varèse & John Cage.

Their first release was a resounding success...

Musick that Needed Work: T - Tuxedomoon

 

I found my two favorite Tuxedomoon releases gathering dust, ingnored in the heap of Musick that Needed Work. I am overjoyed to rescue these two behemoths. Half-Mute I played until I wore it out back in the day & after all these years (45+) I remember these great tunes like it was yesterday.

 

Tuxedomoon started out in San Francisco in 1977, the brainchild of two music scholars from S.F. City College, Blaine L. Reininger (keyboards & vocals) & Steven Brown (multi-instrumentalist). The group signed to the Resident's Ralph Records & released their first full-length in 1980.

After another release on Ralph the following year, the band relocated to an artist's commune in Rotterdam, Netherlands, but soon moved to Brussels, Belgium. Though they went through many line-up changes & a stop/start history, Reininger, Brown, Peter Principle, & horn player Luc van Lieshout still record together as Tuxedomoon.

Combining Tuxedomoon avant-garde electronics with Beat Generation cool, this next album is named after the book Beat Museum – Bardo Hotel by Brion Gysin (Bardo Hotel was the Beat Generation hang-out in Paris). The soundtrack is heavily influenced from Gysin & William Burroughs' "cut-up" method. The recording features samples of airplane sounds, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) announcements, & other found sounds mixed in a blender of New Orleans jazz & twisted opera...

Musick that Needed Work - T: Tobin Sprout

Still working my way through the alphabet, emptying out the Musick that Needs Work folder. Somehow three in a row have had the most needing work. R was RIDICULOUS, S even more in-SANITY, & now T. I think T stands for TERROR. Even having removed a shit ton of bands with The (The Clash, The Dammed, The Legendary Pink Dots, The Slits, etc...nothing I could do with ones like The Tape Beatles, The Tropicals, worst conundrum The The), I still won't be finished this month. I even paired it down a bit as I had some releases that where in the T section that were mis-filed (the title started with T not the group) & some that I didn't really care about (starting therefore with S for SHIT) & just deleted. Still, this is going to be a lot of work, so best just begin...

Starting off with a pair by Tobin Sprout. Last January Frenz of NSS Richie Muster requested some Tobin Sprout. I shared a few that I had on hand but told him at the time that I had a few more that were resting in the MtNW: T folder. I'll start with those. 

 

Tobin Sprout is a native of Dayton, Ohio. He became second songwriter & guitarist of the famed Dayton band Guided by Voices from 1987 to 1997 (again from 2010 to 2014). A self-taught musician, he employing a four-track recorder at his home studio which contributed greatly to the lo-fi sound of GbV. He had a busy solo career as well.

Here's one I've been wanting to share for a long time but never really got around to it. One of the formative bandss of my youthful musical mind. The Bee Gees: Robin; Maurice; & Barry combined the sublime vocal harmonies, perfect lyrical content, & unequalled pop sensibilities. This is their third full-lenght release, called creatively 1st.
