April - Came in Like a Jon, Going Out Like a Der

Got jonder coming & going this month. Both offerings are short & to the point...

The Fans was a punk band from Atlanta, Georgia. One of the many projects of prolific guitarist, vocalist, & songwriter Kevin Dunn. They released three single between 1977-1980. Thinking of friend jonder when I was listening to this (his homebase is ATL,GA).

In the Temple of Roy

The duo of Richard(s) Van Spall & Tindall of Windsor, Berkshire UK teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Mick Bund from the band Felt (hence the band moniker???) to form Templeroy in the early 90s. They only released this one full-length, the 3xLP Deaf & Dumb, in 1995.

I am sharing the Echo Beach re-issue from the EB Serious Classics series. It is much edited down. I have added numerous other tracks from the original release that I have been able to gather together over time plus two Dubometer versions.

If anyone has a copy of the original 3xLP, please share it with me, I’m begging.

It was the Best of Walter, it was the Worst of Walter

In a foreword to the book No Wave, writing about the movement's continuing influence Weasel Walter sez:
"I began to express myself musically in a way that felt true to myself, constantly pushing the limits of idiom or genre and always screaming "Fuck You!" loudly in the process. It's how I felt then and I still feel it now. The ideals behind the (anti-) movement known as No Wave were found in many other archetypes before and just as many afterwards, but for a few years around the late 1970s, the concentration of those ideals reached a cohesive, white-hot focus."

From the compilation notes: Madcap selections from WW's solo archives, spanning 1995-2010
"The Best of the Worst contains 1 hour & 36 minutes of abstract mastery, including drum solo pieces, rare compilation tracks, guitar deconstructions, abrasive brutal prog composition, deathly minimalism, machine guns & air raid sirens with Beefheartian skronk in one long, flowing stream of audio terror."

A Brief Return to the Days of Youth

I so wanted to share this one since I first heard it years ago but couldn't come up with a copy (that I could afford). I pieced it together but was missing the fourth track. This month when I was doing the Days of Youth I was determined to share this essential set. Thanks to friend jonder who shared the final track, I am able to present it in full.

Coming out at the time of Brexit, this anti-Brexit protest polemic features one of the finest post-punk supergroups in my opinion. These longstanding musicians with the eclectic mastermind of Jah Wobble collaborated on this CD single in protest of the then-current political climate.

A Very British Coup came about through the creative genius of bassist Jah Wobble, recorded with producer Youth featuring Wobble's former Public Image Ltd band mates Richard Dudanski on drums & Keith Levene on guitar together with lead vocals from Pop Group frontman Mark Stewart, additional bass / keyboards added by Youth with Charlie Wardle on Chinese harp along with loops from Andrew Weatherall / Nina Walsh. It doesn't get much better than this.

What Happened to Me? - David Thomas R.I.P.

The ultimate drunken curmudgeon, great Father Ubu, Crocus Behemoth has died.

One of my top-ten musicians, I have seen David or Ubu uncountable times, in the tiniest halls & slummiest bars to Grande Ballrooms & Theaters of Light. I should take the time to do this man justice but I am flummoxed at the moment & just need to hear (& share) some David.

This one is for us all.

It was Ten Years Ago Today

Ten years ago today I shared Ralph Lunsten’s Universe featuring the Andromeda All Stars - Universe recorded between March & October 1976. Here's one he released with the Lovetopia Feelharmonic Orchestra ten years after Universe, to stick with the decade theme.

Lundsten passed away in 2023.

note: While preparing this share, I noticed in the B/W foto of Ralph Lundsten an album cover near his left shoulder. It was so interesting looking that I had to search it out.

It is the alternate cover for Side 2 of Lundsten’s Gustav III release entitled “Nattmara (Opus #56, 1970)”. The album is subtitled Horror & Ballet Music from Ralph Lundsten. I decided to share Side 2 (the Horror side) as a bonus track (include in Dream Master share). Enjoy...

More AD

Back in April 2024 I did a deep dive into all things 4AD & the incredible Ivo Watts-Russell

One of the 4AD's earliest signings was the band Modern English. In 1983, Watts-Russell decided that the band should re-record two of its earliest songs, "Sixteen Days" & "Gathering Dust", as a medley. At that time, ME was closing its set with this medley & Ivo felt it warranted a re-do.

When the band declined the offer, Watts-Russell decided to assemble a group of musicians to record the medley themselves: Elizabeth Fraser & Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins; Gordon Sharp of Cindytalk (later known as Cindy Sharp or Cinder); Martyn Young of Colourbox; plus a few members of Modern English themselves (guitarist Gary McDowell & bassist Michael Conroy).

The 1983 Sixteen Days/Gathering Dust EP resulted from these sessions. Pleased with the EP, Watts-Russell decided to pursue the recording of a full album under the This Mortal Coil moniker, 1984s It'll End in Tears, which I included (along with Filigree & Shadow) in the 4AD shares.

Here's their third full-length, Blood which I had not shared yet. Again the album contains some wonderful but off-kilter cover songs in the typical TMC style (like their incredible take on Spirit's "Nature's Way").

Returning Once Again to 4Hero.

This release followed Parallel Universe & Jacob's Optica Stairway that I've shared in the past. This is simply a most perfect album! 4Hero are magickians of  break-ology & sampling, Here they weave a concept album from an unexpected palette of broken beats, soul, jazzy drum&bass.

The whole thing starts off with political poetess Ursula Rucker expounding the album's thesis, that Humanity is a hostile passenger aboard the sacred vessel Earth, witnessing our own harsh destiny & vessel Earth's destruction play out through a cosmic dance of Future jazz.

Stanley Keith Bowsza

When I was working on R. Stevie Moore for last month's Musick that Needed Work - R, I came across my musikal stash of Minóy. Happily (to me) much of his work has been re-issued since 2014 on his original tape label Minóy Cassetteworks or on Phil Klinger's other label, PBKsound.

Cassetteworks was the label run by Minóy himself from his home address at 923 W. 232 Street in Torrance, California from the 1980s through the early 1990s. Cassettes produced on this label were dubbed by Minóy with a copyright followed by a year & his signature or collaboration project name along the right edge of the spine of the tape. Only a few of the tapes he releases were actually branded "Minóy Cassetteworks".

Sound of Pig, out of Great Neck, New York under the management of Al Margolis was another outlet for Minóy releases enabling them to reach a larger(?) audience. Al Margolis earned the title "Cassette Godfather" with his Sound of Pig cassette label by releasing obscure tapes, distributing them through a growing DIY music underground.

Days of Youth...Day 4

But of all the Youth I encountered, this one is a Monument.

This one I didn't stumble on, I went blindly searching it out. I decided the Universe was trying to ask me something ("What else dat Yout' been up to dese days?"). So I dug up his discography & was seriously blown away by this 2xCD chunk o' greatness.

The Great Upsetter Rainford Perry died on August 29, 2021. His career spanned more than sixty glorious years. He was responsible for innumerable works of transcendental beauty & is a major founder of both reggae & Dub. The stream of consciousness that flowed from his mind & mouth is genius.

Now the words have ceased. But Youth has done the supreme tribute to those words, making a record of respect for Perry's greatness, sending him outward on a Spaceship to Mars.

Dub on, Pipecock, Dub on!

This all tied in with the Youth encounter I made in March while I was preparing shares for Music that Needed Work - R. One of the bands that needed my attention was Radical Dance Faction. While I was working on the three releases that needed work, I noticed that RDF had a new-to-me 2023 release...you guessed it...a collab...Youth meets RDF.

This Youth encounter (& Nik's saxophone antics) reminded me that January 17 I shared Pharoahs from Outer Space by Nik Turner (R.I.P.) & Youth. That led me to Interstellar Energy by Nik Turner & the Space Falcons w/Youth. The Space Falcons are a Brit space rock unit in the Hawkwind vein. Nik rips up the saxophone as only he can do. & Youth does that Youth thang.

If you enjoyed Pharoahs I think you'll enjoy this one...

Days of Youth...Day 1

Lately everywhere I turn musickally I am running into Youth.

Youth (Martin Glover, Killing Joke bassist) is highly sought after & super active as a music producer, so no surprise, I guess. Just that ole Quantum Entanglement doing that thing that QE does.

The first encounter came about when I was working on the previous TransGlobal Underground share. I mentioned Nation Records & TGU's stable mate, Invaders of the Heart. I have been listening to Invaders of the Heart's first release, Without Judgement since then. It is on my heavy rotation now.

I decided I'd see what other music Jah & friends had that I hadn't really listened to, something new that I'm always wanting to hear.

Sure enough I ran headlong into the Youth/Jah Wobble joint Acid Punk Dub Apocalypse. Even before I gave it a spin I knew I'd like it. As soon as I saw it had not only Jah & Martin, but a guest list that includes: drummer Tony Allen of Fela Kuti's Africa 70 & Egypt 80 bands; loops, beats & samples from Andrew Weatherall & Nina Walsh of the Woodleigh Research Facility plus their dear friend Alex Paterson (The Orb); Roger Eno on piano; Nik Turner on saxophone; & vocal duties by Lara Smiles, Aurora Dawn, Durga McBroom, Vivien Goldman, Rhiannon, & Hollie Cook, I was hooked.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

TransGlobal Underground is a UK based collective fusing as many different kinds of world music as its members can get their hands on. The project grew out of a mutual love for dance, avant-garde, Arabic, & world music. It draws on each member's listening tastes or cultural backgrounds. I have shared Natacha Atlas & Neil Sparkes here before, both members of TransGlobal. This is the first share of TGU here.

Transglobal Underground first appeared on the single "Temple Head" for Nation records. The label was created specifically to fuse western dance music with Arabic music, Asian music, & African music. At various times  Nation was a home to Asian Dub Foundation, Talvin Singh, Loop Guru, Nitan Sawhney, Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart, & Fun-da-Mental.

C'est la Vie de Nouveau

I have been known to do my share of megaposts around this dump where I take an extensive look at a particular artist or labels past catalogue. These deep dives are always the most visited & most heavily downloaded.

Of course the fact that there are numerous choices on these shares is one of the reasons for their popularity.

Japan, Jamaica, & Mongolia lead the way in the Musick Around the World posts while Come on Feel the Noise (Angel’N Heavy Syrup & associated bands), Absolute Equinox (Surrealism), & Any Anxiety (Little Annie Anxiety Bandez) still reel'em in, but the all time Leader of the Pack is C'est la Vie, an in-depth look at the work of the late great Woody Dumas & his C'est la Mort label.

I have often thought of doing a follow-up to that post: C'est la Mort part 2. Finally found time to do just that. On the first share I told the story of C'est la Mort & Little Woody, but it's only fitting I give a bit of history here.

Woodrow "Little Woody" Dumas came from Baker, Louisiana. He began his Dr. Death radio show on KLSU, December 1983. KLSU radio is the Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA non-commercial college alternative station transmitting at 23,000 watts with about a 50 mile radius range.

Woody's Dr. Death show was probably the first US radio broadcast of bands like the Legendary Pink Dots, Beautiful Pea Green Boat, Front Line Assembly, Eden, Heavenly Bodies, or Eleven Shadows. The radio show led to a mail order business known as Deadly Records that Dumas ran off his porch at home in Baker. The mail order eventually became the C'est la Mort label itself.

C'est la Mort was small but influential independent record label that specialized in ethereal, ambient, dream pop, & darkwave bands again run out of Woody's home in Baker from 1984 to 1994. In addition to albums released for individual acts, there were five Dr. Death compilation albums released (numbered Vol. 1 - Vol. 6, there is no Volume 2. It was intended as a compilation of cover tunes but never saw release).

Let's start out with Dr. Death Vol 5...
