Most of you who visit here know my inherent weirdness so it should come as no surprise that David Lynch was one of my favorite film makers. His version of an alternative Americana was second to none.
I also enjoyed his musickal genus & have shared his musick here before.
I was quite shaken to hear of his passing. Lynch had to evacuate his home due to the LA wildfires. He had been diagnosed with severe emphysema a few years ago & rarely left his house due to COVID-19 fears. Following the evacuation, his health quickly deteriorated. He died at his daughter's house.
I don't really have more to say at this time, so like many others, I have assembled a montage in his honor.

Well said. I can only agree, and thank you for taking the trouble to make this compilation (and for all your other brilliant work). I'll look forward to settling down to it later today.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteThanks a lot for this. It's good that we can remeber David Lynch with this wonderful compilation. I always wanted to dive deeper into his musical oeuvre, so this is probably the right moment to do so.
ReplyDeleteI listened to this as I was putting it together, then listened through from beginning to end when it was complete. Have to say this is a good introduction to some of Lynch's lesser know music (of corse I had to include some more well-known soundtrack cuts). Hope you enjoy.
DeleteA fitting tribute to the man and his work. If there is a heaven, hopefully everything is fine.
ReplyDeleteYour comment is the most on-point I've read anywhere. Thanks, Jonder.
DeleteHey NØ,
ReplyDeleteAs I was quite shaken to hear of Lynch's passing as well, I thought here would be the special place I was looking for to thank you for this blog, which is amazing... I've come here looking for "recent" sound-system culture (the soundsystember series) to download, but have found much more, and discovered we shared quite a few common tastes...
As a teenager, the walls of my room were covered with photocopies of the iconic photo of Henry in Eraserhead, just to give you an idea of how important David Lynch was-is for me, I followed him with renewed fascination all the way to Twin Peaks - the Return, which looked like it was the end already... A powerful end...
The discovery of Eraserhead was 1987-88... I wrote to Ka-spel at that point to ask him what bands he would recommend. He kindly answered a serious list and I stayed with Can, Faust, Nurse with Wound among others (Deep Freeze Mice as well, but the other ones I've listened to heavily all my life). I bought quite a few records until 1998, where I stopped altogether. I saw The Dots many times, once with Ryan Moore opening with Twilight Circus, and again a few weeks from now...
I love Roots Reggae and Dub (fell into that through Lee Scratch Perry, the great Upsetter!).
I also love The Ex and Dog faced Hermans, plus many punk-post-rock-weird bands (The Residents until the Mark of the Mole trilogy). I haven't seen Prolapse on your blog yet (but Blurt yes!). Also experimental, industrial, weird stuff. And more... I am currently exploring the Glasgow scene (got everything you posted I guess, excellent!)
I'll stop here, just wanted to emphasize we had a lot in common when it comes to music it seems...
Keep on the good work
Best regards
Rico
Before I go further, the reason your comment(s) didn't appear is because I have moderation set ON. That way I can weed out the spam or any racist/sexist/violent comment.
DeleteNow, thank you so much for this tremendous comment. Indeed our respect for David Lynch & our tastes in music follow a similar trail. I have no idea why I have not shared any Prolapse here, I guess just a (pro)lapse in my poor memory. Pointless Walks is an all-time favorite from days gone by. I will certainly add them to my "Things to Get Arounf to" folder & try to remedy the situation.
Thank you for following along, digging in to past shares. If you ever want anything that you might be looking for shared here, it never hurts to shoot me a request. Of course I don't always have, but since as you said "we had a lot in common when it comes to music" I just might. Thanks again, Rico & stay in touch if you would. It helps me determine the direction of this mess.
Caught Eraserhead whilst out of my mind on percocet after having my wisdom teeth out, sprawled out on the couch not knowing how much of the movie I was really seeing vs. how much of the movie I was imagining as I drifted in and out of consciousness. The next year, Blue Velvet came out and I knew I'd found another companion to bring along for the ride. Spent an evening with the love of my life in a car outside a diner in Seattle, unable to get out and go inside because we were too busy dissecting/processing/digesting the movie we'd just seen: Lost Highway. A few years later, the same damned thing happened in Los Angeles after seeing Mulholland Dr.
ReplyDeleteLynch was a constant guide for me through this mess we call life in these here united states. A reminder to be steadfast in service to one's own personal vision, no matter how askew that might seem to others or how wildly against the grain you may be cutting. To tend the seeds of your ideas and see what interesting vines grow out of them. To stand staring in wide-eyed, slack-jawed wonder at the mundane every now and then. To give yourself a present once a day, every day, no matter how small. To hear the music in the grinding gears of the universe working away. To dream.

Thank you kind sir for the rollicking recollections & inspired insights.
Delete"to dream" resumes Lynchian spirit. Very well put, dear Sir. We'll miss him for sure.

Great post, thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Art.

Thank you so much for this. This sounds like the perfect antidote for the other events taking place on Monday. I'm joining in for sure. Hoping it does some wonderous goodness.
DeleteThanks a lot NØ! I listened to his latest output with Chrystabell this morning while struggling with an Ikea piece of furniture : quite a Lynchian situation in a way...
ReplyDeleteWith David Lynch passing, and BOB coming back to business as the head of the US tomorrow, that's quite a sad and frightening beginning of the year. I will surely need some meditation /medication soon!
"Back Seat" from Somewhere in the Nowhere is one of my top-ten Lynch tunes (with Chrysta Bell). Ikea is always a "Lynchian situation" for me for sure.
DeleteWith the swearing in tomorrow of that interdimensional entity who feeds on pain & sorrow, we all need meditation/medication. I'm joining in with his family's world-wide meditation session tomorrow noon (PST) & I'll definetly be mightily medicated.
Thanks for the comment (not so) Invisible One.
Thanks for this primer on his musical work. RIP
ReplyDelete"I figured one day I'd just wake up and and find out what the hell yesterday was all about. I'm not too keen on thinkin' about tomorrow. And today's slipping by."
ReplyDeleteThanks for this comp NØ. It sure as hell fits my mood today.
"I'll show you light now. It burns bright forever. No more blue tomorrows. You on high now, love."
