In January I shared a final installment of Cop Shoot Cop. I suggested that on Release, CSC were channelling their inner Thirlwell.
Richie Muster commented:
"You mention Foetus/Thirlwell; you haven't by any chance anything lurking down the back of your sofa, have you? I have bits and pieces, but not much."
JG Thirlwell is a composer/producer/performer born in Melbourne, Australia. He moved to London in 1978, then relocated to NYC in 1983, where he has been based ever since.
Thirlwell seems fond of using various nom de musique for his musickal output. In recent years he has released many of his works under his own name. He first began releasing under the Foetus variants, of which there are at least eight, starting with Foetus Under Glass, then moving toYou’ve Got Foetus on Your Breath, Scraping Foetus off the Wheel, Foetus Interruptus, Foetus Corruptus, with more variations until simply Foetus.
He also records & performs under many pseudonyms including Manorexia, Xordox, Steroid Maximus, Baby Zizanie, Hydroze Plus, Clint Ruin, & Wiseblood.
I was at a complete loss as to how I could do a good cross section of such craziness. Then I remembered a great idea that I shared in October 2024 called Pitch Black - First of All. I made a compilation of the first song from all of Pitch Black's releases. It was one of my favorites that I have compiled over the years. This would be a perfect way to showcase this vast expanse of Foetus. Then I had an even better idea...two volumes, one of Foetus & one of JG Thirwell releases & all his other variously named projects.
I have listed the iteration of Thirlwell et. al & the source album for each track. If anyone is interested in any individual releases, you can let me know in the comments.

Cor, lumme, you really are the chap to go to for all the goodies! Thanks very much, NØ. I'm tempted to say, 'throw everything you have at me', but i won't be greedy. I'll see what i already have (not much) then pluck a few choice albums from the above. Once again, thank you.
ReplyDeleteYour welcome, RM. I'll be waiting to see which ones you decide upon.
DeleteThanks a lot, Nate! Already made a couple of half-hearted attempts over the years to get into JT's oeuvre, but never quite succeeded. Going to try again, now.
ReplyDeleteI'll just say this might be weird, even for you lol.
DeleteThis sounds promising, indeed. I'm away for a few days, but will let you know what I think of JGT when I get back.
DeleteThank you for this. Have been a fan since the early days and had the honour of meeting JG many years ago when he played Glasgow. Nice person
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment & anecdote.
DeleteThank you for this. Foetus/JG is an artist I have always meant to check out more. I was originally put off when a friend described them as "Swing music for Nurse With Wound Fans." That kept me away for many years. Your two comps look excellent and I'm excited to give 'em another go.
ReplyDeleteWith Foetus, the thing is where to begin that might be something one might like. Hope these samplings at least point to style/era that might intrigue.
DeleteHello! Is it possible for you to find Seaweed Goorillas - Seaweed Goorillas from 1993?
ReplyDeleteChristian, good to hear from you again.
ReplyDeleteHere you go:

Hey man, great to hear from you again! Hope you're doing well. By the way, I have some requests that you might like to hear.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this - I associate Foetus with John Peel, he used to play them a lot from what I remember. I've never really checked them out, so this is a great place to start
ReplyDeleteFoetus was tres popular with John Peel, doing at least fifty spots. Hope you find something you'll like here.
DeleteHi, NØ. A quick check reveals that my Foetus collection is a lot more anorexic than i'd first thought. Any chance you could post, say, 'Deaf 1981 - You've Got Foetus on Your Breath', 'Ache 1982 - You've Got Foetus on Your Breath' & 'Nail 1985 - Scraping Foetus off the Wheel'? That'd be an excellent place to start, unless you have other recommendations. Cheers mate.

Nicely indeed. Cheers mate.
DeleteAgain, thanks a lot, Nate, for these excellent compilations, which have definitely whet my appetite for more. At the moment, I find the more recent stuff most attractive, but that could change once I dive deeper into the Thirlwell. If you could post any of the following, I'd be happy:
ReplyDeleteRadiolarian Ooze 2002 - Manorexia
Thalassaphobia 12" 2003 - Baby Zizanie
Mesopelagic Waters 2010 - Manorexia

Thank you very much, Nate! This is brilliant. You've really managed to turn me into a Thirlwell fan. I tried a couple of times to get into his work, but I think I listened to the wrong tracks at the wrong time. Your compilations are indeed the perfect introduction to this massive body of work. Now, I enjoy this music so much that I wonder why it didn't click before.
