Sorry to all for being such a downer. I'm going to try to forge ahead. Maybe activity will break the lethargy of depression. I'll get back to Musick that Needed Work - Q after this one. It seemed what I wanted to post on returning.
The Thugs are Nicola Giunta - guitar, bass, organ, drum mahine, tape, vocals & Edoardo Guariento - drum. The twelve tracks were recorded almost exclusively with vintage instruments & delve into the roots sound of the mid to late 70s. They have that expansive, profound attitude, that sense of constant invention that characterized the work of Lee Scratch Perry. At the same time the tracks have this psychedelic centrifugal force that is either explicit or more often hidden in the details.
Thugs or Thuggees is the name of a historical brotherhood of religious murderers & muggers. Estimates of the number of their victims vary between 50.000 to over a million. The Brotherhood experienced its heyday in pre-colonial India. It was destroyed by the British colonial power at the beginning of the 19th century. Giunta liked the image of this forbidden sect meeting in subterranean sanctuaries performing mysterious rituals for their goddess Kali (goddess of death). Every track is about the Thuggees activities in one way or another.

Good to see you're back, Nate. But do take care!
ReplyDeleteTaking my care from family & friends like yourself. Thank you.
DeleteCheers mate.
ReplyDeleteThank you, my friend. Cheers to you as well.
DeleteThis is a great album, and wonderful to see you back sharing some light in these otherwise dark times. I'm trying my best to stay positive; be the change... right?
ReplyDeleteJust today talked with my family about just creating a sphere of positivity around ourselves & radiating outward to those we touch. I don't know what change we can make, that day came & went as shit, but we can protect our own loved ones. & never collaborate with the enemy.
DeleteHand in hand, we can walk out of the darkness together. I'm not saying it won't be a hellish journey, but it's connections and community (whether close at hand or at a distance) that make the passage lighter. Keep sharing, keep talking, keep your loved ones safe, and keep connecting. Much hope and peace to you.
DeleteWell said. I've been trying my best to stave off the darkness and negativity with music and good friends. Also a few solo days of mindfulness in the forest is helpful.

Thanks Rob. Many are availing themselves to all you share. You are helping things very much.
DeleteGood to see you back and keeping up the good fight remember many of us over on the other side of the Atlantic are just as concerned and worried and have been standing up to the Trump- a-likes over here and our thoughts and hopes are with you.
ReplyDeleteWe here are directly under the gun, but the rest of the world should well be worried. You all will need be our saviours this time around.
DeleteThanks for this, and thanks to Rob for the Muslimgauze contributions. This blog got me to go back and dive deep into Bryn Jones' work (I think the last time I listened to them was, like, '96??? What was I THINKING???) and I'm forever indebted to y'all's efforts. Time to put the Thugs to the test and soak in a tub whilst listening to some dub.
ReplyDeleteHope your Thug tub time serves you well. Sounds like a winning formula to a better moment. Thanks Aleck.
ReplyDeleteThanks NØ! Another gem from your Aladdin's cave of musical treasures! Hey, if I've already thanked you for this please just enjoy my post and delete it. My brain is mush, and I don't remember if I've already posted about this.
