Well, today looks like Dennis Day...well, not like Dennis Day...like Dennis day
...nevermind.

We've got Dubly Beloved Dennis 'Blackbeard' Bovell & Newcomer to NSS Dennis Brown.

Dennis Brown was a powerhouse voice in Jamaican music. He died July 1, 1999 from cardiac arrest due to a collapsed lung as the result of a bout of pneumonia.

In April 2010, Brown was featured on NPR Morning Edition news program as one of the "50 great voices – The stories of awe-inspiring voices from around the world and across time". The NPR "50 Great Voices" list includes Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson and Jackie Wilson among others. Some fine company for Mr. Brown.

Here's reggae great Dennis Brown being Dubbed by Niney the Observer. I've included the original track titles in (---) after the Dub titles.

Dubly Beloved Dennis Bovell is originally from Barbados. He is a world renowned guitarist, bass player, & record producer now based in England.

Bovell has worked on so many musical projects over the years that a complete list would just be too long print here. Beyond the sheer numbers, the range of collaborations is what would make such a list stand out. He has produced solo material under his own name & as Blackbeard. He was a key member of Matumbi & LKJ's Dub Band. He has worked with the likes of the Pop Group, the Slits, Orange Juice, Fela Kuti, Bananarama, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Marvin Gaye, the Boomtown Rats, Edwin Collins, Dexy's Midnight Runners, on & on.

Bovell was a key figure in the early days of the Lovers Rock genre, most notably with the hit song "Silly Games" by Janet Kay.

Janet Kay is a British reggae singer, born in London, who was only 21 years old when her single "Silly Games" rocketed to No. 2 on the UK chart in the summer of 1979. It is one of Britain's biggest ever reggae hits & a splendid example of Lovers Rock. She worked with Bovell on the 1982 album Capricorn Woman.

Sounds - sweet as Sugar - Lincoln Barrington Minott

Lincoln 'Sugar' Minott was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 25, 1956. He began his career in the sound systems while still a child, working as a selector for the Sound of Silence Keystone outfit, before launching his own Gathering of Youth Sound System just as he hit his teens.

In 1969 Minott teamed up with Tony Tuff & Derrick Howard. Together they formed the group the African Brothers.

In 1974 Sugar teamed up with ace producer Coxsone Dodd at Studio One. After the loss of John Holt, Ken Boothe, & Alton Ellis to other studios, Sugar helped breath new life into Studio One. His first hit for Studio One was "Vanity" followed quickly by "Mr DC", "House is not a Home" & "Hang on Natty", which led to his first solo album Live Loving.

In 1979 Sugar left Studio One to form his own label, Black Roots Music. He created theYouth Promotion Possie, recording artists like Little John, Triston Palmer, Barry Brown, &Tony Tuff.

Sugar died on July 10, 2010 in St. Andrew Parish, Jamaica of heart disease.

The clue to this first one is in the title.

Ten tracks that use the familiar sound of the 303 acid bassline but place it within the less familiar context of Dub. The psychedelic nature of the acid squiggle finds a fine musical partner in Dub's deep meditative echo chamber to create a highly hypnotic & trippy journey.

The tracks here were all recorded during lockdown in Om Unit's home town of Bristol (the cobblestones of which feature on the cover) which no doubt played a role in their deeply immersive nature.

Today's offerings are Dubly Beloved Scientist & Newcomer to NSS Delroy Witter.

Everybody surely knows Scientist around here. He is my preminent choice as heir to King Tubby's throne. He burst onto the scene in the mid 70s with a reckless mixing style pushing even the boundaries expanded by King Tubby's wild extravaganzas. Born Hopeton Overton Brown, he began his career as an engineer at Studio One, then soon after at Tubby's in the late 70s as the protégé of one Osbourne Ruddock aka King Tubby.

These two offerings have Scientist teaming up with Dubiterian, who is Marc Richard Brehmer of Germany, a Dub producer & melodica specialist as well as owner of Dubiterian Records.

The inclusion of Dub Judah in yesterday's Dubkasm release prompted these next three great sets...

Black Roots sprang up from the St Paul's area of Bristol, UK. The original eight-member band formed in 1979. The group was made up of Delroy O'Gilvie, Cordell Francis, Errol Brown, Jabulani Ngozi, Trevor Seivwright, Kondwani Ngozi, Derrick King, & Carlton 'Roots' Smith.

They quickly gained a large following by touring almost non-stop around the country, playing their brand of  'militant pacifism' roots reggae.

They mixed a good amount of Dub on their reggae releases (Ina Different Style is a perfect example) but these three are strictly Dub, mixed by Dub Judah & Mad Professor, spanning Black Roots stellar career to this point. They released these between 1991-1995. After a seventeen year hiatus, they began releasing new material in 2012. They have released six albums since re-grouping.
