On any post, if the link is no longer good, leave a comment if you want the music re-uploaded. As long as I still have the file, or the record, cd, or cassette to re-rip, I will gladly accommodate in a timely manner all such requests.

Musick that Needed Work - R: Roy Montgomery

Finally made it through the R folder. More than I Remembered. & they just get deeper for the next two: S & T. Might hold off for a few, even though I'm trying to get through to Z.

This is a recent addition to the Musick that Needed Work folder. I'm glad it hasn't taken ten years to fix this one. This is some fine music here. I'm glad I worked on this one. It is one of my very favorites.

Roy Montgomery is a composer, singer, guitarist, & lecturer from Christchurch, New Zealand. He is one of the most significant musicians of the 1990s New Zealand music scene. Montgomery's mostly instrumental solo works have elements of post-rock, lo-fi, folk & avant-garde experimentation. His signature sound might be described as atmospheric or cinematic, often featuring complex layers of chiming, echoing &/or droning guitar phrases. He created a successful hybrid of all these styles with his ensembles Dadamah, Dissolve, & Hash Jar Tempo.

In 2021 the still very active Montgomery released four albums: Island of Lost Souls that contains the 22-minute "The Electric Children of Hildegard Von Bingen"; That Best Forgotten Work, presumably a collection of leftovers & rarities; Rhymes of Chance which collects instrumentals, songs performed by him as well as songs performed by Emma Johnston: & Audiotherapy, a collection of leftovers & rarities ranging from the spoken-word piece "Occlusione" to the instrumental "Audiomemory".

  2. As ever, thanks a lot, Nate! After you mentioned his music to me some time ago, I was hoping that the R section would feature Roy Montgomery. The only problem is that (thanks to you) I already have the truly excellent Island of Lost Souls album. Haven't got much by Roy Montgomery, haven't got any of the other 2021 albums you mention ...

  3. Got to give this a listen as I very much like the music of Hildegard Von Bingen, a name I never expected to see here! Many thanks!

Cheers, NØ. This sounds like it'll be right up my street, as we say round these parts. Sure, short songs are the lifeblood of rock, a dazzling, energising shower to perk up the day, but there's something to be said for a good, long soak in a relaxing bath of cinematic, atmospheric, experimental drone.
