I just woke up from a dream in which I was a wild animal. For a good minute after I was back from the land of Nod I still knew I was a wild creature, running free in the night. I was a huge black dog.

Basement Beehive: The Girl Group Underground is a two-disc set showcasing 56 songs recorded all across America during the pre-psychedelic 60s.  Rather than the usual novelty heavy offerings of many girl group releases, the content here delivers strong songs sung by powerful voices.  The result is an impressive slice that covers the breadth of the girl group sound, a very strong compilation that stacks as high as a beehive bouffant.

Now the Mask is Off

Covering basically the same time frame (1977-81),

same bands (X,  The Weirdos,  Germs,  The Randoms,  The Bags,  The Eyes,  Black Randy & the Metrosquad)

& same songs as the Live from The Masque release that I recently featured, these are studio versions with a slightly (it's punk, after all) more polished, less raw sound.

Great companion piece to any who enjoyed the previous mentioned offering with enough additional music (The Hollywood Square,  The Zeros,  T.S.O.L.,  The Dils,  Adolescents,  The Urinals, & more) to make it well worth while.

This Tree is Free, but Noisy

Thor's Rubber Hammer was a record label originally based out of Athens, Georgia that moved its base of operation to Washington, D.C.. It existed from 2006 - 2011. Suprisingly, for a time Athens had a noise scene that not only spawned this label but was able to score an entire compilation.

Deeded to Itself: Athens Southernoise is a compilation put together by Thor's Rubber Hammer label boss Lars Gotrich. Here's what Lars has to say:
''Right about the time I was thinking of moving to Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2006, I couldn't help but notice a small noise scene coalescing around Athens, Georgia. It didn't sound like the harsh-wall histrionics coming out of Michigan or the No Fun set of NYC. The sonics were slower and muggier, weighed down by humid summers and the drawl of Southern life

The CD was released at a big show in February 2007 that I booked at the DIY space Secret Squirrel in Athens. We had two stages set up for a continuous assault on the ears, and went until 3 in the morning. With the exception of Killick, none of these artists exist anymore, but for a little while there, Athens had a Southernoise all it own.''

The title of the release, ''Deeded to Itself'' is a reference to a white oak tree that owns itself located near downtown Athens. In 1832, Colonel William H. Jackson's will deeded the tree possession of itself & all the land within eight feet of its trunk. The original giant oak, estimated around 400 years old, fell over during a wind storm on October 9, 1942. Not wanting the tradition to die, members of the Junior Ladies Garden Club of Athens were determined to replace the Tree. Garden Club members gathered acorns from the site & lovingly began growing a second-generation white oak to replace Colonel Jackson's beloved tree. In just four short years, on December 4, 1946, Junior Ladies members planted the sapling that stands tall today as the Tree That Owns Itself.

We interrupt these Various productions for this announcement...

Had this in the works for next month's "Fems of February" but with the passing of this grand dame, thought I'd bump it up to today.

Veronica 'Ronnie Spector' Bennett...we'll miss you, lady.

The Ronettes were an American girl group from Spanish Harlem, New York. The group consisted of lead singer Veronica Bennett (later known as Ronnie Spector), her older sister Estelle Bennett, & their cousin Nedra Talley. They had sung together since they were teenagers, then known as "The Darling Sisters". Signed first by Colpix Records in 1961, they moved to Phil Spector's Philles Records in March 1963. At that time they changed their name to "The Ronettes".

Phil Spector had crafted his role as a record producer (& pop song scribe) into something iconic & cinematic, building his treasured Wall of Sound aesthetic brick by brick, with wind-swept orchestration, booming steady rhythms, luxuriously multi-layered vocals, & soulful, operatic melodies as his building blocks.

He was the craftsman behind a vast range of tunes: "He's a Rebel" by The Crystals; "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" - The Righteous Brothers; "River Deep-Mountain High" - Ike & Tina Turner; "Let it Be" - The Beatles; "All Things Must Pass" - George Harrison; "Instant Karma" - Plastic Ono Band; "Death of a Ladies Man" - Leonard Cohen; "End of the Century" - The Ramones...this shows the range of his abilities but barely touches his prolific output.

But "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes, featuring the tight choir of these NYC street angels on the Spector-produced song co-written with Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich put the sensual, savvy voice of Ronnie Bennett in the forefront, pushing it beyond the boundaries of the song's complex layers of orchestration. With that song, Ronnie became Philles Records first true "star" greater than Phil himself.

The Ronettes placed nine songs on the Billboard Hot 100, five of which became Top 40 hits. Among their most famous songs are "Be My Baby", "Baby, I Love You", "(The Best Part of) Breakin' Up", and "Walking in the Rain". In 1964, the group released their only studio album, Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica. That year, the Rolling Stones were their opening act when they toured the UK. The Ronettes opened for the Beatles on their 1966 US tour, becoming the only girl group to tour with them.

In da House

"It was summer 1986 and clubs in London are rocking to the sounds of east coast hip hop and Washington Go Go. Meanwhile, dancefloors ´North of Watford´ (especially in Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester) are crammed with people jacking to a new sound from Chicago called "house", and for two years a north/south divide of a different kind was established.

Summer 1988 reads very differently with the whole nation rapidly becoming one jacking zone. Clubs are now overflowing with people trance dancing to a form of music that they once ignored. Dj's who once dismissed house music as hi-energy are now exclusively playing house and a whole new culture is born.

But what of the north? The jacking continues more fervently than ever, the smileys and ecstasy are evident but its not just acid that's being played but all forms of house. And at the centre of it all is Manchester's Haçienda. For almost three years Friday's Nude Night has been packed, and this album is a direct result of this Friday madness."

Switching things up...early L.A. punk recorded live at The Masque, a small punk rock club in central Hollywood, California which existed from 1977 to 1978. It was located at 1655 North Cherokee Avenue, between Hollywood Boulevard & Selma Avenue. It is fondly remembered by those who hung out there as the nexus of the Los Angeles punk subculture.

The London Calling radio shows that Joe Strummer taped for the BBC got me heavy into Various Artist releases.

I realized that I've posted up numerous in the past but still have loads more.

So for January I'm going with the topic of "Various Artist". Decided that I start the whole shebang with some Dub I haven't got around to yet.
