On any post, if the link is no longer good, leave a comment if you want the music re-uploaded. As long as I still have the file, or the record, cd, or cassette to re-rip, I will gladly accommodate in a timely manner all such requests.

Let's Do the Time Warp Again

This release is the result of Island Records finally reissuing Sly & Robbie's long out-of-print Raiders of the Lost Dub. To celebrate the occassion in the proper manner, they added another album's worth of "New School" Dub from the likes of Mad Professor, Jah Shaka, Dub Syndicate, Alpha & Omega.

The old school Dub such as Sly & Robbie's dubbed-up versions of Balck Uhuru & the Viceroys riddims seem equally matched to material such as Alpha & Omega's "One Prayer" & "Rastafari" or Dub Syndicate's "What Happened?".  It is a masterful juxtaposition between old-school rhythms & new-school technology. This is a listener's handbook on the essential of Dub old & new.

Let’s Just Go Dutch

Dutch was a short-lived trip-hop duo from USA featuring Kevin Baldwin & Liz Fullerton harkening back to the halcyon days of Portishead, Massive Attack, Hooverphonic, or the dizzy mixes of Kruder & Dorfmeister. Expertly produced & arranged, the voice of Liz is haunting, eerie, yet honest.

Kevin may be familiar to some as Jedi Mind Trick's producer DJ Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind. While Jedi Mind Trick's music is perfect for blasting in your car, Dutch is music for lazy Sunday afternoons. DJ Stoupe has been collaborating with Liz since 2007, when Fullerton lent backing vocals to "Razorblade Salvation" on JMT's Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell album.

That led to this project between producer & singer called Dutch. Their debut LP, A Bright Cold Day blends swooning pop with a darker mix of trip-hop. Stoupe shows the same flair for production that he does on JMT's records, with crackly audio samples & seductive beats but here he uses strings & horns to form something more intimately romantic.Although he takes plenty of opportunities to shine, the work largely provides a framework for Liz Fullerton's silky voice.

MF'n M

If you listen to Ambient to any extent, you might be aware of the Music From Memory label. They have been turning out excellent product since their inception. To celebrate their 50th release, they began the Virtual Dreams series of compilations with Virtual Dreams: Ambient Explorations In The House & Techno Age, 1993-1997.

This is the perfect entrance to their releases. The selections, the mastering, & the presentation are all on-point.

Virtual Dreams delves into music produced during the 1990s that redefined the boundaries of 'Ambient'. This is music created mainly by House & Techno producers, created for clubbers, but for a world beyond dance floors. House & Techno exposed millions of late 80s young people to the life-changing ups of a new world. However, with the ups of course came the downs. This ushered in the concept of a 'Chill-out' room. Early Chill-out rooms were usually sound-tracked by music such as reggae & soul. Then creative young Techno & House producers began developing a futuristic 'Ambient' sound for a world beyond the thud of the main room.

Unlike Brian Eno's Music for Airports, for example, Ambient in this new age had much sharper teeth. The soundscapes steered away from the pastoral & often portrayed outer-space & technology as opening up transformative new dimensions, exploring psychedelic, mind-altering, & transcendental possibilities of music. These were the Virtual Dreams of a new world.

Thirsting for Blood

One year ago today I featured Wendy O Williams & the Plasmatics.

In a comment, Neil Dawson sez: "Will you ever do an entry on the Bloodthirsty Butchers?"

In response, I sez: "Neil, I will add the Bloodthirsty Butchers to my to-do list. Just to let you know, that list is hella long but I do try to get to everything eventually (however long that should be)."

I also added that I don't know all that much about Japanese bands.

Bloodthirsty Butchers are a indie / punk band from Sapporo, Japan. They formed in 1986. Although well known in Japan, they are much less known in the West.

I first heard them on the Periscope compilation from Pat Maley of Olympia, WA Yoyo Studios. I posted Periscope here.

They started off Side B of that album with "I Hate You". They had a song "Lost in Time" on the following Yoyo a Go Go comp.

Bloodthirsty Butchers was: Hideki Yoshimura - vocals & guitar; Hisako Tabuchi (ex-Number Girl) - additional guitar from 2003; Takeshi Imoriya - bass; & Masahiro Komatsu - drums.

Hideki Yoshimura died of acute cardiac failure May 27, 2013 & that was the end of the Butchers.

The band's earliest sound is free-form punk based around loose jams through long, meandering songs with shouted vocals. 1996s release Kocorono (their fourth) largely redefined the Butchers' sound into more conventional alternative rock with a more introspective style with wandering guitar & melodic bass. 2003s Kouya ni Okeru found the Bloodthirsty Butchers further evolving their sound with shorter, more accessible songs that had a brighter mood than much of their previous material. With the addition of Hisako Tabuchi, the band further evolved towards tighter song structures on Banging the Drum & Guitarist wo Korosanaide.

Let's start with their first demo cassette.

Aaaah! Single Again

I was looking through some older music & came across The Jesus & Mary Chain - 21 Singles. I thought I had more than that so I went searching. I was surprised at the outcome. I guess I had collected everything but the Live At The Fox Theatre In Detroit 3-song single that was available only at the opening of Third Man Records London on September 25th 2021. Other than that, I think I counted 31 singles over the course, which are presented here in four parts...89 tracks in all (note:if the same version of a certain song was on more than one single, I only used it once).

Here, for the one & only time, The Jesus & Mary Chain...

San Liya

Ilya is a Bristol, UK based duo, composed of singer Joanna Swan & songwriter-guitarist Nick Pullin. On their debut album They Died from Beauty, Swan & Pullin team up with producer/bassist Dan Brown. They gently kneads dramatic John Barry strings with sun kissed acoustics, crisp flattened beats, & smoky aromatic vocals to touch the heart. It's distinctive jazzy, Mediterranean feel is a sonic ray of warmth. Joanna Swan's voice seems captured from the 50s & caged in an entirely modern surrounding without the slightest glitch. A torch-singer from a golden era wrapped in the titanium truths of today & tomorrow.

Although a really fine freshman release that garnered wide critical acclaim, album sales were not great enough for Virgin to continue on with another outing. Perhaps the debut they released made promises they couldn't quite keep, but their second, Somerset, fulfills their prophecies & more, meeting their most far-fetched expectations, thrillingly going even further. Somerset is a devastatingly beautiful album

You Can Drive My Car

The year was 1981.

The first itteration of Mutant Disco was released in the Netherlands on Ariola Benelux label. It contained 6 tracks: Coati Mundi -  ''Pasa / Me No Pop I''; Gichy Dan - ''Cowboys & Gangsters''; Don Armando's Second Avenue Rhumba Band - ''Deputy of Love''; Kid Creole & the Coconuts - ''Maladie D'Amour''; Material - ''Bustin' Out'' (featuring Nona Hendryx); & Was (Not Was) - ''Out Come The Freaks''.

It was released in Germany on Ze Records & Island in the same format.

Island released it on a single sided cassette in the UK but replaced the Was (Not Was) track with another of their songs, ''Wheel Me Out''.

Ze Records & Island decided to release a 3x12'' box set in the UK with the new track.

Fast forward to 2003 & skip across the Channel to France. Ze Records releases this version. Now the original 6 (several remixed), the additional ''Wheel Me Out'' remixed, & now, as if by (disco)magic...16 more tracks???

Repair Job

Fifteen years ago I posted up Jerry Teel & cohorts in a sprawling post that, including links in comments, covered a great deal of Honeymoon Killers output.  Yesterday I spotted a folder labeled "closed for repairs". Along with 1000 Mexicans' Dance like Ammunition & The Last Pop Song, Brasil & the Gallowbrothers' Wander 'til Spring & In the Rain in the Noise, was Honeymoon Killers - Love American Style & Take It Off!.

Still as vital as last I featured them, still as vital as the day they laid it down. This is rock, American style. Let's take off.

On these two, Honeymoon Killers is: Jerry Teel - guitar, harmonica, & vocals; Lisa Wells - bass & vocals; & Sally Edroso - drums & vocals.

Prompted by Other Blogs, Part 9

I'm always cruising around the interweb, looking for interesting music. I'll see or hear something out there that sets me on a path.

Sometimes I search high & low for something new that grabs my ear. Then sometimes I get lucky. Here's another prompt, the first of its kind...a two-fer.

First, friend jonder over at Jonderblog posted a Pere Ubu/David Thomas/Rocket from the Tombs sampler 2002 - 2020 & word of a new Pere Ubu release Trouble on Big Beat Street coming in May 2023.

Then over at The Good Old Major's Hole, SteveShark featured Gypsy Blood, the second Doll by Doll release from Jackie Leven & crew.

Here's something you might enjoy that hits both nails on the head...

My Spanish Dad
Exit Wound
The Sexual Loneliness of Jesus Christ
Hidden World of She
Billy ate My Pocket
Rainy Day Bergen Woman
Friendship Between Men & Women
Stopped by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Washing ny Hand
Wrapped up in Blue

Then to make this more incestuous, jonder commented at The Good Old Major's Hole: "He (Jackie Leven) collaborated with David Thomas of Pere Ubu" as Ubudoll (live at L' Hotel du Nord, Paris May 17 & 18, 1999.

Leven & Thomas met on the south coast of England in 1996, recognizing a musical kinship. They are road-travellers, collectors of funny, tragic, dangerous, often true, always real, human tales. They are natural born storytellers, equally at ease with either song or spoken word. They recognized each other as soul mates, yet they are each loners, uncompromising, dedicated to unique vision. It is this magnetic tension of opposition & attraction that makes for such a compelling performance.

Have a go at this...

I'm always cruising around the interweb, looking for interesting music. I'll see or hear something out there that sets me on a path.

The other day I was checking out the latest from Bleak Bliss.

Badgerstump has posted much Sun City Girls & related items over the years. Recently he posted Horse Cock Phepner. Even more recently the rare, scarce & saught-after SCG self-titled.

Being a SCG fanman, I have shared Sun City Girls & related items here as well: Kaliflower; The Girls of Sun City comp; Alvarius B

Bleak Bliss's recent posts made me think of one of my favorite SCG's album, Midnight Cowboys from Ipanema. That was the first thing from the Girls that I posted around here...May 2008.

It's an insane combination of short snippets of avant-poetry & cover songs.  "Love Train".  "Radar Love".  "Me & Mrs. Jones".  The cover sez: THE HIT SOUND THAT MADE THESE GREAT SONGS GREAT!  It's kinda SCG's Third Reich 'n' Roll

The original posting was hosted on Megaupload, Kim DotCom's Big Brother kidnapped cloud. I am remedying the fact it is no longer available there by presenting a new rip & link. If you want to read what I said at the time, go here.

Let the Madness Commence

Creeping Pink is a 'tape glam' project by multi-instrumentalist Landon Caldwell.

Along with Mark Tester on guitar & Amy Crouch on drums, Landon played bass in the now defunct Indiana bred/California based garage-psych band Burnt Ones.

For the last decade he has released warped, psychedelic pop under the ever-evolving Creeping Pink moniker. Originally based in Indianapolis, Caldwell began recording damaged electronic psych-rock under the name Bad Magick, quickly changing the project name to Creeping Pink. Caldwell relocated to San Francisco, then eventually Los Angeles, releasing numerous tapes & digital releases along the way. He would occasionally play live as Creeping Pink Machine with members of Burnt Ones & POW!

The release here is a 2013 Record Day exclusive on cassette, not available on CP's bandcamp page. Let's get creepy.

Tying up Some Loose Ends...Stretch Your Head

At the end of January I posted an outline of my plans for February. I mentioned one of my rejected ideas was Glasgow noise. I mentioned a variety of bands I had been considering.

Uniboehmer left the following comment:
“i'd love to hear anything you've got from the Stretchheads or Dog Faced Hermans. But as always, share as you like. And thank you.”
(One of the most polite requests I've ever received.)

So Uniboehmer, these are for you (& of course anyone interested).

Stretchheads was an experimental noise/punk band from Scotland active in the late 80s/early 90s. They went through numerous line-up changes. I believe P6 (Paul Eaglesham), the vocalist, was the only continuous fixture.

Two LPs, a 10", & two singles...Here goes.
