Che is the Narcotic

This has been a winding way. I was listening to a heavy streak of Fats Comet. I thought I remembered some song Fats Comet had done, a different more cut-up version of what became "Heaven on Earth" on Keith LeBlanc's Major Malfunction album. It turned out to be "Be My Powerstation" which had been released as a 12" single in 1983 by St. Che & later on the 1989 full-length release Narcotic by Che.

Che turned out to be Alex Johnson aka Alix Plain. Alix was a founding member of Modern Eon, a new wavish post-punk band that was part of the "New Liverpool Scene" that sprang up in 1979-1980 around Eric's Club (in a basement opposite The Cavern Club of Beatles fame). Others belonging to the "New Liverpool Scene" included Echo & the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark, Dead or Alive, Pink Military & others.

Modern Eon had a few compilation tracks & then a minor hit with "Euthenics". In June 1981 they released their only album, Fiction Tales. The songs are fueled by powerful tom-tom driven, inventive drumming provided by the band's new drummer, 17 yr. old Cliff Hewitt. Their music differs from their musical peers by occasionally adding odd analog electronics & saxophone while Alix's vocals are bathed in reverb & delivered with a smooth eloquence yet are barely intelligible. The music is moody & melodic but a certain harshness bursts through that always leaves a vaguely mysterious impression.

Following the release of Fiction Tales, a tour was arranged supporting The Stranglers. But, during rehearsal sessions Cliff Hewitt, whose drumming style had become such an integral part of the bands sound, seriously injured his wrist. He did contribute to scheduled appearances for the John Peel, Richard Skinner, & In Concert Radio One radio shows, but it soon became apparent that the rigors of a tour would be too much for him. A suitable replacement could not easily be found. The solution was that they toured with Cliff's drum tracks on a tape machine which Cliff operated.

The end of 1981 found Modern Eon at work on demos for a second album with Cliff back on his drum stool but sadly, Modern Eon faded away, never to release a follow up album.

Both the single "Be My..." & Narcotic are a druggy mixture of dubby funk & big beats that came about as the result of Alix meeting Adrian Sherwood (who produces three songs - "Fireflies", "Imperfections", & "Be My Powerstation") & Tackhead (former Sugarhill Gang legends Doug Wimbish, Skip McDonald, & Keith LeBlanc who provide all the music).

Somethin’ from The Nothing from Nothin’

Trixz Sly (Torquill Smith) met Johnny Thunders & Jerry Nolan of The New York Dolls while they were in London in the mid-70s. He moved to New York City in 1978 where he formed The Nothing. The following year they recorded their lone 45.

By 1980, several members had left to join other bands & The Nothing broke up. Trixz later formed another band, the Cyanide Sweeties (along with Nothing bandmate Mickey Crash & Reactors guitarist Professor Ginz). They played the rock/punk clubs in NYC including CBGBs, & built a solid fan following at Max's Kansas City. Trixz played with many musicians, including The Misfits, The New York Dolls, The Sex Pistols, Billy Idol, Lou Reed, & Keith Richards.

Trixz recorded a solo 45 "Bossa Nova Baby" in 1980. He continued working with experimental music & film until his death in 2005. He partnered up with Adam West (Batman) to film a documentary on Woodstock '94, but the project was never finished. At the end of his life he was an activist for the homeless in Miami. He presented the "Homeless Bill of Rights" to the city of Miami Beach. He was found dead in his apartment. The cause of death was declared as "natural causes."

UPDATE TO ABOVE: directly from Mickey Crash -

"Angel Lectra (David Hames) should be credited as Lead Guitar and Musical Arranger. The lead guitar parts were played by Bobby B. Wild (Bob Stojack), but he left the band before the 7 inch record release. Angel was credited as Lead Guitarist since he would be the lead guitarist from then on until he left to join The Rockcats. The Nothing was originally formed by Trixz and Angel in 1978. The first show was in December 1978 at Max's Kansas City. Trixz was banned from Max's as a result of that show, evidently because it didn't go well. I played my first gig with The Nothing shortly after at Studio Zero on December 23, 1978 and moved to NYC from Hartford the following April. Angel and I played previously in a band from CT called Electroflex, Prior to that I was in another CT based punk band called The Hysterics. There was no bass tracks on Uniformz or Scream and Cry. Phil Shoenfelt (http://www.philshoenfelt.de/) played bass in a later incarnation of The Nothing and Trixz's following band, The Cyanide Sweeties. An earlier incarnation of that band existed in the UK with Gass Wild (Tom Edwards) on drums. Gass is still performing and has a terrific NYC based band called The Love Pirates. The Nothing also added Webster Smith on Keyboards at the same time as Phil Shoenfelt after Angel left in early January, 1980. The name The Nothing was changed to The Cyanide Sweeties so we could get a gig at Max's Kansas City, which we did! That band added Ed Rollin on Sax. and performed at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) and other venues. Phil Shoenfelt and I went on to play in Disturbed Furniture together and Phil switched to lead guitar.
The Nothing is: Trixz Sly - vocals; Bobby B. Wild - guitar; Phil Schoenfelt - bass; & Mickey Crash - drums."

You Urban Achievers are not Gonna Believe It

Last weekend while I was crate digging at a local thrift shop here in Sactown, I came across one of my all-time holy grail albums (as you can see from one of their show flyers, they believe in me). There are rumors galore as to whether or not any more copies of this album are extant. It was believed that the NA (Nihilist Against) had successfully destroyed all existing versions of this great 1978 German techno-pop one-off nugget Nagelbett by Autobahn.

German techno-pop pioneers Autobahn released only one album entitled Nagelbett in the late 70s. They are perhaps the best example of a band being "ahead of its time". Though they are now recognized as great innovators in the world of techno, their album was almost universally disparaged by both critics & audiences alike. Utterly demoralized, the band dissolved. All of its members fell on hard times with band leader Uli Kunkel even resorting to the adult film industry (as Karl Hungus) before disappearing from the public eye completely, without even an ethos.

Autobahn members: Uli Kunkel, Kieffer Funkel, & Franz Unkel
