I haven't done this series in a long time but today I was visiting A Few Good Times in My Life blog. Walter was reminiscing about UB40's first release Signing Off. Commentors were lamenting the sad decline of the band after their first three albums. 

I'll be the first to admit that they put out a bunch of Live albums & lost direction discs & tapered off from their heyday, but I always thought that they had enough chestnuts throughout their catalogue to keep them vital. For me, one in particular...

Anyone familiar here at all is familiar with jonder, long-time Frenz of this here mess. We first came in contact many years ago when I had just started NSS & jonder had the great blog Underneathica. We came together over our shared love for particular musicks & our mutual respect for each other’s dedication to quality musickal sharing. In the years since then we have become friends away from the blogsphere as well, sharing musick, books, & conversations. He has contributed numerous posts here in the past & now with his cohort Stinky, mans the helm at the fantastic jonderblog. You've probably read many of his insightfully humorous comments hereabouts.

The other day he announced the upcoming  reissue of Pearl Harbor (yes, that one with all the explosions going on)'s 1980 solo album Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Too which led to Paul Simonon & Nigel Dixon which led to Havana 3 A.M. which led to this.

This time the prompt was a two-fer, in a way. First, I was frequenting one of my regular haunts, Zero G Sounds. What prompted this was Zero's recent posting of the truly stellar debut This Heat by This Heat ...which leads to the second part of this prompt from blog friend Rev. B.

On the Mark Stewart tribute post A Rage of Angels from a few days back, Rev commented:
     "Thank you so much. This really was a punch in the gut. (The Pop Group's) For How Much Longer (Will We Tolerate Mass Murder)... along with This Heat's Deceit pretty much summed up my world view at the time. Honestly, much of what has happened in the world since has validated rather than diminished that outlook."

 

Founded in Camberwell, London, UK in 1975 by Dolphin Logic & the collision with a self confessed non- musician, then seething forth from Cold Storage (a disused meat pie factory in Brixton) with muscular rhythms, musique concrete, found sounds, & bizarre lyrics inhabiting a bizarre, post apocalyptic soundscape, This Heat (Charles Hayward - keyboards, drums, vocals; Charles Bullen - guitar, viola, clarinet, vocals; & Gareth Williams  organ, bass, vocals) only recorded until 1982, with only two albums & a 12" single, yet their legacy looms large in my world.

To paraphrase what Rev. sez: "Honestly, much of what has happened in the world since 1980 has validated rather than diminished the outlook of This Heat." I couldn't agree more deeply. So the two combined through the quantum entanglement that unites our destinies to prompt this post. Zero & Rev.B, thank you both so very much.

This is the second time I've been prompted by myvinyldreams. I was prompted by them the second time this series appeared, here. At My Vinyl Dreams you'll mostly find 80s/90s vinyl (usually singles & EPs) with all the extra tracks & remixes that come with the singles releases.

DJjedredy (Primary School teacher in Manchester. Vinyl junkie & 80s nostalgia freak) posted several Faithless remix releases. Get them here & here. 

 

I used to listen to Faithless a great deal in the late 90s/early 00s. As oft times happens, my listening pleasures changed. This great crew fell to the wayside only because of my lack of attention & shortness of memory. Eternally grateful for the prompt. 

 

Faithless was, at its core: Maxwell Fraser, better known by his stage name Maxi Jazz, a British musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, & DJ (he died December 23, 2022 R.I.P.); along with Rowland Constantine O'Malley Armstrong known musically as Rollo; & Ayalah Deborah Bentovim, best known by her stage name Sister Bliss, a British keyboardist, record producer, DJ, & songwriter. In the studio, she & Rollo make up the production duo Rollo & Sister Bliss.

The group's first release, 1995s Reverence was a minor underground classic but failed to break into the mass consciousness. That changed with their next release, 1998s Sunday 8PM with it's break-out hit "God is a DJ".

Leven & Thomas met on the south coast of England in 1996, recognizing a musical kinship. They are road-travellers, collectors of funny, tragic, dangerous, often true, always real, human tales. They are natural born storytellers, equally at ease with either song or spoken word. They recognized each other as soul mates, yet they are each loners, uncompromising, dedicated to unique vision. It is this magnetic tension of opposition & attraction that makes for such a compelling performance.

The other day I was checking out the latest from Bleak Bliss.

 

Badgerstump has posted much Sun City Girls & related items over the years. Recently he posted Horse Cock Phepner. Even more recently the rare, scarce & saught-after SCG self-titled.

 

 

Being a SCG fanman, I have shared Sun City Girls & related items here as well: Kaliflower; The Girls of Sun City comp; Alvarius B. 

Bleak Bliss's recent posts made me think of one of my favorite SCG's album, Midnight Cowboys from Ipanema. That was the first thing from the Girls that I posted around here...May 2008. 

It's an insane combination of short snippets of avant-poetry & cover songs.  "Love Train".  "Radar Love".  "Me & Mrs. Jones".  The cover sez: THE HIT SOUND THAT MADE THESE GREAT SONGS GREAT!  It's kinda SCG's Third Reich 'n' Roll.

I've followed Die or DIY blog for more than a decade.  Jonny Zchivago is an Agent Provocateur for musickal madness. He loves to rile things up. He also has some of the deepest insights into the world of crazy music. I don't get a great deal of material from his blog, as it seems the music always falls into three categories for me: 1] Not really interested; 2] Already have it (weird but enjoyable); & 3] Shit. But ever so often something grabs me & I grab it right back.

 

Recently after a short absence (“A prolonged absence may have been noted by your faithful scribe,but i have been an unwilling victim of a Co-Vid variant!”) Jonny posted one by Lemon Kittens (Live 1980 / 81). Even if you're no interested in Lemon Kittens, go read Jonny's screed. You'll surely get a kick out of it. I could relate in several ways. I too suffered through a bout with the Evil Covid & also suffered from the malaise of brain fog that was its calling card. Lemon Kittens were always one of the WEIRD bands that I enjoyed (always a Danielle Dax fan - see Lemon Kitten Pariah post here from last years Fems of Feb. series). I'm always cruising around the interweb, looking for interesting music. I'll see or hear something out there that sets me on a path.

Most of my blog visitations are prompted by a combination of: primarily the music shared & secondarily for the verbal content of the posts (really, mom, I go there for the articles, not the pictures) & the repartee of commentors. I very rarely visit blogs that just post music without content, unless I'm searching for something specific. One of the exceptions is Exystence.

Exystence has more postings than any other blog I know & they include content with every release, but the write-ups are music journal/ist reviews without much soul. They are a warehose of name-dropping (...they sound like...?...?...?...) but I barely skim the articles ( & the comments run to the "Thanks, EXY"..."Wow, man"  ..."This is shit" style).

The thing about Exystence is that most everything is days-old releases or this week's reissues of Classic albums, so it can be a treasure trove of music. For me, most of the new bands I have never heard, so I have to sift through a lot of chaff to fine a kernel of goodness. So I go there once a week when I have a few free (add time increment here)s & dowload everything that seems even slightly interesting. Then over the course of the following week I start sifting (by sifting I mean listening to a wide wide range of sounds) through all the downloads. I usually come up with one or two keepers a week.

So I have compiled this compilation from music I have deemed worthy.

This part of this series was actually prompted by two different blogs that combined to send me on this journey. 

 

Sal Nunziato runs Burning Wood blog. His life is music, so he knows it from the inside. He is most into 20th Century artists & their continuing output this centuty. Alway somehing there that we mere mortals probably missed.

Starting the week off with "Rolling Stone: Please Just Call it a Day".

About this, Sal sez:
     "I should know better. But I guess that is why it's called click bait. Rolling Stone has released their list of '50 Greatest Concept Albums' and if you can get beyond 49 without reaching for a heavy object to throw at your computer screen or crush your phone to bits, more power to you."

I haven't read fucking RS for decades. Last place I'd want to find out what's really going on in music. They're kinda just a glorified advertisement. But I read the article & all the interesting reader comment. I even checked out their list. What a load of shite. 

 

A couple days later I was visiting A History of Dubious Taste blog to catch up on things I might have missed. I have to say I don't check in with AHoDT as often as I should, but I always check out whatever is there for some suprisingly great finds.

There was a posting from October 12 that caught my attention, "The 100 Greatest UK Number 1 Singles".

After having read the Rolling Stone shitlist, I decided I should check out The Guardian's list. I figured that they had nothing to particularly gain by hyping any acts, so at least I figured their criteria would be different. Jez had been doing a series featuring these #1 songs starting with Bill Haley & the Comets - "Rock Around the Clock", #100, November 18, 2020. The Ocober 12, 2022 post was #89. It was the Sugarbabes - "Freak Like Me".

I decided to peruse The Guardian list for myself just to see how bad it was. It was worse than I had imagined. Got to #78 before I found a song I'd ever listen to, so I  decided to make a compilation of any of the songs I deemed listenable IMO. After compiling the set, I was incredulous to realize that only one song was from the 21st Century. I went back over the original Guardian list. Only twenty-five of the 100 songs were even from this century. Those were from the likes of Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, Lil Nas X, Carly Rae Jepsen, & their ilk.

The set I compiled follows the Law of Fives & the Sacred 23, The KLF - "3am Eternal. Jimmy Cauty & Bill Drummond had already written a book on how to have a No. 1 record, The Manual. Guess they took a page from their own playbook. After that the list is in descending order from #78, a song I've posted here before. "Something in the Air" - Thunderclap Newman. Then the last track is one of my all time favorite songs from the first band I ever saw live, The Four Tops. Great place to end this crazy side-trip. Flash back much?

Every few days I check out Things & Time Will Tell blog. 

 

A few days ago I noticed a post titled "Sade at the Movies (for Beginners)". Being a career-long Sade fan, I was drawn in.

MM starts off:
     "Sade fans aren't impatient...their last studio release was 2010...I've never heard news, leaks, or promises of a new record coming despite the twelve year gap."

Well, there's this. Stuart Matthewman, multi-instumentalist, songwriter, & original member of Sade's band, told Rated R&B that the singer is back in the studio.
     "We're working on a new album with a bunch of songs fans will love."

MM went on:
     "There's been the occasional 'best of' compilation or vinyl reissue, but we haven't even seen 'deluxe edition' cash-ins packed with demo tracks & no compilations collecting the 12" edits, official remixes, or non-album B sides that are out there."

I recently started checking out A Few Good Times in My Life blog since friend Jonder added it to his list over at jonderblog. 

 

The other day A Few Good Times featured Hadsworth Revolution by Steel Pulse.

 

Steel Pulse are one of the best UK reggae outfits ever. I included an expanded & remastered version of their Earth Crisis on a April 2018 post called Dubbin’ Me Now because of the great Dubs that were bonus tracks on that particular version. You can find it here.

Though basically a great roots reggae band, Steel Pulse have an extensive Dub catalogue, deep enough to whip up this compilation.
