Steve Roach was a professional motorbike racer from La Mesa, California. At the age of twenty, inspired by the music of Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, & Klaus Schulze, Roach taught himself to play synthesizers. In 1982 he released his debut album Now which is very similar in style to his musical influences.
By 1984, however, his work took a huge step forward. Drawing on the power of the earth's landscapes to create lush, meditative soundscapes, Structures from Silence highlighted the expansive mysterious atmosphere inspired directly by the natural beauty of the southwestern U.S. Roach had moved to the desert outskirts of Tucson, Arizona & took his inspiration from his immediate surroundings.
Roach is a prolific composer & talented multi-instumentalist whose music has been higely influential on the emergence of Ambient & trance.
