Tortoise is a post-rock band from Chicago formed in 1990. In fact, Tortoise is one of the progenitors of the whole 90s post-rock sound. Their eclectic blending of Dub, dance, electronica, lo-fi, punk along with spaghetti western, jazz, & classic rock set the tone for the entire genre
.
One of the really unique things about the band was its instrumental make-up, initially two bass guitars (Doug McCombs/co-founder & Bundy K. Brown) with three percussionists(John Herndon/co-founder, John McEntire, & Dan Bitney) switching between drums, vibraphones, & marimbas, all manipulated by John McEntire’s recording & mixing genius. Around 1998 Jeff Parker joined the group as guitarist.
