Plagiarism® is a collective vision. It is also the registered trademark (with tongue deeply in cheek) of the Tape-beatles, originally the Iowa City duo of Lloyd Dunn & John Heck.
They set out to create music without using musical instruments. Their sampling was a conscious attemp at cultural & economic usage of so-called copyrighted material. They were influenced by the audio collage work of French concrete musicians, such as Pierre Henri & Pierre Schaeffer as well as a few other modernist composers like Edgard Varèse & John Cage.
Their first release was a resounding success...

I don't know why I never really got into The Tape-Beatles, so this is a welcome stimulation to try again. Many thanks, Nate!
ReplyDeleteIf you never really listen to the Tape-beatles, this should be fun. Thanks, brother.
DeleteOooh yeah, this is just what I needed, more chaotic plunderphonics! I've only had "The Grand Delusion" in my collection and always wanted to hear more. Thank you for this share.
ReplyDeleteTo your health, my friend. Enjoy these great outings. Plunderphonics always grabbed my ear. Plus I totally relate to the theft of sounds ethos. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat to have your audience discover this interesting, far out collective (I try to bring "plunderphonics" in my vocabulary, thanks Mooz). I discovered them through People like Us, and just as for them and many others, you can find some (all?) if their discography on the excellent, now extinct but still functional Ubuweb :

Thanks for the Ubu link. More Tape-beatles. yeah.
DeleteOups, of course you propose eps which are NOT on Ubuweb ! Good on you, Nathan, I'll check those two!
ReplyDeleteGlad I could add to your enjoyment.
