Before I fold up my lounge chair & umbrella, pack up my cooler, & head off to Weird October, to pump up the Volume for the Month of Mauz, I just want to say thank you to all of you who joined me this month on Echo Beach for the busiest Dubtember ever. More than 190,000 folks dropped by the Beach this month, more than three times the usual monthly average. In fact there were a couple super-Sunny days where more than 10,000 folks crowded the beach. That's more than five times the usual daily average. You all managed to warm my heart as much as the Summer sun warmed my skin. You made my sharing seem like it really matters. So once more...THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!

Lee 'Scratch' Perry is, as the liner notes sez, 
     ''file under – The Legend !!!''

We all (should) know this musickal Legend, the Upsetter himself, Rainford Perry.

 

 

Here he teamed up with Dubblestandart, the Viennese  Dub/reggae phenoms. Together with Ari Up, they released Dubblestandart / Lee Perry & Ari-Up - Return from Planet Dub.

Much of that release is here remixed by producer, DJ, remixer Robo Bass Hifi (Markus Kammann) who delivers a tight combination of Roots, jungle, Dub, dubstep, UK digiDub, & drum 'n' bass. His electro reggae flavour is drenched in BASS!

 

 

 

On this excursion, Robo Bass Hifi leads Lee 'Scratch' Perry & Dubblestandart into his dark room to augment his mastery of the deep, thick bass. Great 21st Century Perry outings, both the original & the remix.

Formed in 2017, L.A.B., from Whakatane, New Zealand have become one of the most-popular acts in New Zealand music. An eclectic mix of reggae, electronic, blues & funk all combine to create a sound entirely their own.

The band is made up of: Joel Shadbolt – guitar & vocals; Stu Kora – keysboards & vocals; Miharo Gregory – keysboards; Ara Adams-Tamatea – bass, & Brad Kora – drums & vocals. Since their inception, L.A.B. have performed at almost every major festival across NZ, as well as multiple sold-out headline tours of Australia. They won two 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards including the People's Choice Award.

I have shared producer, engineer, bassist, & sonic visionary Paolo Baldini before here.

His first band was B.R. Stylers, an Italian reggae Dub band from Pordenone, Italy founded in 2000. B.R. Stylers stood out in the Italian reggae scene thanks to Paolo's innovative use of electronics & UK-inspired sounds, a distinctive feature for his music ever since.

In 2006 Baldini joined Italy's longest-established reggae band Africa Unite (shared here earlier). As well as playing bass, he produced two of their albums (Controlli & Rootz). Over time, Paolo's approach & techniques became increasingly analog, inspired by Jamaican Dub legends such as King Tubby & Scientist. 

 

In 2014 Baldini debuted his solo project Paolo Baldini DubFiles, focusing on his work as a Dubmaster. In February 2015 he travelled to Jamaica to record what would become his second album, entitled At Song Embassy Papine Kingston 6. Dozens of artists from the Papine ghetto, many unknown to the mainstream public, transformed Baldini's riddims into a tribute to the spontaneity & genius of Jamaican music. Baldini has worked with Dubblestandart (Dub ME Crazy), Al Brown & Inner Force, Mellow Mood, Imperial Sound Army, & many more.

Scottish DJ, producer, remixer, radio host, writer, event promoter, music consultant, activist, & label boss from Glasgow, JD Twitch (Keith McIvor) died from terminal brain cancer on September 19th.

Beginning as  'Twitch' while running the long-standing techno/leftfield night Pure in Edinburgh in 1990, then adding the 'JD' prefix in the late 90s for the Optimo nights in Glasgow. 

I've got one of his DJ mixes on cassette that I'll share right now, from the Solar Lodge, March 2021.

Kid Loco is Jean-Yves Prieur, French electronic musician, DJ, remixer, & producer born in Antony, Hauts-de-Seine, France. I first heard of Kid Loco from his trip-hop adjacent A Grand Love Story. On this one, Kid Loco once more calls on Soul Sugar (Guillaume Méténier).

As a all-around keyboard master, Soul Sugar has been featured on numerous Kid Loco productions for more than twenty years. From synthesizer to clavinet, from the Fender Rhodes to the Leslie organ, the "Funky Frenchman" is no stranger to any keyboard instrument.

Here the two decide to somehow Dub up the works of Kraftwerk. 

What a concept. Only on Echo Beach...

Dubmatix (born Jesse E. King) is one of Canada's premiere Dub, reggae, & electro artist / producers. Starting with his debut release Champion Sound Clash in 2004, the Toronto-born producer has garnered a great deal of attention & recognition (including the 2009 JUNO Nominated Renegade Rocker, the 2010 JUNO Award Win for Best Reggae Recording for "Gonna Be Alright", & the 2019 JUNO Award for Best Reggae Recording for another Echo Beach release Overdubbed (with Sly & Robbie) that I shared Dubtember 2023 here as well as collaborating with some of reggae's most influential legends such as the late Alton Ellis (The Godfather of Rocksteady), The Mighty Diamonds, Michael Rose (Black Uhuru & Grammy Award winner), & many more.

His musical production varies from pure, old-school King Tubby Dub to the freshest electro-shock to classic Conscious roots to Drum 'n' Bass & many other styles. Growing up, Dubmatix spent countless hours recording first on a 4-track reel-to-reel tape machine, later on one of the first 12-track digital home studio's of the 80s. A multi-instrumentalist, Dubmatix performs all instruments on each release that including guitar, bass, drums, piano/keyboard, melodica, & percussion. Dubmatix has developed a unique signature sound style that is immediately recognizable. It's a Phil Spector-esque full sound utilizing heavy bass, majestic horn lines, thick-set percussive grooves combined with strong production values for his own Wall of Dub Sound.

Before founding Echo Beach in 1995, Nicolai Beverungen was responsible for marketing & distribution for Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound in Germany between 1991 & 1995. This professional relationship fostered a lasting connection between the two Dub-centric imprints. Even after Beverungen launched Echo Beach, both labels continued to release complementary projects & share artists. A perfect example is this release from Dub Syndicate

In 1985, Dub Syndicate's fourth album Tunes from the Missing Channel was released. With this release, Dub Syndicate gave birth to a highly experimental technological Dub sound. It ushered in a whole new genre in Dub. What has been labeled 'new roots' can trace its ancestry to this one album, which I shared here. 

From that 1985 sound stage, Dub Syndicate sharpened their experimental Dub under the guiding hand of artistic genius & premier drummer Lincoln Valentine 'Style' Scott, R.I.P... 

Here is No Bed of Roses... Of all the groups fantastic releases, this is my all-time favorite Dub Syndicate.

They play bass heavy modern roots, Dubwise, Afrobeat, hip-hop & urban grooves,

The band represents peace, cosmopolitanism, & respect. They oppose war, intolerance, & isolationism. Without borders or walls. Praise to a colorful diversity & joie de vivre, in day-to-day life as in music.

An eight man travelling circus in terms of reggae / rock 'n' roll roadshows. They’ve appeared on the stages of Europe, Africa, & South America for 25 years.

Here they are, yes that’s right...In DUB!!! Wake & Bake indeed. I did just that & am forever changed. Praise! This is top-ranked by this Dubhed...This musick is the heartbeat.

Africa Unite is a reggae band from Pinerolo, Turin, Italy, founded in 1981 by Bunna (Vitale Bonino) & Madaski (Franco Caudullo). They were originally Africa United but they removed the ‘d’ in 1992 just before releasing their Cantè EP. The name was taken from a song by Bob Marley, one of their biggest influences.

They have released 13 highly acclaimed albums since starting out, establishing themselves as one of the most prestigious & popular Italian reggae bands. They are still going strong today, doing live gigs throughout the world. Here they hit the Beach with their own reggae-drenched Dub (with some help from crazy Mad Professor along the way)...

Jan Phillip Eißfeldt is better known as Jan Delay, a German hip hop musician, singer, songwriter, & producer, born in Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany. Active since 1991, he released his first solo album Searching for the Jan Soul Rebels in 2001. This is the Dub version released a few years later...

The Rootsman is Edinburgh, Scotland born John Leo Bolloten, musician & DJ based out of Bradford, England. The Rootsman is a radio host, Razor X Productions Sound System wizard, founder of Third Eye Misic, former Muslimgauze collaborator, & all around musical genius. 

He has recently announced on his Bookface page that he is retiring from music at the end of this year, so if you get a chance to see him do his thing before then, I highly advise you do so.

On this one, all tracks The Rootsman except track 1 - Oochi, track 5 with Monument, track 9 with Dayjah & the Disciples, track 11 with the Disciples, track 15 - Strongpoint, & track 16 - Dub Chandra. Produced by the Rootsman.
