Nate, I'm really enjoying this and has gotten me out of my introverted shell the last few months. Happily revisiting some albums I've neglected for at least a decade.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first Rapoon album I'd not heard before in this matchup series. All ambient, no percussion for the original album, tracks 5-8 with percussion (mostly) were added for the reissue. I found that the album tracks were significantly longer on the original release, with the exception of Horned Moon which is longer here. Messianic Ghosts title track has an odd audio drop at the halfway point, then comes back with more of the same. Babel's Tongues is similar. Not sure what I think about that, kind of strikes me as out of place and not sure I'd want to hear them in their extended formats. The previously unreleased tracks (#5&7) feel unfinished to me. The last track Amuz is probably my favorite on here, its quite strong for Rapoon.
As for Eostre, this is one of my preferred ZF releases. Shout the Storm with its vocals and building intensity is a real highlight, as is the almost pretty song Pearroc.
Gustr, all reversed is probably the only low point on the album for me. The harsh contrast of Cad Goddeau keeps things interesting towards the end. Ending with Angelus and Neptune really solidifies this as one of my favorite releases of theirs.
ZF for the win again this time.
Completely agree with Mooz. It's a great opportunity to revisit some great albums. And writing a few lines about them brings back fond memories of the days when I was doing a fanzine some 30 years ago. Also agree that ZF is the winner.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the original version of Messianic Ghosts - definitely not Robin Storey's greatest effort, but slightly different from many other Rapoon albums. The reworked and expanded messianicghosts is more of the usual Rapoon, definitely not bad, but no match for Eostre.
To me Eostre is the perfect blend of their older harsher sounds and their (Dark) Ambient tendencies. And it's definitely one of their most intense albums. Listening to it again did, indeed, feel like a challenge even though I thought I was familiar with this album. Have to revisit it again during the following days.
You two are now the official color commentators for these Play-offs. Your comments are helpful for everyone checking these out or considering checking these out. I have listened to these projects for years & collected everything I could easily get my hands on, but I have nowhere near the in-depth insights to the mechanations of these works. I so appreciate all the added information you both provide. Keep up the great stuff. The Finals are not far off.
