Here's some experimental lo-fi acoustic rock from Brooklyn, NYC consisting of guitarist/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/sound technician Brian Sullivan, drum/percussionist Chris Shields & guitarist/tape manipulator KHF (Patric Cole). United Waters started late 2009 as an evolution of Sullivan's intense noise background into muffled, subterranean, melodic outsider songwriting. At times they remind me of a certain-era Sun City Girls???
The sound of United Waters is rock 'n' roll submerged. The New York trio's music is as H20-logged as their name implies, woozily off-speed, as if they've been playing in the deep end so long their notes & beats have contracted a case of the bends. That sounds like a formula for a downer of an album, but actually submerging United Waters' songs in a claustrophobic pool makes them more engaging. The way the wiry guitar lines creep toward the surface, the way Brian Sullivan's doubled moans rise from the buried tunes like ghosts, beckons you to dive deep for more.
