J.F.A. or JFA is the common notation for the Phoenix, Arizona skatepunk band Jodie Foster's Army (a twisted reference to John Hinckley's attempt at murdering Reagan just days before the band formed).
The band was made up of skater friends Brian Brannon - vocals, Don Redondo - guitar, Mike Cornelius - bass, & Mike ‘Bam Bam' Sversvold - drums. One of the footnotes to this great band is that Sun City Girls alum Alan Bishop played bass for the band at one time (1984-1986).
JFA was hugely responsible for the rise & enjoyment of skatepunk.Their first gig was opening for Black Flag. JFA's first national tour was in the summer of 1983 following the release of their first full-length album Valley of the Yakes.

DeleteHoly hardcore, Batman, this takes me back to my Maximum R 'n' R-reading days! The best thing that came my way from listening to a lot of poor-quality 2nd & 3rd-hand cassettes back then was my introduction to Detention, and 'Dead Rock 'n' Rollers'. Well no, this crew, Naked Raygun and Channel 3 were right up there too. Oh, and N.O.T.A. Actually, there were quite a lot of good bands back then weren't there? Happy days.
ReplyDeleteGuess this one struck a chord with us oldsters (see comment below). It sure sounded good to these old ears.
DeleteI like the range of music you post. JFA always had an ad in Thrasher Magazine, and were featured in many of the Skate Rock compilation series of that time, even a few decks with their logos, so they were at least heavily visible outside their local scene. (As were Agent Orange, another classic skaterock band.) I hadn't heard this first album of theirs until now, so thanks for posting it! I'm 52 now, but still get out to the skatepark... and I'm not the oldest one there. ;0)
ReplyDeleteLandshark Go! Thanks.
