On any post, if the link is no longer good, leave a comment if you want the music re-uploaded. As long as I still have the file, or the record, cd, or cassette to re-rip, I will gladly accommodate in a timely manner all such requests.

Tea is for Trad

The second offering from the great Cup of Tea Records.

Spaceways was a seven-piece outfit complete with horn section, the group formed in 1989 at the height of the UK acid jazz craze. Their roots in acid jazz influenced Trip-hop are evident in their first full-length debut, Trad.

Spaceways played a groove-based, live-sounding integration of funky, sequenced beats, live percussion with lots of brass, guitars, stand-up bass, & other instrumental affects not normally associated with electronic dance music, Spaceways were part of  a new crop of artists re-exploring dance music's roots through live performance.

  2. Acid jazz was one of those genres which passed almost completely beneath my radar, back in the day, so i know next-to-nothing about it. It's the name - i was expecting more from a collision involving jazz and acid. But, as ever searching for ways to drain the swamp of my ignorance, now would be a good chance to park my prejudice and listen properly for once. Cheers, mate.

    1. Genres, label, pigeon-holes. Hate 'em but use 'em, trying for a little clarity, usually just muddying the waters. It's Cup of Tea Records...they're eclectic, ya just have ta give 'em a listen & decide.

  3. Finally getting around to giving this a listen and really enjoyed it. I generally grab things based on your descriptions as you are always spot on. For this one, its the incidental and more freeform tracks that really stand out for me, like "Kurosawa Meets Slow Charlie." "Requiem for Ra," and "Death of a Silent Planet." Otherwise, the grooves are nice, vocals alright, and overall a very good album from a band I'd not know of if not for you.

    1. Good to hear from you, my friend, especially back at this post. "Kurosawa" is one of my favorite tracks here. I find this band quite surprising. But you can always trust Cup of Tea for something tastee.
