On any post, if the link is no longer good, leave a comment if you want the music re-uploaded. As long as I still have the file, or the record, cd, or cassette to re-rip, I will gladly accommodate in a timely manner all such requests.

The Month of Mauz...Disposing of Heroes

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy were an American industrial hip-hop band founded in 1990 in San Francisco & lasted until 1993. The members were Michael Franti - vocals, production, multiple instruments & Rono Tse - drums, percussion, programming, both previously in The Beatnigs.

The Heroes music addressed a wide range of social issues: homophobia; media bias & abuse; & racial equality. Similar to other bands like Pop Will Eat Itself or House of Pain, the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy used sampling & scratching as a primary tool of music recording, mixing rock, hip hop, & jazz while Franti's half-spoken vocal stylings were reminiscent of Gil Scott-Heron or Last Poets.

The recording of Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury was co-produced by Consolidated's Mark Pistel while Meat Beat Manifesto frontman Jack Dangers assisted with mixing.

In 1993, the duo worked with William S. Burroughs, recording music for a collaborative album entitled Spare Ass Annie and Other Tales. This album sounds nothing like Hypocrisy, much more soulful jazz influence as the Heroes were mainly providing musical background & accompaniment to Burroughs' readings. This one steers closer to the Last Poets, similarly fantastic. This is such a great excuse for me to play some more Bills.

Interlude 4 (Fletch is Here)

Last Words with Michael Franti

As well as being one of the last recorded works by William S. Burroughs, this was also the last album by the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. The Disposable Heroes split up shortly thereafter

Hoping you see these, mauz.

  4. Spare Ass Annie! Bought it when it came out. The Disposables split soon after, I can somehow imagine hhh. A great album, that I like to play together with Timothy Leary's 'You Can Be Anyone This Time Around', which you posted also I believe? Anyway, another great set of albums, which I will thoroughly enjoy, so thanks again! And since it's weird october, come on everyone, and clap your hands to:

I noticed my Bremen folder of Beatnigs was incomplete. It missed the intro track.
For some reason it was not included. Here it is and please put it in the Bremen folder.

    1. Richard, thanks for these tangential offerings & thanks for taking the time to add the missing track. Franti & Rono ripping it up.

  7. Thanks NØ! I've really enjoyed Michael Franti, et al, over the years. The change in vibes from the fiery DHH to the early super-political Spearhead (Home, Chocolate Supa Highway, and the anti-death penalty concept album Stay Human) to the stadium rock family friendly Michael Franti has been interesting.
    You're always paying the bills!

  9. Thanks NØ, and thanks to Richard for posting a bounty of Beatnigs above! NØ, your posts this month are weird and challenging in the best way, this is really capturing the spirit of the music blogosphere circa 2007 for me. Loving it! Also, Beatnigs showed up on one of those On-U Sound compilations with a remix and it was incredible. World-class shame that more didn't come out of that creative collab between Beatnigs/DHH and Mr. Sherwood!

  10. Thank you very very much for these! I had cassettes of the 2 main DHH albums above back in the day, but have never properly researched/listened to anything by The Beatnigs. Thank you Richard and Anonymous for the additional shares! I've been re-re-reading Jerry Mander's classic book, Four Arguements For The Elimination Of Television, so it was a nice coincidence to see these accompanying soundtracks posted here. (Although I won't multitask; I'll engage my attention with them separately.)
    Cheers! :0)
