  2. To me, Rapoon takes the win. From Shadows Sleep is my favourite Rapoon album (together with Vernal Crossing). The dark atmosphere, the minimal approach, the restrained use of effects - all this is perfect.
Just An Illusion is also very good. Especially the longer drones in Ascend a Fall and Caught in the Square are beautiful and form an impressive centre piece in this album. Some other pieces are more solid than excellent, however. Even though this is a strong ZF album, there are others that I return to more often.

  3. Apart from the first ZF all your picks have been 1990-1995, and the Rapoons are all over the place. This is an observation without judgement.
When I listened to Rapoon before this, now ten day, marathon, I liked the monotonous vibe I got from it. A serious but sometimes sombre sound. When I feld that way it was fitting. Now ten days in a row there is a feeling that I am not liking it. Too much of the same? Dosed I liked it, so I am going to stop listening to the next, for I do not want to spoil my fondness by overindulging.
ZF I could easily hear on and on, they have an adventurous and often surprising way of not being ambient, of being music without familiar structure. The lack of grip I have on it is a joy. Often I do not know what to expect, and I can be pleasently surprised.
The piece of music I added a few days ago is a good example. It is a piece on its own. I simply did one action and surprisingly it worked. The depth and the layers of ZF are wonderful.
I did not request ZF "um sonst", I think they are out-standing. You could add a hattrick as far as I am concerned to your score.

    1. The era of my picks simply reflect the material that I have or what I felt I wanted to share.

These are just shares that I wanted for folks who come by here. If you are listening to too much that it is becoming repetitive, then take a break from it for a few. You can just grab them & then listen to them at your pleasure. Or just come back later when you're in the mood. They're not going anywhere soon. Thank for your insight & I'll add your scores.

  4. Thank you so much NØ! how generous of you! I missed these albums, some that I got from Mutant Sounds and lost with stolen hard drive.... But I will go back to them with new ears, still I remember really enjoying Rapoon a lot and still have on CD of him, Rhiz.

  5. The percussion and loops sound like they could've been the foundation for many Rapoon tracks. "Ascend a Fall" and "Caught In The Square" are absolutely wonderful drony ambient pieces that are captivating. The bookends "Lief Lulla / Kim" are wonderful pieces of ethno-ambient industrial music from the ZF camp. Overall a well structured and enjoyable album that showcases them at one of their peaks.

I read up on "From Shadows Sleep" and found that it is Rapoon reworking and sampling Zoviet France's "Shadow, Thief of the Sun." Never put that together myself, but now it makes sense. This is an OK album from Rapoon, not their best. I find myself skipping several of the tracks as they just don't engage me that much. "The Darkness of Ages" and "The Cold Sun Rising" are highlights. "The Iron Red Sun" sounds like it could be lifted straight from a ZF album.

ZF gets my vote. Just not a strong enough release from Rapoon this time.
