    Both albums oscillate between/drone ambient elements and ethnic sounds (or whatever one wants to call that ...). Whereas I finde Gesture Signal Threat undecided (and some of the "ethnic" parts are really getting on my nerves), The Kirghiz Light strikes a fine balance. There are unusually many bright and optimistic moments, it's definitely ambient rather than dark ambient. The percussive elements are mostly subdued and not in your face (as in the excellent Frostling Merge), which I like. Clear win for Rapoon.
    By the way, I don't really like the term "ethnic" as I have no ideal what ethnicity I'm referring to here, but I find it hard to come up with a better term. "Tribal" I find weird, since it seems to imply that peoples that are organised in tribes typically play the percussion.

      Thanks, brother. Guess Rapoon is trying to show his stuff here, bringing it on at the end. Good to make an honest stab at it, even if Zoviet France has a deeper catalogue.

      You have a hard time using "ethnic" but we always use not quite appropriate words in genre descriptions, but it is how we try to use our limited terminology to carry the concept we are trying to convey to others. Words are always so limiting.

      I'm having a hard time with this whole play-off concept I dreamt up. I wanted to share a good depth of both groups & juxtapose their various sounds & ideas, but I think we can never compare one band to another in an album to album way. The entire body of work speaks more to their overall abilities (& our personal bias & musical tastes always shade our listening). I still think it was an okay way to share many varying releases from both, so that part was all right.

    This is the album I'd use to introduce people to Zoviet France. It is a little more mellow and subdued, yet showcases everything they do well and is a strong listen start to finish. It may not be their best, however it is a welcomed addition to any collection.

    I was afraid the 2CD format would be too much Rapoon for one sitting. It wasn't. This is a good lengthy album with several highlights on each disc. The tracks with rhythm are a bit repetitive, as is his style, some work better than others especially as disc 2 progresses. I feel his works often go on a little too long with not enough variance. The loops he creates are very cool, I just don't want to hear it for 10+ minutes.

    I really want to show Robin some more love as I listen to his solo works far more often than ZF, but this isn't the album for it. ZF gets my vote again this round.

    Also agree with FlaccusMUC, ethnic is an odd term, while not inherently xenophobic it just doesn't sit well with me either as a term for music. Tribal makes me think of that short-lived trance music style from the 90s. World music is too generic of a term too. I suppose rhythmic acoustic percussion loops is what I'll call it, though that too is a mouthful, though I do recognize ethno-ambient is the generally accepted term for this style.

      Im suprised, Nate, that you have a hard time presenting these match-ups for comparison. I think that especially the last matches have been very fitting.

      It's just that although I dreamt up these March Madness duels, I'm not super jazzed with pitting one group against another. I'm going to see the project through but don't think I'll do this again. Every band should be judged on their own merit, not pitted against another. The whole Beatles/Stone thing seems counter-productive. I know all discerning music folk that visit this dump decide on the actual musicality of each offering, I just feel ambivalent about clashing two projects. But the real goal was to share a bunch of Zoviet France & Rapoon, so on that level: mission accomplished.
