Trying to Be More Lucid - Getting Lost in the Music

Knowing that I'm a sucker for unique sexy female vocalists, my friend Matt turned me on to Ambar Lucid's Garden of Lucid when it came out in 2020. I was instantly hooked on her folk-tinged, trippy psych-rock, bilingual indie pop R&B style. I started collecting all the disparate tracks she released. I realized a while back that I had quite a few. Decided I needed to share them but never got around to it until now.

Ambar is the daughter of a Dominican mother & Mexican father. She grew up in the quiet suburbia of Little Ferry, NJ, day-dreaming of the bright future as children of a happy family are wont to do..

That all changed after watching her dad get deported to Mexico when she was just a young girl. The traumatic experience cast a shadow over her childhood. That led to her discovery & escape into the world of music. She realized even at that young age that she wanted to make music professionally someday.

& so she did...

Before Garden of Lucid, Ambar released a soft-psych R&B offering for her debut, Dreaming Lucid, which skewed more toward singer-songwriter introspection than pop.

Fazal Paying His Dues

In June I shared some Fazal Prendergast.
Let me tell you a bit about his untimely passing & share some of his early collaborations.

On April 1, 2005 Fazal Prendergast, a well-loved Jamaican-born guitarist who toured & recorded with many reggae legends drowned after his car veered off Highway 101 & plunged into the Eel River. Prendergast was driving alone on his way to a gig in Arcata,CA with reggae singer Don Carlos. The previous night, Prendergast had played at a reggae bash at SoMa Arts in San Francisco with Carlos & dance-hall singer Sister I-Live. The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. in Piercy at the Humboldt County line. It is unclear what caused his 1991 Mercedes Benz to swerve off the road before a bridge & fall 150 feet into the river. The car immediately sank. Prendergast managed to surface with his prized Fender Stratocaster. He struggled to swim to shore. Bystanders rushed to the banks of the river (one person even went into the icy water in a rescue attempt). But the current swept Prendergast downstream, eventually pulling him & his guitar under. Prendergast's guitar resurfaced. His body was found two hours later a quarter-mile downstream.

Prendergast's career began in 1974 when he worked as a session musician with composer Augustus Pablo & his Rockers International record label in Kingston.

The Coalition

Next, from New Jersey, is Rye Coalition.

Merel were near legendary in the New Jersey area in the early 90s. I've shared them before here. The band was: Jose Juan Ruiz - vocal; Jon Ariz & Mike Solski - guitars; the Leto brothers David - bass; & Gregg - drums.

After the demise of Merel, David & Gregg would both soon wind up in Rye Coalition.

Rye Coalition began from the desire Jersey City high school friends Jon Gonnelli - guitar & Ralph Cuseglio - vocals had to form a band. They found their drummer in David Leto (ex-Merel) & Leto's childhood friend, Justin Angelo Morey - bass.

Their first full-length Hee Saw Duh Kaet found Leto once again teamed up with Merel/Gern cohort Alap Momin. The album was released by Gern Blandsten Records.

At this point Dave Leto moved to bass & recruited his brother, Gregg (also ex-Merel) to take over the drums. The new lineup began work on their next album, entitled The Lipstick Game. Two years in the making, the album was again engineered by Alap Momin. It contains some of Rye Coalition's most powerfully experimental songwriting.

Just Got Back from a Very Cool Road Trip

An old friend of mine reached out to me from out of the blue last week. We were tight back in the EAT POOP! San Jose 80s-90s but had kinda lost touch after I relocated to Sacramento. Now that I'm living in Penns Woods I figured we'd never really get together.

Turns out he's now living in East Orange, New Jersey. That's about 400 miles from my new abode. I just got back from a few day visit with him. It was extremely kool. Traveling to New Jersey stirred up a lot of old good memories. I decided to showcaes a few of the bands from the New York City / New Jersey area that I listened to a great deal back in the 90s with said old friend.

Decided to start with Born Against.

Side-story: I mentioned Born Against's Nine Patrioric Hymns for Children in a comment over at my friend Jonder's blog. It turned out that neither he nor his cohort Stinky were all that familiar with Born Against. Jonder is a fount of musical knowledge & is someone I usually turn to for obscure musicalia. If he wasn't that familiar with Born Against, then I guess there are many others out in the blogshere that are not, as well. Sam McPheeters & Born Against were deeply influencial to my EAT POOP! days mindset. I have decided to start with them. It just so happens that one of the pivotal shows in their early career was at WFMU Studios which is located in, you guessed it, East Orange, New Jersey.

In every social movement there is always a contrarian within the counterculture; a dissident amongst the naysayers & a critical rebel inside the rebellion. Born Against played this role to the hilt during the early '90s hardcore scene, leaving behind a trail of righteous indignation, visceral protest, & bruised egos. It certainly helped matters that their music was on par with anything the originators of this genre ever produced, simultaneously echoing while updating the sonic fury of their forebears. Their artfully constructed, acerbic visual missives, in the guise of show flyers went against the grain in a supposedly non-conformist subculture. Some of these flyers drew the ire of people within the scene, based solely on the images & accompanying text, so much so that one needn't have heard a single note from the band in order to be in favor or against the band.

Born Against was an American hardcore punk band from New York City, active between 1989–1993. In addition to their radical leftist politics, the group espoused a do-it-yourself message while contantly challenging the in-fighting they perceived as problematic within the underground hardcore punk community of their time.

The group was founded in early 1989 by guitarist Adam Nathanson & bassist Neil Burke (both formerly of the New York hardcore band Life's Blood) along with vocalist Sam McPheeters & drummer John Guzman, who was replaced in early rehearsals by a drummer named George. George's tenure was also brief. He was replaced after a single show by drummer Nigel Schreiber in July 1989. This lineup recorded a demo cassette as well as a track for the Murderers Among Us 7" compilation released on McPheeters' Vermiform Records label before Burke & Schreiber departed. The band would continue to be plagued by rhythm section fluctuation throughout its career.

Six months later, the band re-emerged with bassist Javier Villegas & drummer Darryl Kahan, the latter from the popular New York hardcore band Citizen's Arrest. This incarnation of the band released the Eulogy single (whose anti-religious title track was controversially dedicated to Steve Reddy of Equal Vision Records upon his conversion to a Hare Krishna lifestyle), & a self-titled 7" EP, along with several compilation tracks.

Late in 1990, Kahan was replaced by drummer John Hiltz, ushering in the longest lasting incarnation of the band. The group toured extensively. They released a debut LP, 1991s Nine Patriotic Hymns for Children, on Vermiform. Bassist Javier Villegas left the group in late 1991 & was replaced by Bret Blue.

With Hiltz & Blue on board, Born Against continued its extensive touring, including a trip to Europe. By this point, the band's political message, sometimes seen as overly aggressive & critique of their contemporaries had sparked much controversy within the hardcore scene. They began work on a new record, which was stalled in July 1992 when Hiltz left the group. The final sessions that produced the resultant 10" record, Battle Hymns of the Race War, featured Melissa York (later in Team Dresch) on drums, although York never performed live with the group.

By early 1993, Nathanson & McPheeters had relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey. There they begun a new version of the band with bassist Tonie Joy & drummer Brooks Headley (of Universal Order of Armageddon). Born Against's radical leftist stance became increasingly drenched in cynicism, which slowly threatened to overtake their message. The group played its final show in July 1993.

After the group's demise, members would continue to collaborate in future bands. Men's Recovery Project, McPheeters & Burke's absurdist noise rock outfit, featured occasional guest appearances by Headley, Joy, & Nathanson. Young Pioneers, Nathanson's proto-folk punk band, also saw membership from Headley & Burke. Joy's group The Great Unraveling contained Headley in its final incarnation. McPheeters & Headley reunited in the Wrangler Brutes.

==============================================================

I'll start with the November 11, 1990 WFMU sessions. The first nine tracks were aired on WFMU. The rest of the tracks were recorded at WFMU Studios May 16, 1991. All tracks were recorded live on Pat Duncan's show for WFMU. This is not released on any label.

That’s the Spirit...

"If I had one wish, I'd bring my dear friend Jimi back. We'd reminisce about days gone by. Tears of joy we would not cry & one good thing about it is...
we'd start all over again."

from 'Jimi's Back" by Randy Wolfe

Did you ever wonder what would have happened if after Jimmy James & the Blue Flames, Randy (from California) had gone along with Jimi to England? Well, I have. The Hendrix - California Experience (Jimi Hendrix, Randy California, Noel Redding, & Mitch Mitchell).

So Randy didn't write tunes as great as Jimi (well, we all know the "Taurus" / “Stairway” thing, right?), but "boy, could he play guitar". The thirteen plus minute "All Along the Watchtower" brings tears to my eyes every time. Or the seven-plus "Red House". Come on. But most of all, he would have always been there for Jimi. We know he would have given his own life to save Jimi from the rip-tide of notoriety & drugs that pulled him down just as he did in the rip-tide of the Pacific to save his son.

Enough of that, though. Spirit was an equally legendary band. When I first saw them at the Fox Theater in San Jose I was hooked. Then Sardonicus came out. ..hell, yeah...

Here are a couple live sets & one post-Randy double discs of greatness...

NEW SERIES!!! The Naterock Album Dump Part 1

Back in December 2021 I launched a series called Naterock Samplers
that touched on musick that personally steered my growth
for the years 1965 - 1987.

This new Album Dump series will span the next year.

Once each month (with the exception of Dub September & Whatever February) I will give a link & decryption code to the source material for December 2021 Naterock Sampler seven-part series (three sections contain two parts each for a total of 10 dumps) .

If you like the artists in any particular years, keep posted, for surely your time will come.

A .zip file marked simply Albums List will be included in each dump, so you can decide from that what you want or simply reference the list below (& with each posting).

Starting out with 1965 - 1967, this was the music that influenced me during these times & spaces.

Tranquility Bass - Cantamilla (from California Dreaming Sampler 12")

These early 90s sounds are some of the finest encapsulations of a music scene where thousands of contrary yet interconnected ideas straight out of the minds & off the pages of Mondo 2000, science / fiction authors Robert Anton Wilson, Timothy Leary, cybernetic systems analysts, techno-utopians, or hardcore ecologists were surge-blended into an amalgam of the times.

Since his death in May 2015, Michael Kandel has been heralded for his work in the early American rave scene & as the unheralded founding father of Trip-hop.

However, that's not what I get when I touch down at Tranquility Bass. Nothing of the Exist Dance tracks hinted at what I'm getting. In 1994 Chasteen moved to Tuscon, Arizona where his Skull Valley project was born. Kandel joined up withTyler Vlaovich to record an album on Lopez Island, Washington. In 1997 the album was released as Let the Freak Flag Fly on Astralwerks Records.

My freak flag for music flies free as any of you muthas out here, but this really did me righteous. To this day, every time I listen to this beloved disc, it checks all the boxes for me, musically, yet I have no idea why. It's a beautiful mystery, this recording. There's a sappy cover of a Jimmie Rodgers 1927 World War I ballad & a serious-as-a-fart-attack Western prairie anthem about fungus & yet I love every second of it. It's been described as "a grand journey through nearly a century of recorded music, a densely layered montage of electronic manipulations & live instruments".

Performed by the Insatiably Eclectic Hippy Freeform Freakout Band.
