More what I'd call a ménage à trois than a true VA. This one was a 2019 UK Record Store Day release. It is a compilation of ska tracks recorded for Max's Kansas City Records with many never having been previously released. This one features Terrorists who I've shared here, The Offs, who I've shared here & here. Also, on this one Terrorist back up the incredible Roland Alphonso on five tracks.
Side 1 -
Tear Up - Roland Alphonso
Pressure & Slide - Terrorists
Riis Park - Terrorists
Musical Resurrection - Roland Alphonso
Justice - Terrorists
You Fascinate Me - The Offs
Four Corners - Roland Alphonso
Side 2 -
Working in a Coalmine - Terrorists
Treat Her Right - Terrorists
Sax Skandal - Roland Alphonso
My World - The Offs
Fade Away - Terrorists

Nicely mate. As usual you manage to put me onto a genre that i'm not already sold on, thanks to some fascinating background info. I'm a huge fan of the 1st wave of ska from the 60s but never found a way into the 80s revival. This though looks very appealing. I maintain that ska is some of the most uplifting music known to man: it must be to do with it rising from the offbeat. I'm no dancing fool - i've got 2 left feet - but whenever i play ska (i have a few treasured Trojan boxed set releases) i seem to find myself jigging around the house.
ReplyDeleteI never truly followed ska as I was always a Dubhed, but had this one in Various. Always liked the Terrorists & liked the ska influences that The Offs brought to punk, so these are all right.
Deletenever found a way into the 80s revival. You are hurting me there. The Britpunk DIY-ska of The Specials was great, a lot of others too, Most of the later ones are fun-ska let's-have-a-party-ska and non-pretentiouska. But doesn't that go for so much (music)genres?
ReplyDeleteWhat is uplifting about any kind of music is the joy, the fun, creativity, wit and blatant enthousiasm put in by Doowop bands, Congolese rhumba, Surinam Kaseko. Even Klezmer
You'll get no argument from me on any of what you wrote, anonymous. My tastes are catholic in the extreme (right now i'm listening to Richard Skelton; earlier it was The Mars Volta: who knows where i'll go next?) but that doesn't mean i have to like everything, right? I can't find much space in my life for jazz fusion either. That doesn't make me, or you, wrong. We're all individuals, we all exhibit preferences. That's what fuels passion, i believe: discernment.

ReplyDeleteThanks for this! Roland Alphonso is an OG of ska. The Offs were more than a ska band, and the music of The Terrorists isn't easy to find these days!
