Working for the Yankee Dollar

You Should not Pay More than £3.99 for These Album

Scottish punk legends Skids signed to Virgin in 1978. That year 16 year old frontman Richard Jobson & bandmate Stuart Adamson penned "The Saints are Coming" which reached #48 in November that year. In all, the Skids had 10 UK chart singles & four albums. The first three albums featured guitarist Stuart Adamson who subsequently formed Big Country.

At the time, Richard Branson's Virgin label were busy accruing an eclectic roster of post-punk hopefuls. In this feeding frenzy, Skids were hooked to what was to prove an optimistic eight-album deal.

John Peel was a big supporter of the band. He saw them play live on several occassions & was hooked. Between 1978 & 1980 they performed five times for his show.

The track "TV Stars" recorded for the group's debut session name checks Peel. According to singer Richard Jobson, it was made up on the spot during the session itself. A live version of this was released as the b-side to the group's fourth single, "Into The Valley".

From a Scream to a Whisper

I was never what we say "into" Sinéad O'Connor, but I listened to her throughout her career. I liked her earlier releases best, really appreciating her feminist stance. When Throw Down Your Arms came out I grabbed a copy of the 2xCD with the bonus Dub disc (but of course).

I alway respected her musical abilities & the breadth of her catalogue. She worked with many other great musicians throughout her life. I just wanted to take this oppurtunity to say that I will miss her.

Off the Wall

Here's an early release from Rough Trade (#6) issued in 1979 from Eric Debris of Metal Urbain that features low-tech synth/noise covers of punk classics. The methodology seems to be recording covers of late 60s/ early 70s rock 'n' roll & avant-garage classics to which Debris added guitar overdriven to ridiculously trebly lengths, then singing a bit like Ian Curtis in a clunky French accent through a pitifully cheap reverb unit while letting a rudimentary drum machine handle the beats.

How can you go wrong with that combination?

Which House?

Does anyone remember Witch house music?

Witch house is a microgenre of electronic music whose central tenet was dark occult themes. It's heyday was the late 00s /early 10s. The style was influenced by chopped hip hop, industrial music, ethereal wave, & dream pop. Witch house usually features synths & drum machines combined with obscure samples, droning repetition, & heavily altered manipulated vocals.

I used to listen to bands like oOoOO, White Ring, LAKE R▲DIO, Mater Suspiria Vision, Gr†LLGR†LL...

Bands like GuMMy†Be▲R!, Gr†LLGR†LL, Bl▲ck † Ceiling, LAKE R▲DIO used various typographic elements including triangles, crosses, & other Unicode symbols. I appreciated the concept of attempting to keeping the scene underground, making it harder to search for on Google, etc.

Witch house imagery tended toward horror films such as The Blair Witch Project or the television series Twin Peaks.

In a related post about Vaporwave (another microgenre of electronic music closely aligned with Witch house that emerged in the early 2010s using an appropriation of 80s / 90s mood music styles such as smooth jazz, elevator music, R&B, & lounge music) I shared the band blacclodge which is also inspired by Twin Peaks.

Bill Nelson is one of my favorite musicians. I have a randomly recurring series called Playing the Bills where I feature music by Bills Burroughs, Laswell, & Nelson.

When Playing the Bills in January 2021, I shared Be Bop Deluxe - Live at the Riviera Theater from Chicago 1976.

At that time, I sez:
"I have never really posted up Be Bop Deluxe but someday plan to get around to their five disc collection Futurist Manifesto - The Harvest Years 1974-1978."

That time is now...

What is Truth?

These platters were released between 1986-90. The first two are numbered limited-edition volumes, each unit featuring individually hand-crafted cover art. They feature artists like: Eugene Chadbourne; Legendary Pink Dots; Haters; German Shepherds; Phil Minton & Roger Turner; Hunting Lodge; & many others. They were released by Panic Records & Tapes, Chicago, which existed from 1984-1991.

PANIC RECORDS & TAPES was an outgrowth of broadcasting & associated musical activities at WZRD-FM 88.3, Chicago (the Wizard), during the heyday of DIY cassette culture, encouraged by the 'zines & other radio stations that catered to like music. Panic Records & Tapes released about twenty cassettes, this three LP compilation (four discs in total), three editions of a 'zine, & perhaps a dozen live shows.

This compilation LP series is entitled WHAT IS TRUTH? after the first LP track from Eugene Chadbourne. The first two LPs were packaged in 1,500 junk sleeves picked from a dumpster behind a record store that feature individually hand-crafted & numbered artwork (painting & collage) done over the original cover. The third 2xLP featured custom hand-crafted marbled paper.

Beyond the Barf Market

Continuing on with our deep dive into Glasgow noise that has been going on for many months, this time I'm featuring some more great music from Dawson, my personal favorite of the lot. Dawson's sound is Scot post-punk: scratchy guitar licks; funky bass lines; & tight paced drums.

As I sez back in February 2008:
''Before you had Lung Leg, Dick Johnson, or Pink Kross, there was the amazing Dawson. Glasgow's premier noise wavers are often forgotten in conversations about the Ex, Gang of Four, or the Pop Group…but their debut album in 1991 stands up to the rest.''

That was the introduction to Barf Market: You’re Ontae Plums.

Later when I was visiting all the countries of the world for the Musick Around the World project (introduced February 28, 2013 - premiered March 1, 2013 - ended back at the ole USA November 14, 3013), March 20th found me in Scotland sharing Dawson's second release How to Follow so that Others Will Willingly Lead (Oh my Godley & CreamCheese).

Today we'll go back to a pre-album-debut 7'' from 1989.

RPM - ABC - Where’s Karen?

Now that leftovers are cleared away, let's get down to the ABC's of July.

I shared Drowning Pool here some time back. Their debut self-titled album & some tracks from Satori were produced by one R. P. McMurphy.

That happened to be the alias of one Chris Maneke who played an even bigger role in the band Abecedarians. They were a Los Angeles based trio active in the mid to late 80s featuring: Chris Manecke - guitar, vocals, keyboards; John Blake - bass: & Kevin Dolan - drums.

They played  reverb heavy, synth driven post-punk.

They have the distinction of being the only American band to have recorded under the legendary Factory Records label, the company that produced records for such artists as Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays, & Orchestral Maneuverers in the Dark.

23 Leftovers: The Final Serving - - - 23 Skidoo part 3

Shortly after Urban Gamelan was released, Fritz Catlin took a sabbatical from the group while the Turnbulls devoted their energies to their chosen martial arts. For much of the next decade, 23 Skidoo activity was displaced by remix & production work under various guises, including Assassins with Soul & 23 Skidoo.

In 1990 The Turnbulls also founded their own label, Ronin, releasing a raft of British hip-hop & breakbeat sides by Paradox, F.O.R.C.E., Skitz, & Deckwrecka.

In 1996, 23 Skidoo signed to record a new album for Virgin, although it would be four years before the tapes were delivered, this delay due to the illness & death of the Turnbull brothers' mother Kim. The album, simply titled 23 Skidoo, was released in August 2000, the first new Skidoo album in sixteen years.
