 Babylon

After referencing the film Babylon numerous times during this month, I decided it was the least I could do but share the soundtrack. This is the expanded version of the 1980 Chrysalis release with two bonus tracks from the Dennis Bovell original score.

Brinsley Forde of Aswad sez:
"What elevates Babylon is the incidental music scored by UK Dub master Dennis Bovell, leader of Matumbi and LKJ's Dub Band, and previously a Sound System operator himself. Although plentiful, it seldom grabs attention but still provides an irresistible reggae soundbed, helping to reposition the grubby, hostile South London streets as Blue's own."

Franco Rosso's incendiary Babylon was proposed to the BBC around 1979. They rejected it claiming it was too controversial because of its accurate depiction of police brutality, racism, & poverty. It had its world premiere at Cannes in 1980 but went unreleased in the U.S. until 2019 for "being too controversial, deemed too likely to incite racial tension" (Vivien Goldman, Time Out). Raw & smoldering, it follows a young dancehall DJ (Brinsley Forde, frontman of landmark British reggae group Aswad) in South London as he pursues his musical ambitions, battling fiercely against the racism & xenophobia of employers, neighbors, police, & the National Front. Written by Martin Stellman (Quadrophenia), shot by two-time Oscar winner Chris Menges (The Killing Fields) with beautifully smoky cinematography that has been compared to Taxi Driver, Babylon is fearless & unsentimental, yet tempered by the hazy bliss of the dancehall set to a blistering UK Dub reggae / Lovers rock soundtrack featuring Aswad, Johnny Clarke, Dennis Bovell, & more.

Various - Babylon (The Original Soundtrack), Chrysalis , 1980 + bonus original score tracks.

Valve --- The Return of a Champion

Back in 2001, fed up with playing sets on mediocre Sound Systems, Dillinja & Lemon D hand-built their own Valve Sound System.

Named after the valve components used in old skool power amps which are said the give the music a 'warmer' sound, the Valve Sound System was designed from the ground up to showcase the full frequency range of the drum & bass spectrum, enabling ravers to be truly immersed in sound. Clocking in at a staggering 96k the Valve System is officially the worlds loudest D&B Sound System.

The system made a few infamous appearances back in the day, all of which are set in the memories of those that got to feel the trouser shaking power of a D&B bass line through the custom built subs… Ultimately, the Valve Sound System required three 7.5 ton lorries to transport it around plus a massive crew to set it up, so the system went quiet for a some years… Until now!

On August 8, Valve Sound System played the Boomtown Fair street party. Festivities kicked off at 2pm with Aum, then co-founder of Valve Sound, none other than Lemon D with 2Shy MC came on at 4pm, then the originator Dillinja with GQ hit it at 6pm. At 9pm Kara took the boards for the final hour. Here's what that sounded like...

UK Sound Systems Today

Nearing the end of this project & still much to cover, this post will be quite a hodge-podge of musical shares. I've tried to move this labor of love along through time up to the present day. UK Dub today is as heart-felt as ever. Sound Systems still hold a place blessed by many. There are artists, producers, selectors, & crews out there making the pure Sounds everyday. Here is a handful of divergent Sound Systems working hard to carry forth the gauntlet of Sound culture in the UK.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bristol is the source of Massive Attack's granulated electronica & was ground zero for trip-hop, jungle & DnB throughout the 90s, but the city would be an entirely different entity if not for Sound System culture. One of the many crews continuing Bristol's pioneering legacy today is Maasai Warrior, the seven-piece self-proclaimed 'Thunder Weight Sound' born in the St. Paul's area in 2010. Led by Ben Maasai & made up of Sound clash veterans, MCs, & selectors loaded with one-of-a-kind Dubplates, Maasai are a longstanding source of pride for West Country Sound Warriors.

Sound System culture can sometimes be a purist pursuit, following a strict rulebook penned from the System Elders of the past. Occasionally, though, someone comes along & disrupts the order. You'll find that in Kai Dub's experimental productions as Dub Forward. Formerly a member of Maasai, as a solo producer Kai Dub crafts his niche from the Casio rhythms of DigiDub & dark, brooding basslines drenched in space echo. As resident producer & owner of the Dub Forward label Kai can usually be found behind walls of equalizers, compressors, & turntables, fuelling the dance on various Systems in his native city of Bristol.

Here's an EP from Kai Dub on the Lion's Den label, teaming up with some of the Lion's Den Sound System crew & some bonus tracks from his own Dub Forward label.

Undoubtedly one of the best sound systems the UK has to offer, Sinai Sound System out of Sheffield have been regulars at Outlook over the years. In 2019 they brought their custom built Sound & a stack of killer Dubs. Producing predominately on 80s & 90s hardware, inspired by all the greats from the 1970s Roots & Dub to present day Steppers style, their Sound System presents UK influenced Roots reggae music in the traditional style with Cheff at the controls.

Next we'll uncover Undercover Cockney. One of the newest Sounds I'm sharing today, Undercover Cockney are Nick Philpin & Paul Emile from London. They both have eclectic backgrounds as touring musicians, producers , Deejays, & general musical malarkey. Drawing inspiration from London's melting pot of Sounds, setting out to create a musical experience that seamlessly merges Dub, traditional reggae, & rocksteady with both classic & contemporary influences. The result is a fusion of genres that transcends boundaries. The duo flawlessly incorporate electronic & rock'n'roll elements into their Dub & reggae foundation.

Underground Cockney do live sets across the UK & have their own radio Clash.

Here's a mixtape of one of their live sets from earlier this year…

Their only release to date is this single from a soon to be released album Double Double. The single features vocalist Coco Malone with Horsemouth toastin' & percussin'.

Last up is Bokeh Versions Sound System.  Their sound is the most cutting edge of all the Sounds I've shared today.

Bristol's electronic music scene is an invigorating one, with labels, promoters, DJs, & producers springing from the city's Dub reggae roots. In recent years, label crews like Timedance & Livity Sound have adapted Dub, dubstep & other sub-bass-focused genres into new styles of UK techno.

Others like Bokeh have come at the city's heritage from a different angle. Over the last few years, Bokeh Versions has drawn from myriad influences connected to Bristol's DIY Sound System culture & an international roster of Dub, dancehall, reggae, industrial, & noise artists.

Here's an extensive mix from BKV Industrial & Robin Stewart featuring nearly all the artists associated with Bokeh & the Bokeh philosophy. The styles are widely varied but it is easy to follow the thread they have in common, a fine thread of richest silken Dub. Nearly two hours worth of top-notch tunes...

Young Warrior

Since I claimed Jah Shaka, Dub Warrior, as the father of modern UK Sound System culture, I would be remiss to overlook his son & heir, Young Warrior

Young Warrior is known far & wide as the Prince of Dub Sound Systems. He is one of the cornerstones of the next generation UK Dub reggae. Young Warrior has worked as a producer for many years now working with the likes of Jah Shaka, Gussie P,  Mafia & Fluxy, Ras Muffet, many more. His productions have been played by Sound Systems across the UK. In 2011 after many years of demand Young Warrior built & launched his very own Sound System at Dubwise Festival 2011 alongside King Alpha Sound System at the Brixton Mass music venue in London.

Since launching his Sound System he has played alongside many big well known Sounds such as Iration Steppas, Jah Tubby's, Jah Youth, Channel One, King Shiloh & many more. One of his Sound System finests moments was launching Birmingham's biggest premier Dub Sound System event, OneDub at the Rainbow Warehouse.

The Young Warrior's sets combines the very new with old skool Sound playing Dub, Roots & culture from the 70s to the very present in the traditional Shaka Warrior-style, connecting with the Elders who attend Shaka dances as well as with the young, the new generation so all can feel his personal, uplifting musical message, always fighting for human rights against racism.

Young Warrior's Sound System was stolen in 2021. The independent musician & Sound System engineer's van & sound equipment was stolen from outside his home in the Catford area just before 2pm on Monday March 8. A GoFundme has raised £15,380 toward the £20k the System cost. If you feel like helping out, go here.

After the theft, Young Warrior sez:
"Just as we were about to enter a road of recovery out of (COVID) lockdown for live events to restart I cannot believe that this has happened."

Here's a 7" single he dropped on Jah Shaka Music about the same time...

Young Warrior is currently working hard rebuilding ihis Sound System while recording other artists, running Jah Shaka Records, & deejaying with Trinity Music & Unit 137 Sound. Young Warrior has formed some amazing working relationships with many huge international organisations & cross genre artists in order to keep Dub Reggae Music seen & heard in the mainstream. He has collaborated with organisations such as MTV, Sound System Outernational, Sonic Street Technologies, Goldsmiths University, Lewisham Council, London Southbank, The British Arts Council, World Mental Health Day, University of the West Indies & V&A Museums.

Young Warrior has without doubt earned his title as the Prince Of Dub Sound System!

His latest album, 312, is the result of encounters on the road & Sounds inspired by his tours.

Reggae Roast Sound System & Adam Prescott

Reggae Roast Sound System was started in 2008 by James Harper in Roundhouse, London. It had been a dream of his since he first heard Jah Shaka Sound. The Reggae Roast Sound System is a truly unique boundary pushing Sound System. Through the use of cutting edge components & design, it uses principles more often associated with high-end Hi-Fi. The system has the ability to reproduce audio signal of the highest resolve level while maintaining musicality with fast, clean impulse response. This allows for high efficiency across all speakers with very low distortion.

Unit 137

Unit 137 is a Sound System, recording studio, & record label. They are a Dub & reggae institution that got their start in South East London (Hither Green, Lewisham) around 2012.

137 DJ, producer, soundman, & engineer Hylu sez:
"Appreciating diversity has helped us give space for each artist in the collective to bring their own style to the mix. The dance is where that positivity comes together."

Diversification is a natural evolution of music. Unit 137 understand that there are different reasons why Dub, reggae, roots, dancehall, & jungle are important to each individual in the crew, the artists they collaborate with as well as for their audience. The reasons may be spiritual, political, religious, cultural, social, emotional, &/or physical. Unit 137 tries to be all-inclusive, unifying with music, pushing creativity, while remaining respectful & knowledgeable about the culture's roots. At the same time, they draw inspiration from the rich musical history of Sound System culture.

Let's start off with a mix made for the United Nations of Dub Weekender London Launch Party held at the Bussey Building Saturday March 8, 2014. Trinity Music meets up with Dubwise to promote Sound System culture with over 24 Systems rockin' the foundations. The mix is courtesy of Young Warrior, Hylu, & Sleepy Time Ghost recorded at Unit 137. Near the end the crew explain the State of Sound System culture in the UK & their plan for a growing future.

2022 marked the tenth anniversary of Unit 137 Sound System & record label. To celebrate the anniversary three of the founding producers, Ed West, Hylu, & Sleepy Time Ghost, created a three track EP, The 10 Years EP.

The EP starts with a heavy dancehall inspired track from Ed West titled "Daddy, What Are Dreams For?" that fires off surreal sci-fi-esque samples & heavy synth lines between driving kicks & bass. Hylu steps in for the second track with a percussive led, dark, dance floor roller. "BUr5elf!" featuring samples of vocalist / Unit 137 crew member, Deemas J recorded at Lewisham Sound System Trail in May 2022 alongside djembe rifts & synth melodies. Sleepy Time Ghost closes the EP with a rolling Steppas tune "Decade Riddim" with a warm bass-line that washes through the track, transporting the listener between catchy melodies, percussion, & vocal samples. I've added a bonus track, Ghost Writerz remix of Hylu & Jago's "Pressure" recorded live at Don Letts BB6 Music January 17, 2016.

Roots Garden Sound System

This is Sound Systember 24/2.0. The original post was subject to takedown by the sons of bitches at Blogger. They, in their infinite stupidity, declared the post to be SPAM. What shite. There was nothing even vaguely spamish about anything on that post.

This is the second takedown I’ve experienced in the last two months after more than 15 years of blogging without even one. I guess I’ve come under their scrutiny somehow & there is nothing I can do to remedy the situation other than comply with their take-down notices.

I have trimmed down the original post to just the three basic Showcase shares from Roots Garden. Here’s hoping they aren’t the problem & that the Blogger Gestapo done bother with this addendum.

Around 1995, Manasseh Sound System morphed into Roots Garden Sound System to coincide with Roots Garden record label started by Nick Manasseh & Jon Jones.

These are the three Roots Garden special Showcases with some great tunes & versions.

Mungo’s Hi Fi

Mungo's Hi Fi was begun by Glaswegians Doug Paine (Dougie No Pain) & Tom Tattersall (Tommy Danger) in the waning years of the last Century. Both were deejays. Upon discovering the Blood & Fire reissue albums, they turned their attention to Dub & original Roots music. At that time they deejayed as the Dub Dentist, an alliterative nod to Keith Hudson. When they started Mungo's Hi Fi, the only other Sound System around Glasgow was Rampant Sound. Doug & Tom hooked up with them as they had already an extensive Sound System. The duo helped pass out flyers & promote events for Rampant. Through this teamwork, Doug & Tom learned the basics of running a Sound System. By 2000 they had enough equipment to set up their own small Sound. Their first speaker were being thrown away by the University of Glasgow theater department. After some new drivers & some tender loving care, they became the core of Mungo’s Hi Fi. Those lasted for years.

Craig McLeod (Craigy Wonder) joined the crew around 2000. New blood helped keep things fresh, but just as Irration Steppas & the whole new flood of UK Dub creators, there was the need to start with the original Roots reggae heritage, rocksteady, dancehall or whatever, then switch heavily into digital steppers for a bit, jumping from one thing to another so nothing got too stale.

Mungo’s started sharing their Sound System with many other selectors & deejays so that helped expand their pallette as well.
