On any post, if the link is no longer good, leave a comment if you want the music re-uploaded. As long as I still have the file, or the record, cd, or cassette to re-rip, I will gladly accommodate in a timely manner all such requests.

AMA for Sven

I've noticed a marked uptick in interest in Muslimgauze.

I have been an advocate since the late 80s. At that time the fanbase was quite small. After Bryn's untimely death January 1999 there was a bump in interest but that seemed to level off. However, his legacy continues to grow. Since his death, the music of Muslimgauze has continued to be released. Bryn inundated labels & collaborators with massive quantitites of music. Labels, including Soleilmoon & Staalplaat in particular & more recently Aquarellist, continue to publish unreleased albums, as well as releases of demos, Muslimgauze reworked tracks, & previously abandoned full-length tapes. Jones' posthumous discography is known for including many studio variations of nearly all his music.

For those of you who delve into this kinda stuff, here's some music that runs in the vein of Muslimgauze. If you enjoy Bryn, you might want to give these a listen.

Abu AMA lives in West-Germany; talks of his gypsy roots & vague links to Spiral Tribe. He can often be found teaching local refugees English on the weekends. Abu AMA first appeared on the darkwave collective Hexx 9 release Wiitch : Modern Witch Music from Hexx 9 Records. Here's the Abu AMA track (#19)...

After some back & forth emails with Bokeh Versions record label Abu sent Bokeh Edwards almost 500 demos. He simply sez:
"pick some" (remind ya of Muslimgauze???).

Bokeh Versions first choice was Arabxos Ishara. This is Abu AMA's bewildering assortment of Middle Eastern sound motifs, bubbling low-end reflections in Dub, bass, rhythmic patterns, & tribal-infused beauty. Indonesian field recordings & snatches of UK pub talk strung together with rumbling sub-bass sonics that all add to the disorientating lack of place as the hypnotic electronic music swirls through the upper plains of our atmosphere, its pulse dense with smoke or thick fog.

Abu AMA sez this is:
"dedicated to all the refugees worldwide".

Seemingly more comfortable at home base, Arabxo was followed up by a companion piece on Hexx 9. The first 50 came in the beautiful hand-made Shemag bag pictured above. This is a huge step forward imo.

This next one is an accumulation of sounds that represents the breadth & growth of Abu AMA's unique sound, originally released on a limited run of 2x c90 cassettes. Taking heavy inspiration from Muslimgauze's sound legacy & the ruffneck attitude of industrial DIY music, Abu AMA creates a transnational sound world of dystopian, yet ultimately high-spirited music.

  2. Thanks a lot, Nate! Never heard of Abu AMA. I've just put on one of his albums and it sounds like I'm going to have a lot of fun exploring his catalogue.
Also, again many thanks for the Muslimgauze post. Not unlike yourself, I've always had problems with Muslimgauze because of the denunciations of anti-semitism and I'm still not completely convinced that Jones' work is not anti-semitic. And yet, it's been great to listen to the Muslimgauze albums (which I've done almost all the time during the last days). If you have more of those, that would also be very welcome.

    1. Good to know you are interested in checking out further Abu AMA. Was hoping you'd like it.

As for Muslimgauze, I have much. Are there particular ones you are looking for or just in general interest?

    2. Please don't equate anti-zionism with anti-semitism (that's what the zionists want you to do). There's absolutely nothing anti-Jewish – Palestinians are semites too, by the way – about Bryn's work. Bryn was anti-colonial, hence anti-zionist.

    3. Thank you for this concise comment. I have tried to explain this position but never so directly to the point. Being against the aggressive construct of the state of Isreal does not mean you are anti-Jewish or as you more correctly point out, anti-semite (including Palestinians). The idea that world powers could uproot an existing population & give their homeland to another group (disinfranchised & persecuted by the Naxis as they were) is what Bryn stood against & he was exactly correct. Thank you.

    4. As another anonymous, I always feel the urge to comment on difficult matters. Where a music blog puts on velvet socks not be political. But then again why are those socks coloured? I am anti-religion full stop. People, I agree, must keep there religion, beliefs etc, but do it private. Worship at home, unvisible from the streets. I am not anti-semitic, I am anti- abrahamist, or anti-ibrahimist. Fair to say It is not just religion. Anti-Trump, Anti-Xi, Anti-Putin, and Anti- Netanyahu. and a few dozen fascist leaders on top. Yes sometimes I am so full of anti. I anti-cipate, for I don't want to be con-stipated.

  3. Thank you. Talking about "vague links to Spiral Tribe" I would love a deep dive into network23 and a lot of things Spiral Tribe related.

    1. The whole Spiral Tribe / SP23 tale is incredible & a vital part of UK (& Euro) music scene. Will try to remember to throw something worthwhile together in the near future. They came up while I was researching Sound Systember but as the are New Age traveller/pagan/rave oriented, they never made the cut.

Another excellent post. The only Abu Ama album I had was Aghori, so it will be good to hear more.

Re Muslimgauze, do you have any of the following (since you appear to be offering)?

    • Uzi Mahmood
    • Iranair Inflight Magazine
    • Bandit Queen E.P. (the Panasonic remix of Druse is incredible)
    • Occupied Territories

    All the best.
