I was hoping to find an interesting track from each Various Artists release, but some of the comps. just didn't move me for one reason or another, or I already had shared what I found interesting, so I ended up with a less than complete set. A few Frenz of NSS offered up sugesstions or made request, so that help flush things out a bit. Anyhow, I figured I'd start with one that I pulled from the first Various Artists shares from June.
That honor fell on Moodswings from the Fell from the Sun compilation from the Saint Etienne boys. I liked their "Spritual High (The Moodfood megamix)" so I looked for some Moodfood.
Moodswings is the duo composed of Grant Showbiz (best known for his work with The Fall) & JFT Hood (The Pretenders - Billy Bragg). Their biggest hit was the remade single of "Spiritual High (State of Independence) Pt. II," which featured vocals by Chrissie Hynde in their remix of a song originally written by Jon & Vangelis.

Grant Showbiz! A name well known to fans of The Fall. This should be interesting to hear -- thanks!
ReplyDeleteAlthough these two are more connected through Billy Bragg, it's definetly that Fall-ish Showbiz.
DeleteWonderful. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteMost welcome, my friend.

Thank you for taking the time! I was wondering if you could find for me Forward Head - Elevate 1998? Please let me know, thank you so much!
DeleteI only have the 2001 reissue with tracks 9 & 10 different from the original. For the original track 9 is “Feed” & track 10 is “Near”. On this reissue, track 9 is “Near” & track 10 is “One More Hour”. I do not have the track “Feed”. Sorry.

Burnt Black emerged from the murky depths of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1994. In the four years following Burnt Black rose to claim Halifax's best attended performances. They recorded four CDs & toured Eastern Canada.
Spiritual High (parts 1-3) indeed! What a great way to start the day! I've loved that track from trance compilations for years, but didn't know this is the source.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Nø!
Glad to be able to provide the source material for these great tunes. Have a safe 4th.
DeleteThank you for Psychedelicatessen!! Big fan of Moodfood, Donna Sommer's version of State of Independence is interesting, too, although the original by Vangelis & Jon Anderson (on the imho otherwise so-so Friends of Mr. Cairo album) is the classic. All versions have their particular vibe. (Decades ago, Eno used to rate the Donna Sommer version as one of his favourite songs, for what it's worth.)
ReplyDeleteUnsure if I should be That Guy and point out that the Moodfood guys actually didn't have anything to do with writing the original Vangelis version, but there, I just did. ;0) Long live the Maestro, RIP.
Awesome blog, as always!!
Thanks & corrected above.
