Silversun Pickups originated in the Silverlake district of Los Angeles. I had a close friend who lived in Silverlake in the Aughts (& beyond). Whenever I was visiting him & we were out on a liquor run (going to the Silversun liqour store on the corner of Silverlake Blvd & Sunset - hence Silversun), we would often run into members of the band also on a liquor run (hence Silversun Pickups, get it). If we were hitting some local Silverlake Clubs to see Elliott Smith or Beck or Rilo Kiley at the Silver Lake Lounge or the Echo or Spaceland, we would often see the Pickups perform. They never truly made me swoon, but nonetheless, here they are, making you Swoon.

Thanks very much Nate. I 'swooned' to the background too - for a boy from the grimy, rainy north of England stories about LA always have a touch of the exotic to them. I picture scenes reminiscent of 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' - sunny boulevards, convertibles, palms. A long way from food banks, empty factories, betting shops. As we say round these parts, "it's grim oop north."
ReplyDeleteThat's what The KLF sez, fer sure. LA is sunny boulevards, convertibles, palms...on the surface, but under that top layer of sheen is a grimy, greasy underbelly (also good fun). Thanks brother.
DeleteThank you!
