On any post, if the link is no longer good, leave a comment if you want the music re-uploaded. As long as I still have the file, or the record, cd, or cassette to re-rip, I will gladly accommodate in a timely manner all such requests.

Dubtember 10 - The Archives of Gil Scott-Heron

As I mentioned in the introduction to Dubtembe & elsewhere this monthr, these shares were items I first posted on a private blog that specialized in all things Jamaican, so although this is Dubtember, some things this month will not necessarily be strictly Dub. Here is a set of reggae music & its Dub follow-up.

The Archives is a Washington D.C. reggae band formed when Thievery Corporation's Eric Hilton began a quest to explore the roots of reggae music. This 2020 release is the Archives reggae tribute to Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson. Carry Me Home is a highly ambitious collaboration featuring an array of guests (including Puma Ptah, Raheem DeVaughn, Addis Pablo, & Kenyatta Hill) celebrating the works of the late, great poet / musician Gil Scott-Heron & collaborator Brian Jackson. They took the deeply soulful songs of Gil Scott Heron & Brian Jackson, transformed them into authentic soul-stirring roots reggae anthems.

After a start like that, how does a band like The Archives follow such a special tribute album?  Well, typically in the reggae realm you Dub it to the top.  The Archives enlisted the most innovative & progressive Dub engineer today, Laurent "Tippy I" Alfred of i Grade Dub. Now this Dub version is available: Carry Me Home Dub. Tippy's Dub mixes do not reinvent the album, or diminish any of its inherent gravitas. Instead he breathes new life into each track, shining a light on the individual talents of all the players.
