Thought I had all my Sun City Girls (& associated projects) all gathered in one file, but low & behold, when I was digging through this pile of off-casts, here was one by the Girls, needing some work, hiding from sight.

Hope this finds you well, or at least as well as can be expected, given the situation we find ourselves in. Speaking of SCG, Sir Richard Bishop recently released his first solo guitar album in too many years. Reviews have been positive, many saying it focuses on his ‘John Fahey style of playing.’ Perhaps. As you probably know, his first solo album was actually released on Fahey’s Revenant label. At the time many reviewers also made the same Fahey comparison, totally off the mark as far as I could hear. Apparently Rick mentioned this to John, to which John replied ‘You sound nothing like me. You play like the Devil!’ Said Sir Richard, ‘After John said that, we got along just fine.” Anyway, I’d be happy to post a link here in the comment if you’d like. The last time I saw Rick was at a show in Richmond, VA years ago. I suggested, given the south Asian flavor of much of his work, “Ustad” might be a better title than “Sir.” Considering royal’s vileness through history up to the present day [Andy Windsor being the latest example] , who needs or wants an appointment/knighthood by the Queen anyway? He seemed willing to consider the idea. To his credit, I imagine he would rather mock the house of Windsor rather than the validity of serious Indian classical music or the titles it bestows to honor it greatest musicians.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear from you, Rev. Great stories about SCG & SRB. Salvador Kali was indeed on Fahey's label but in my opinion sounds nothing like John. It's SCG Sir Richard style all the way.

Agreed, on the use of ‘Sir.’ I gotta say though, there are times I think playing rises to the level of Ustad. He’s just gotten better and better over the years. I’m going to be on the road the next several days, but if no one beats me to it, I’ll post a link in these comments when I get back. It’ll be in 320/mp3. If someone wants it in FLAC, etc., best to do what I did and send some loot Rick’s way.
