As Tony De Vit says, "Goin' all the way to #1" - The Shamen. Utah Saints almost had it with "I Still Think of You" but the live track killed their chances. Thanks NØ.
ReplyDeleteKinda have to agree with you, Anon. "move Any Mountain" did it for me today as well, even though my favorite track was "I Think of You". I'll update the Board.
DeleteACR's Waterline is a funky slap bass workout that doesn't overstay its welcome. Funaezekea is a welcomed dub excursion that fits well with their alias Sir Horatio, though it kinda feels sloppy towards the end. The Shamen are just not my thing, the Indica remix is about the only track I'd listen to more than once. I'm hoping the one or two singles of theirs that I do like may come up in the future of this matchup. This Utah Saints single is more palatable, by just a little thanks to the CJ Bolland remix. I agree, the live track kills this one. And a hard pass on Dreadzone here, too bland and commercial sounding for me; even Mick Jones can't save this one.
ReplyDeleteACR gets my vote.
Thanks, Mooz for your comment. Have to say I thought the Dreadzone track would be much better, especially with Mr Clash Jones involved but found it lackluster. I have shared a Sir Horatio single here:

I'll update the Board.
I listened to everything today, just confirming my tastes o. This contest so far:
ReplyDeleteShamen and Utah Saints make dance music (not calling this techno, too full and happy). The lyrics are terrible. Not my thing, sorry..
Dreadzone, they are nice... More on m'y alley... But this tune is too full as well, and It lacks a dub that would make It more spacious.
I was pleasantly surprised with the almost instrumental tracks if ACR. Good taste, Funaezekae even a bit jazzy, pleasantly so.
A Certain Ratio, miles ahead !
Thanks, MK. ACR seem to have hit it out of the park for most everyone today. I'll update the Board.
DeleteTwo classic tracks from ACR today. Waterline is just perfect - percussion with a driving funky bassline. Funkaezeka, slower, atmospheric.
ReplyDeleteDreadzone, despite featuring Mick Jones did nothing for me. I was hoping for something special given that I like The Clash so much. Oh well...
The Shamen and Utah Saints - Blah blah, something, something, CJ Bolland remix - OK, that's more like it. But is it the Utah Saints or is it a CJ Bolland track? A quick Google leads me to CJ Bolland's Bandcamp pages - there's some really *nice* stuff to listen to here. I may be a while...
ACR for the win today.
Another vote for ACR on this outing. Thanks, TB.
Delete"Too Late" is a decent rock song, but on a blind listen I would not have guessed that either Mick Jones or Dreadzone were involved. It doesn't seem to play to anyone's strengths. "I Still Think Of You" was also generic, and we've already heard "Highlander". ACR noodled around a bit too much.
ReplyDelete"Move Any Mountain" wins the day. (Bit of a letdown to find out that "LSI" stands for "Love Sex Intelligence".)
Twisted minds dance as one. My favorite set today as well. Will update the Leader Board. Thanks, brother.
