Thug Life

Sorry to all for being such a downer. I'm going to try to forge ahead. Maybe activity will break the lethargy of depression. I'll get back to Musick that Needed Work - Q after this one. It seemed what I wanted to post on returning.

The Thugs are Nicola Giunta - guitar, bass, organ, drum mahine, tape, vocals & Edoardo Guariento - drum. The twelve tracks were recorded almost exclusively with vintage instruments & delve into the roots sound of the mid to late 70s. They have that expansive, profound attitude, that sense of constant invention that characterized the work of Lee Scratch Perry. At the same time the tracks have this psychedelic centrifugal force that is either explicit or more often hidden in the details.

Thugs or Thuggees is the name of a historical brotherhood of religious murderers & muggers. Estimates of the number of their victims vary between 50.000 to over a million. The Brotherhood experienced its heyday in pre-colonial India. It was destroyed by the British colonial power at the beginning of the 19th century. Giunta liked the image of this forbidden sect meeting in subterranean sanctuaries performing mysterious rituals for their goddess Kali (goddess of death). Every track is about the Thuggees activities in one way or another.

Fugue State

To All: I'll be gone for a while, be back as soon I as can.

Yesterday I witnessed the collapse of my future.

Being a person who tries to Be in the Here & Now, it was very disturbing.

My wife & I are both dependent on Social Security & Medicaire for our livelihood & health. What is coming our way does not bode well for either of us.

I will sort this out as soon as I can but right now, this blog has moved from funtime priority to the back burner.

I'm walking around in a disassociative fugue state right now. I'll try to find my way back a.s.a.p.

Thank you all.

Update: To everyone who has commented here, thank you for your overwhelming outpouring of kindness & thoughtfulness. I feel I have let you all down by not plunging forward with some encouragement & unplifting shares. In the wake of events I just can't seem to carry on with business as usual. Your words have really helped so I'm asking for some more help. If you could list the music that is helping you cope, that is lightening your crush of grief, perhaps you would let me know & I'll try to get my shit together enough to share some of your recommendations.

Thank you all again

Musick that Needed Work - Q: Q Lazzarus

May as well continue with this series since Quincy's untimely passing set things off.

I've been hammering out this series since 2015. It used to be called Musick that Needs Work, but recently it changed to Musick that Needed Work. I have actually DONE the work so I thought I might be more positive about completing the project if I acknowledged I was accomplishing something.

Since December last I have finished letters M thru P. Going to knock out Q this month. I was mildly suprised that I had more things in the Q Needs Work folder than in my reqular Q folder. Only three things under Q: Quick Culture; Quicksilver; & some shit by Queen that I had somehow acquired??? The Musick that Needs Work: Q folder contained seven separate artists, half with more than one release. I guess I just dumped Q stuff in the Needs Work & then forgot it.

Let continue Q...

Q. Lazzarus was the nom de musique of Diane Lackey who died in 2022. A former New York City cabbie turned East Village musician, Diane was working one snowy evening & picked up Jonathan Demme as a fare. She was playing some of her own music in the cab. Demme decided to work with Q & used her music in four of his films, most notably Silence of the Lambs

Musick that Needed Work - Q: Quincy Jones.

Musick that Needed Work has been a long running project around NSS. Musick that I stuck in a folder that needed future repair, that I'm trying to finish.  Finally getting to letter Q this month. I had this post ready for a bit later in the month, but with the passing yesterday of the 91 year old musickal legend, I felt it appropriate to post this today.

In a career spanning over seven decades, Quincy Jones has earned his reputation as a renaissance man of American music. Quince is a talented trumpet player, master arranger, & top-notch producer in rhythm & blues, soul, funk, big band, swing, bossa nova, jazz, hip hop, rock 'n' roll, pop, & disco. Although these days he may be best known for his soulful productions with artists such as Michael Jackson at the turn of the 1980s, this was just one peak of his long & varied career.

A gifted trumpet player by his teens, he won a scholarship to Schillinger House in Boston but left soon after when he was offered the job as a trumpet player with Lionel Hampton. It was with Hamp that Jones' skills for arranging came to prominence. Moving to New York, he became an arranger, working with artists such as Dinah Washington & Ray Charles. After touring with Dizzy Gillespie's band, he secured a deal with ABC-Paramount & shortly thereafter began leading his own band.

The two selections I have that needed work are as varied as the man's career. The first is 1975s Mellow Madness. This era of his journey saw Jones moving further towards jazz-funk. Hope you enjoy.

It's a Drive-in Saturday

On August 4, Frenz of NSS monte walters let me know that the links to a 2015 King Black Acid mega-post here were dead. I re-uploaded the material at that time.

I am always glad when anyone lets me know about any dead links they find. Sometimes it's the only way I find out that the music needs re-shared. I don't really have the time nor ability to go back through all the years of posts to check their health.

At the very end of the King Black Acid post, I had shared two bonus tracks: KBA doing a cover of Elton John's "Bennie & the Jets" live at Doug Fir in Portland; & a cover of Bowie's "Always Crashing in the Same Car".

Here's that song on a tribute album to David Bowie with a great selection of other covers...

Late October Chill

This time of year the leaves have turned gold, orange, & red, the frost has started to show, & the Autumn October chill is upon us.

Here's a show from late last October from Radio Balamii, "radio from South London to the World" to help warm you up a bit, some Balearic summer breeze stored up just for you. Or if the sun isn't bright enough, well move inside & enjoy some acid house.

Richard's DJ journey began in 1989, with residencies at the legendary Crazy Club at Busbys in London, and The Astoria in London. In 1997 he began music production & recording. He has released many singles, albums, & compilations under his own name or as Bronx Dogs (1997–2003), Padded Cell (2005–2012), & Hackney Vandal Patrol (2018+).

Sen has played all over the world, including legendary clubs such as Sabresonic, Blood Sugar, & Haywire (Andrew Weatherall's club nights during the 1990s & 2000s),

This set is Richard Sen, playing acid house, downtempo, & balearic with a special mix from Boxheater Jackson. Tracks from Passaran, unreleased Richard Sen, Talaboman & more.

Facility 4 on the Air

I have featured Nina Walsh before involving her relationship as long term creative partner to Andrew Weatherall. The two ran the Sabres of Paradise & Sabrettes record labels. They later released material as Woodleigh Research Facility which I have extensively shared in the past.

The Woodleigh Research material is released on the Facility 4 label, which Nina still runs.

Brother Joseph's Sonic Treasure Show broadcasts out of Glasgow via Radio Magnetic, weaving a mix of cosmic, psyche, ambient, downtempo, & Dub. On New Year's Day 2021 Brother Josep's Sonic Treasures radio show featured two special long form pieces from Nina Walsh's Facility 4. These two pieces were lined up to be played on Weatherall's Music's Not For Everyone but in February 2020 tragedy intervened, took Andrew away, & the monthly radio with him. This set was never aired.

The first piece, C-Pij01 Facility 4 Day, is an hour of wonderful ambient wash, a combination of:
Nina Walsh - flute, synth, vocals, guitar; Marcos Alegria - guitar; Anita Hurst - vocals, harmonium; Franck Alba - viola, ebow guitar; & Chris Cornetto - trumpet. Broadcast at 1:11pm, 01/01/21.

The second part, C-Pij02 Facility 4 Night, is two & a half hours long, introduced by Brother Joseph. It fades into distortion & noise, echoes & bangs before a song starts to take shape, guitar chords. Then back to ambient sound, FX & washes, drones & voices coming through the mist with a wandering trumpet floating on top. After an hour & ten minutes it dissolves once more, Brother Joseph returns, then the guitar/ bass/ drums kick back in, an 80s post-punk bassline with a lovely synth topline. Then there's more, twists & turns, musical sections mixed together, one segueing into another.

Part 2 Night is from the archives of Facility 4 with: Nina Walsh - vocals, guitar, synth, flute; Nadia Musa - vocals; Franck Alba - ebow guitar; Vipri Kettu - violin; Audrey Riley - cello; & Chris Cornetto - trumpet. Broadcast at 11:11 pm, 01/01/21.

AMA for Sven

I've noticed a marked uptick in interest in Muslimgauze.

I have been an advocate since the late 80s. At that time the fanbase was quite small. After Bryn's untimely death January 1999 there was a bump in interest but that seemed to level off. However, his legacy continues to grow. Since his death, the music of Muslimgauze has continued to be released. Bryn inundated labels & collaborators with massive quantitites of music. Labels, including Soleilmoon & Staalplaat in particular & more recently Aquarellist, continue to publish unreleased albums, as well as releases of demos, Muslimgauze reworked tracks, & previously abandoned full-length tapes. Jones' posthumous discography is known for including many studio variations of nearly all his music.

For those of you who delve into this kinda stuff, here's some music that runs in the vein of Muslimgauze. If you enjoy Bryn, you might want to give these a listen.

Abu AMA lives in West-Germany; talks of his gypsy roots & vague links to Spiral Tribe. He can often be found teaching local refugees English on the weekends. Abu AMA first appeared on the darkwave collective Hexx 9 release Wiitch : Modern Witch Music from Hexx 9 Records. Here's the Abu AMA track (#19)...

After some back & forth emails with Bokeh Versions record label Abu sent Bokeh Edwards almost 500 demos. He simply sez:
"pick some" (remind ya of Muslimgauze???).

Bokeh Versions first choice was Arabxos Ishara. This is Abu AMA's bewildering assortment of Middle Eastern sound motifs, bubbling low-end reflections in Dub, bass, rhythmic patterns, & tribal-infused beauty. Indonesian field recordings & snatches of UK pub talk strung together with rumbling sub-bass sonics that all add to the disorientating lack of place as the hypnotic electronic music swirls through the upper plains of our atmosphere, its pulse dense with smoke or thick fog.

Abu AMA sez this is:
"dedicated to all the refugees worldwide".

From the Far End of the Courtyard

Public Memory is the solo project of Robert Toher of the Brooklyn duo ERAAS (along with Austin Stawiarz). ERAAS' sound is more post-punk shoegaze whereas Public Memory is more downtempo trip-hop. You know which side of the fence that puts me.

This first share features gritty atmospherics, damaged synthesizers, & unearthly vocals blended with a mixture of electronic & organic percussion, creating a sense of forceful unease combined with the shadowy production for a unique contrast between power & vulnerability.

Over the past seven years, Public Memory's distinctive use of analog synthesizers, electronic beats mixed with organic percussion, lo-fi sound design, & gritty ambience has created a singularly eerie & shadowy world.

The first seconds of Public Memory's new record, Elegiac Beat, thrust us immediately into that world. There is something terribly askew: bits of brightness here, some shadows piled thick there, some jazz / funk amongst the Dub & Krautrock. The track has a jazzy, trip-hop flavor, albeit filtered through Public Memory's narcotic, hazy lens. Persistent is the feeling of being haunted, or even hunted in some way. Faded distant synthesizers meld with voices, human or otherwise that beckon us as well as warn us. This should appeal to fans of 1990s Bristol trip hop, coldwave, or Thom Yorke's The Eraser.
